Well, you can do a lot in a studio, but I still say he’s a better showman than a singer.

What makes Ozzy great? – Charisma – Affiliation and contribution to one of the greatest, most influential and pioneering heavy metal bands of all time, Black Sabbath. – His early ’80s comeback as a solo artist and leader of the band featuring the legendary Randy Rhoads. Also, it is his name on those two instantly classic albums, BoO and DoaM. – A sustained successful solo career for 20+ years in which he never fell out of favor with his fans. – 30+ years of service to the heavy metal cause – Ozzy has been a relevant and successful singer and entertainer in 5 different decades. This really is an amazing stat in the sense that he has maintained relevancy in a contemporary sense throughout his career while maintaining his success. – Charisma, his fans simply love the guy. Sure he has done some things over the years that have been embarrassing. Yes, he is paying the price both mentally and physically for his years of drug and alcohol abuse. No, he can’t run around like he used to. No, his voice is not what is used to be, and even in his prime he was never the world’s greatest vocalist. The bottom line is his past accomplishments far overshadow his current shortcomings. Hell, look at Muhammad Ali and the Pope as examples of enduring reverence in the midst of failing health. Ozzy Osbourne is nothing short of an icon. A living legend. The true Godfather of heavy metal. With all that said, however, I think this current wave of mainstream sucess may just be the kiss of death. The way the TV show has taken off and the subsequent general media acceptance and over exposure will lead to a merchandising onslaught and a contrived second season. It kind of reminds me of what happened with Kiss at the end of the ’70s.

My first Ozzy concert was in 1985 – I was surprised at his lack of agility and repetitive head shaking forward and backwards, which is still all he can about do, but he is simply mesmerizing and hypnotic for unexplainable reasons. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > No idea – whenever I’ve seen him live he can’t sing and moves about the > stage like a beached whale – BUT – he manages to competely control the > crowd, no idea why… > I really would like to know what makes Ozzy great?
