Yeah, I’ve never payed more than $45/h for VIOLIN lessons, but I guess the cost of living is a bit higher in New York than it is in Alabama. -Maitland

I’ve been practicing on my own for the past 5 weeks or so and I’ve come to the conclusion that bass lessons are necessary. I mean, I could learn on my own, but I was playing, and this kid that’s been playing for five years instanty pointed out several problems with the way I held the bass. Also, sometimes my thumb hurts while playing, especially fast, repetitive stuff. I think I might be doing something wrong. I can progress quicker with a teacher, and I won’t learn stuff poorly. Also, I’ll probably understand the theory. Right now, I’m learning major and minor etc. triads within the A major key, and the inversions and the Bassic forms, and well, I don’t really see WHAT it means. I’d like to not have to go back and unlearn stuff. His teacher is Chris Ulrich  (no relation to the Metallica Ulrich) anyone ever heard of him? This is in NYC. If so, is he good? He’ll charge $60/hour or something like that. I haven’t called him but I have his phone number. What do you think? Thank You

I think that taking lessons is the best investment any musician can make, and it’s one of the most important steps you can take if you want to play professionally. Finding the right teacher is very important.  For me, I had to find someone who could teach technique and theory in a way that I found useful, so I found a working musician who helped me learn a lot about the role of a bassist and the life of a professional musician, as well as the letters and numbers.     I’d say that there can’t be any harm in calling a few different teachers in your area, and seeing if you click with any of them.  I see my teacher as a friend and in my opinion, finding someone you can get along with will make the learning much more enjoyable.     Also, some people swear by being self-taught or list off many musicians who never took lessons or don’t know theory.  I see it this way: I want every tool I can when I go into an audition, or play a gig.  There’s always someone out there who’s better or faster or saner, so anything I can pull out of my bag of tricks is a plus.  Sometimes being able to pick up that they’re playing an Aeolian mode, understanding the ins and outs of that 9th chord, or having clean technique to sound great and play for a long while, is just enough to tip the scale and give you the gig.     -Jonathan     www.badspatula.com
