help me assess water damage/repairs to Dodge Spirit?

Question:

Would the owner be willing to change all those fluids *before* the sale (in your presence), giving you an opportunity to inspect the used fluids for the presence of water?  It would at least help to reduce the risks… If the water rose to the level of the air intake snorkel, check for water and debris in there before trying to start it. Also–if the carpet is soaked, it can hold water against the floorboards adn start corrosion. I’m sure someone else can think of other importnat stuff… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Somebody I know has a 92 Dodge Spirit 4 door, 90,000 mi. that he has > offered for $600.  It has aluminum wheels, new tires, and seems clean > and in good shape EXCEPT it has been in high water. > It was parked on the street and water got high enough to get inside the > car but it didn’t cover the engine or get inside the engine.  Basically, > water got just high enough to get inside the car interior.  So, aside >         changing the transmission fluid changing the differential fluid >         changing the engine oil deodorizing the carpet > Are there other things I need to think about or watch out for?  Brakes? > Axles?  Suspension?  Spindles? > Kelly bluebooked it for ~$1800 in ‘good condition’.  Can I come out on > this? Somebody I know has a 92 Dodge Spirit 4 door, 90,000 mi. that he has offered for $600.  It has aluminum wheels, new tires, and seems clean and in good shape EXCEPT it has been in high water. It was parked on the street and water got high enough to get inside the car but it didn’t cover the engine or get inside the engine.  Basically, water         changing the transmission fluid         changing the differential fluid         changing the engine oil         deodorizing the carpet Are there other things I need to think about or watch out for?  Brakes? Axles?  Suspension?  Spindles? Kelly bluebooked it for ~$1800 in ‘good condition’.  Can I come out on this? I think I can get him down $100 for sure and maybe more.

Silt from flood waters can and will enter EVERYWHERE.  To be safe, I would overhaul the trans, lower end of the engine, rear end and all bearings and/or wear surfaces.  When I was in highschool, the school was given a ‘72 GTO that had been in a flood, for its Automotive Class.  I didn’t think it was possible for silt to enter some of the places we found it.  Great education though – COMPLETE disassembly, cleaning and re-assembly of the entire car.  Hell, we even got it running again.  (some of the wiring was screwed up though – hit the horn button and the lights came on  :-) — The probability of someone watching you is directly proportional to the stupidity of your actions.

Response:

Your biggest problem will be odors, mould, body corrosion, and electrical corrosion.  Don’t pay too much and expect mystery problems as the various electrical wiring turns green and starts to fail.
