Marvel Mystery Oil question

Question:

>i think $ 4000-$6000 is just a tad steep i redid my 350 for about $400

also dont use marvel on an old engine, you will kill it. it will loosen up all the deposits and gunk and clog the oil passages and result in no oil pressure

Response:

If it only smokes on startup, then most likely the valve seals are shot. Any reputable mechanic can change these ( on the car without pulling the heads) for minimal expense. You can get a decent rebuilt long block from several engine places for around $800 not installed. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I have 1 1985 Chevy Caprice with 270,000 miles.  Bob, Thnaks for the reply. Well, used car prices are pretty cheap these days, what with the oversupply of new cars out there. $4 to $6 K for overhaul. WOW.   I wil look for a used car for around one or 2 $K. There are plenty out there with around 100K miles.  Let’s see , that gives me about 170K more miles to go before I get into the mechanical situation I am in now  :) Current situation  :  a)  head gasket coolant leak fixed withBarrs Leak. b)  lots of smoke at startup. c)  trans dripping enough to leave embarrassing spots on road.  Have heard that the sealant for trans will kill the trans eventually, so cant use it. Trans shop wants $500 minimum to fix the leak.!! The miracle is that it passed inspection 2 weeks ago !! My Jekyll Doesn’t Hyde  :::  Ozzy Osbourne

$4000-6000 for a rebuilt motor???  Im sorry, i dont believe a Chevy motor is gonna be twice as much as a Mitsubishi… Bob, if i were you, contact a local wrecking yard.  You usually can find a good used motor for under a 1000.  I called my local wrecker, hes got a 2.6 litre mitsubishi for my 86 Plymouth Voyager for only $250 with exchange, and thats the complete motor with manifolds, etc.  The motor just had a bunch of work done on it and the owner totalled it.   Just ask around and see if you can find someone who knows about a local wrecker.  You can probably find a car that was well maintained yet some moron decided to crush the rear end with his big old Ford. Im sure you can save alot by getting a used motor or even rebuilding it yourself. visit Alliance Computer Services at www.bcity.com/alliancecs

She deserves the money needed for an overhaul if the rest like the suspension, trans, body and interior is worth it.   An overhaul/short block should run about $4000.00-$6000.00.  You have to decide if what you will have after the work will be better than what you can buy for that price PLUS the value of the Caprice NOW taking into consideration you will stil have a 14 year old car. I have 1 1985 Chevy Caprice with 270,000 miles. It is starting to smoke a lot, but only at startup. Kind of embarrassing. I know it is either rings or valve seals / guides. I tried Bardhal NoSmoke. May have reduced smoke a little, not much. What about using MM oil. My only hope is that some or all of the rings are sludged up or carboned up and that the mm oil will free them up. This theory would assume that even though the rings are not free, in their present state, the whole system expands and seals itself after a minute or two of smoky idling. I am also concerned the the MM oil may make my smoking worse, as it cleans out any sludged up passages! Guess I shouldn’t complain after 270,000 miles ! :)  Just trying to help the car. Any thoughts on this problem are welcomed !!!! TIA, John
