rear drum to disc swap

Question:

I’ll be scrounging the boneyards for better underpinnings soon, and would like to drop the stock rear drums on my ‘81 Imp in favor of discs at the same time.  Any ideas on donor cars, and what mods I’ll be looking at?  I assume the proportioning valve is one item that will need attention, what else?  Another poster suggested IROC wheels in my quest to achieve a decent stance.  Will switching from the old 15" steelies to F-Body wheels present any obscatcles?  (I don’t know the specs on the nicer rims…) Thanks all, Mark — Death is so final for only the living.                 –Ozzy Osbourne

Response:

You can use any early 80s fwd Cadillac, Toronado or Riveria for a 10 bolt rear end. Minor mods and machining required. Other than being cool putting rear disks on that Impala won’t really make a noticeable difference on the street.  But if you are going to do it check also on the police package brakes used on the early to late 80’s Caprices. A rare option to be sure but you might find a donor ex cruiser out there. Highway Patrols tended to go extra heavy on brakes and suspension while local police took the standard package that was offered. — Mike  ( Anti Spam Address ) "Opportunites are spawned from crisis"

I drive this car like a rented mule ;)   As budget allows, I intend to push this envelope as far as it will go, so four-corner discs is insurance I’d like to have early in the game. Did taxicabs often have the the police package underpinnings as well? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Other than being cool putting rear disks on that Impala won’t really > make a noticeable difference on the street.  But if you are going to do > it check also on the police package brakes used on the early to late > 80’s Caprices. If nothing else it will make it easier *changing* the brakes…

Response:

Can’t say for sure on the taxis but since they aren’t a high speed use probably had drum brakes. Find one parked someplace and peek under the back of it. — Mike  ( Anti Spam Address ) "Opportunites are spawned from crisis"
