Question:
Ok, this is gear-unrelated, but I’ve just learned to play Teen Town *reasonably* accurately at about 100 bpm. I just felt like shouting very loudly. I’ve spent the past 3 days slaving over it. Btw, I’ve been playing since august and I’m 14. Now I just gotta get me’s a teacher so he can tell me I’m playing it all wrong.

I picked up the recent issue of Jazz Times with Jaco on the cove,r which had some very enlightening testimonials from the usual suspects: Zawinal, Metheny, Mitchell, etc. A very good update on the state of Jaco. Then, in the first few pages the mag was this idiotic editorial claiming that Jaco only appeals to musicians between the ages of 40 and 60, because they were around at the time he hit. What a bunch of nonsense, as the younger members of this group are proving at the moment. Thanks for letting me rant, Goopy
Response:
jaco only appeals to musicians with any sense of musical spirit. He only appeals to anyone who knows good jazz and can recognise talent. He only appeals to musicians striving to learn the instrument they play and how to push it’s boundaries… Sam

I found the latter to be most true. But then I’ve always had more jazz-orientated tastes in music than my nu-metal friends, so I tend to follow people like Jaco rather than Sam Rivers and Mark Hoppus. By and large, the aforementioned article is true in that most budding musicians (as in, 10-18 yrs old) will consider the bass player/drummer/etc from their favourite band to be their idol. If 40-60 yr olds today were heavily influenced by Jaco in their teens, then the statement would be correct…..however this doesn’t take into account Jaco’s influence after his death. Jaco’s music, although important to the musical world, is not as widely known in the pop/rock world. A 15 year old will be more likely to have heard of Pink Floyd than Weather Report, so any retro-trends in the music of teenagers today are largely rock-based rather than jazz and fusion. A friend of mine (same age) has played the bass for about 2 years and has NEVER HEARD of Jaco Pastorius. His idol is "the guy from Ozzy Osbourne". As I said, for people my age nowadays, it’s alot more common to look to your favourite band in order to find your favourite bass player. I know no 15 year old whose fav band is Weather Report…..and 40-60 yr olds were most likely more exposed to them when they were teenagers than we are now. The main reason I follow Jaco (I can’t speak for Sam W, but maybe the same reason) is that if I learn an instrument, I almost always look to find recordings of the most influential and/or best known artists. </rant> — TJ — "I haven’t failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work"

I’d venture to gamble this is how most of us found him, regardless of age. I was 15 at the time I first heard of him, but couldn’t grasp what he meant till I was 33. (I’m a bit slow… really) — -rob O> /() ^^
