Censorship?

Question:

Has anyone else had this experience? It seems like everytime I say something really sexy and/or clever on the Ozzynet message board that I get that bit about a syntax error violation # blah – blah! Yet these assholes who want to insult ozzy get printed! Maybe I am just PARANOID?    ~Suzanne *Take a trip to the OzzMania Zone* http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Lounge/6255/

Response:

Censorship Sucks & all  those fukin assholes who insult Ozzy can all just Fuck Off! You should be able to say what the fuck you like Suzanne. After all it’s not a fukin Barry Manalow site! It’s an Ozzy Osbourne sight for Christ’s sake & they should treat it like one for him who beleives in this freedom to do so. I fully understand where you are comming from.

Response:

Well, actually, I’m not sure if it really is "censorship" as such in this case (which is why I added a question-mark). But it seems like lots of people say they get the "syntax error" message on the Ozzynet message site. I am just curious what causes this. Since syntax refers to a systematic arrangement, then there is perhaps "error" in the word or letter order. I don’t know much about computer science, but yet it seems completely feasible to me that a software program could easily enough be created which would screen out certain buzz-words, defining that "case" with certain letters and/or numbers under the syntax violation code. (To "protect" those under 18 for legality precautions, etc.?) Yet, other times, observing the list defies this explanation; nor does it explain why sometimes simply minor changes may correct this. People experiment with these things, if you notice.. they’ll switch to all caps or all small letters or deliberately misspell a "bad word",  or whatever. Sometimes I think computer signals get confused and then the situation clears on its’ own. Whatever – I am just speculating! It still remains a mystery…    ~Suzanne *Take a trip to the OzzMania Zone* http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Lounge/6255/

I’m sure you can, but most filtered message boards I’ve been too are able to either replace the word being filtered with a simple *(You mother ****er!) while others are more creative(replacing "sucks" with "pulls", and no, I’m not making this up, I’ve seen this one before) > (To "protect" those under 18 for legality precautions, etc.?)

Hmm, you’d think they’d simply put a warning or use one of the above mentioned filter methods… > Yet, other > times, observing the list defies this explanation; nor does it explain > why sometimes simply minor changes may correct this. I’m not on this list, but if it was a filter screwing up the messages, typing the word in all caps or small letters shouldn’t have any effect, the word would be filtered either way(misspelling is a common way around those too, I’m no expert either) > Sometimes I think computer signals get confused and then the situation > clears on its’ own. If it only screws up messages that have "sensitive" content, it’s probably a filter, if not it’s probably just a server problem. >    ~Suzanne > *Take a trip to the OzzMania Zone* > http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Lounge/6255/
