ROCK ON By MARY HUHN —- July 11, 2004 — Annual summer treats OZZfest and the Siren Music Festival, both taking on New York this week, couldn’t be more different. One has a Village of the Damned (with tattoo parlors and piercing booths), the other has the surf and the Cyclone. But this year, the ninth annual OZZfest, which rolls into the Tommy Hilfiger Jones Beach Theater on Wednesday and PNC Arts Center in New Jersey on Friday, has some tried-and-true metal acts that may persuade Williamsburg hipsters to be hard-rocking hellraisers for a day. It’s worth breaking out of the boroughs for OZZfest’s big reunions alone. In full glory will be headliner Black Sabbath – the original lineup led by bat-biting "Iron Man" and fest founder Ozzy Osbourne. And if that’s all you’re expecting, Judas Priest says: "You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’," with its own reunion lineup featuring original singer Rob Halford. Other familiar bands include Slayer, Slipknot and Superjoint Ritual. The second stage has newer bands, such as Hatebreed and Lacuna Coil. Meanwhile hipsters wil put on sunscreen and Converse sneakers on Saturday for the Village Voice Fourth Annual Siren Music Festival in Coney Island, which runs from noon to 9 p.m. No tickets are necessary – it’s free. The fest splashes down surfside with the usual diverse mix of punk, garage and pop-rock buzz bands on two stages. Death Cab for Cutie and Blonde Redhead take over twilight hours, but the lineup all day long is strong – from the opener Ponys to New York’s own fierce Fever and Mission of Burma, influential punkers from Boston. Tickets for OZZfest are available through Ticketmaster, at (212) 307-7171. See ozzfest.com and villagevoice.com for additional information.
