OZZY OSBOURNE-BLIZZARD OF OZZ PRESS RELEASE 1980 Heavy metal fans the world over waited with baited breath for news of their hero, Ozzy Osbourne, ever since his departure from Black Sabbath. On September 12, 1980, the long wait ended when Ozzy, with his new band, Blizzard of Ozz, commenced a massive UK tour. Any fears that Ozzy would not be able to equal the success he achieved with Sabbath were allayed with the opening of the tour in Glasgow. The press and fans alike were unanimous in their support of Ozzy. "The perennially popular Ozzy Osbourne is back more with a bang than a whimper. The king is back and this time his crown looks firmly lodged indeed." Dante Bonutto–Record "Not only is Ozzy Osbourne back in business, but he’s better than ever." Steve Brown–Musicians Only. "Sabs-like to be sure, but faster more furious and updated for the discerning 1980 cranium cracker." Geoff Barton-Sounds. Similarly the band’s debut album, Blizzard of Ozz, received rave reviews, going straight into the charts at Number 7. Steve Gett of Melody Maker wrote, "Their debut album is a killer. Oz has planned his latest onslaught with diligence." During the eleven years with Black Sabbath, Ozzy’s reputation as a wild man and hell raiser reached legendary proportions. But after eight studio albums and many world tours, Ozzy and Sabbath parted company when he realized that "we had come to a crossroads in musical direction." He azdmits that getting the right band together was not easy. "The worst thing was auditioning people. I’d never done it before; I mean, how do you tell a bloke he can’t play?" Initailly, Ozzy went to America to look for musicians. ("Britain was still into punk and I thought that I wouldn’t find the right musicians here.") After countless auditions, he got the feeling he was wrong, and then he found guitarist, Randy Rhoads. "I’d given up hope of finding anyone when someone suggested Randy to me. He’s from L.A. and played with a band called Quiet Riot. He was a guitar teacher at a local college when I asked him to join the band." Randy is already being hailed as the newest guitar hero, receiving comments such as, "In guitarist Randy Rhoads, Ozzy has struck gold, and 24-carat at that…He is destined to become a real favorite with audiences." Ozzy returned to London and bumped into ex-Rainbow bassist, Bob Daisley, at a gig. Ironically, when he left Rainbow, after having been with them for eighteen months, Bob had planned to form a band with vocalist Ronnie Die, but for one reasoner another it never happened, and Dio later went on to replace Ozzy in Sabbath. Finding a drummer proved to be the most difficult job. Countless people were heard, some lasted a few days, but nobody was right. Ozzy explains: "I’d reached the point when I was going to give up looking and just use session drummers. Lee was going to be positively the last audition." As it turned out, Lee Kerslake proved to be perfect. Lee, of course, did not have to prove that he was a good drummer, he’d already done that with eight years with Uriah Heep and eleven albums. When he left Heep in ‘79 he formed his own band, Blind Ambition, which is still In existence. Ozzy Osbourne and Blizzard of Ozz now have to prove themselves in America where they will tour in early ‘81. Rage Redux to Play Ozzfest "The Osbournes" announce acts, dates for 2002 Ozzfest All aboard! ADVERTISEMENT The new band featuring former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk will be a main stage performer at this year’s Ozzfest, which launches on July 6th in Bristow, Virginia. Dates and acts for the 2002 Ozzfest were announced today by Ozzy Osbourne, his family (wife/manager Sharon, son Jack and daughter Kelly) and World Wrestling Federation champion Triple H at a press conference held at the WWF restaurant in New York City’s Times Square. The WWF will be the principal sponsor of this year’s Ozzfest, with wrestlers running a signing booth at the tour’s stops, while Ozzfest performers will also make appearances at WWF events. "If you’ve ever been to a WWF show, you know we always over-deliver, and if you’ve ever been to an Ozzfest show, they always over-deliver," Triple H said. "I can guarantee you this, if you’ve been to Ozzfest in the past and thought it was great, just wait until the WWF is a part of it. Because this is a marriage made in hell." As for the music, Osbourne will headline the main stage, following the new Rage ensemble, System of a Down, P.O.D., Drowning Pool, Adema and Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society. Rob Zombie, who toured with Osbourne last fall, will headline the second stage. "Rob wanted to go with a stripped down show — he’s not taking the bells and whistles," Sharon Osbourne said. "It’s all about the music for him on this tour, and I think a lot of people are going to be surprised." Meshuggah, Apex Theory, Lost Prophets, Pulse Ultra, Neurotica, Flaw, Mushroomhead, 3rd Strike, Otep, Seether, Glassjaw, Used, Soil, Ill Nino and Chevelle are among the other acts that will perform on the second and third stages. It wasn’t so much Ozzy, but rather his tele-famous family that tended to be the focus of the conference. "My part of it is zero," he said of the band selection process. "Sharon and my son go through all of it. I don’t know what’s current, I’m too busy working on my own recording." "We’ve always been known to give new bands a stage and forum for their music," Sharon said of the second and third stage acts. "Look at Incubus, System of a Down, Godsmack. The list goes on and on, so we feel very honored that we have the opportunity to give these bands a stage and such a huge crowd to play in front of. You take a band like Drowning Pool, the first part of the Ozzfest last year, they didn’t even have a record out. They were on the third stage last year and played for twenty minutes. Now for the kids to see them on the main stage, playing forty-five minutes, you have growth. I think kids like to see that growth because they’ve helped to make those bands." Sharon also hinted that the presence of System and the Rage remnants might result in a more socially conscious metal festival vibe. "There’s going to be several new booths this year, apart from the WWF booths," she said. "There’s going to be one that deals with world situations that are going on right now, very political events. System of a Down have done that with Tom Morello and Chris Cornell. They will be giving information to the kids on world politics and other major issues that affect the kids of today." Ozzy did take a minute to address his family’s hit reality sitcom, The Osbournes. "I know all about the music industry, I don’t know anything about television, so it’s got me totally baffled," he said. "I’m walking down the street the other day and some people who wouldn’t normally stop me, and I’ve been on tour in Canada, so I’ve been blind to the response, and they stop me in the streets. In fact, an ambulance driving by said, [in loudspeaker voice] ‘Ozzy, good show man!’ and I’m kind of flipping out." Ozzy Osbourne Returns Home After Accident Jan 16, 3:26 PM (ET) By The Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) – Ozzy Osbourne is back home after injuring himself in an all-terrain vehicle accident in England more than a month ago. His wife, Sharon Osbourne, told her talk-show audience during the episode she taped Thursday in Los Angeles that her husband had returned to their house in Beverly Hills, Calif., the previous night. "I am so happy he’s home I can’t begin to tell you, but my poor husband is in so much agony, still in so much pain, he couldn’t sleep all night and the one thing is … he’s got this metal rod … instead of a collarbone now," she said during "The Sharon Osbourne Show" airing Jan. 22. "I am just so happy that he’s home ’cause all the time I … felt so lonely, like I’ve lost something," she added. "You know that feeling when you know you’ve lost something and what is it? It’s like, ‘Oh, it’s my husband!’" The 55-year-old metal star stopped breathing twice and was in a coma for eight days after the Dec. 8 crash. He fractured his collarbone, eight ribs and a neck vertebra when the 600-pound vehicle he was riding flipped and landed on top of him at his estate in Buckinghamshire, southern England. He spent a week on a ventilator.
