Question:
I think ATF and PS fluid are pretty much the same. Response:
Ford type F tranny fluid and PS fluid share the same basic qualities and type F can be used in a pinch however extended use of type F in you PS pump will cause excessive wear. Dextron III and up is major differance. — Leadfoot Thunder Snake #34 No replacment for displacment

If you havent driven much like that these guys are correct have a shop flush it whioch includes draining the converter. then add a goodconditioner and you should be alright. Dexron III is a detergent based fluid (sticky) while power steering fluid is paraphin (or however you spell it) (wax) based which has probably coated your clutches and bands. Leadfoot

If you shop around you can find a good deal on a trans rebuild. I paid $250 for mine and I supplied the kit. it turned out to be $300 because of broken parts not included in the kit. I took the trans out myself.

sounds like it needs an expensive rebuild. when you lose gears on an auto tranny, it’s usually too late and already wrecked. probably cheaper to replace it with a wrecker tranny. a simple flush probably won’t do it either. by the way, power steering fluid is basically automatic transmission fluid, if it’s a normal power steering system. so you may have just added auto tranny fluid to a tranny that was already on its way out.

Get that puppy to a decent tranny shop asap. don’t drive it, tow it. if they do a real flush, you should be alright assuming you haven’t driven too much on it. — Ben Sheehan St Lucie Cellular (561) 461-6160 A NOKIA Authorized Service Center

Response:
Can you have it towed to a shop that’ll do a tranny flush? That may very well fix it, I’m not a tranny tech., but that’s next logical step… > Well, there I was putting a pint of transmission fluid in my 83 Olds Cutlas > (350) when it hit me. Well, there I was putting a pint of transmission fluid in my 83 Olds Cutlas (350) when it hit me. I was holding a bottle of power steering fluid! Dang! I go in reverse just fine, but I no longer have any forward gears. Is this thing shot or is there still something I can do before I pull it out and replace it? Just hoping, nothing like this has happened to me before. The transmission shop says it’s totally shot, but of course, I thought I’d check around to be sure. Thanks for any advice.
