1981 DeVille delay wipers…

Question:

I had to put a new washer pump in my 85 caprice. The circuit board for the delay is in the pump, and the new circ board works differently from the old. Same thing as you : they go into park position during the delay ! but the instructions mention that and say it is a good thing   :)  Cheapo from autozone.  $14.95 I think. I am happy with it.

Response:

Well, after trying 2 different aftermarket motors, and neither of them working properly, I went to a wrecker and found the washer pump assembly with the delay controls. I cleaned the two copper contact bypass switches and voila! now the delay wipers and washer system all work like it’s supposed to. I hope it stays that way for a while. Thanks for all the replies, Daniel

RingWraitH, I am using the OEM wiper control in the dash. Apparently the pump I have is aftermarket, and is supposed to replace the OEM washer pump. Too bad it doesn’t work! Daniel

I got a delay control module from JCWhitney for my ‘81 Impala once.  The wipers will return to the park positition, because all the control does is create an open in the motor circuit that is intermittently closed long enough to force the wipers to swipe.  If I set a delay with the OEM wiper control on high, the blades will only bounce in and out of park like you have experienced.  I think it’s just the nature of the beast if you’re going to use one of these little devices. As long as they wipe the glass on longer delays, it’s about as good as you’re going to get. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Well, if it isn’t the antenna, it’s the wipers. Well, if it isn’t the antenna, it’s the wipers. I looked at the motor and it was worn out, so I replaced it the motor and the pump assembly. Of course, the washer motor sits on the wiper motor, and I couldn’t find an OEM-equivalent washer pump for it (probably cost too much anyway.) So I have this part from "Trico" and it’s a POS. It looks like the delay is integrated on the board with the washer pump. (Not 100% sure though.) Low, medium, high and washer work on it now, but the delay does not. Every time it stops to wait, it parks the wipers! And if you set a short delay, the wipers just go in and out of park mode without actually wiping the windshield! So I tried 3 different wiper switches and they all do the same thing, so I’m assuming the washer motor assy is bad. Am I on the right track? Thanks, Daniel
