New Band Question ?

Question:

Me and a couple friends started a band about a year ago. Here’s all the cover songs we play: 1. "Head Like A Hole" – Nine Inch Nails 2. "The Nobodies" – Marilyn Manson 3. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" – Metallica 4. "The Beautiful People" – Marilyn Manson 5. "…Baby One More Time" – Britney Spears 6. "King Kill 33" – Marilyn Manson Out of all those, we stay fairly close to the original, except for "…Baby One More Time". We make it a lot more agressive of course. Marilyn Manson sort of dominates our tally of cover songs, but that’s alright. I seem to always be the one to come up with what songs we do, and MM is my favorite band and I can play just about all their songs on bass, so I like to do those. But "The Nobodies" is a great song. If you’ve got a three-piece band, it can sound so good. I sing it and play bass. The guitarist can play the harpsichord parts, and the drums are pretty simple as well. But it is a very meaningful, cool song. I probably went into a lot more crap than I should have, but…

Response:

ZZ Top. First song I ever learnt to play was TV Dinners. I can play it on the bass and drums. I’m so good.

Response:

In my first band, we were too bad to actually play any covers so we just made up stuff ourselves so that it was simple enough to play.

Response:

Never underestimate Dave Grohl’s playing….the chorus beat for Smells Like Teen Spirit is amazingly hard to play correctly.

being a complete newbie i don’t know much but imo look at punk tunes (Blink182 has the same line up so it won’t be to hard to adapt, and there tunes don’t seem to be that complex (even so there still great)), punk is usually quiet simple. But you might hate blink 182 so i don’t know… VaKo

No might about it.I hate blink182. good fun stuff to play in a tight 3-piece though.Oh yes. (Hendrix cornered the market in that type of line up IMO)

lol, Nirvana might be worth taking a look at. I’d just try the stuff i like, and that works as a threepiece, so i’d go for kerrang-ish type bands. Just as long as it isn’t Linkin Park [evil glint in eyes] VaKo

Response:

maybe try some limp bizkit, some of their tunes are a little tough but with a bit of practice rn’t too bad, except the drummer may have a hard time unless he just improvises also  some Silverchair, their a good band to start out one, songs like Undecided, Israel’s Son and Pure Massacre. Also how bout Rage Against the Machine. I’m just thinking of tunes my band first started playing so may help. Also Godsmack have songs that are easy, but good (eg. Moonbaby)

1st consideration..what do you want to do with the band? If you want bar gigs, do some research on the the bars you want to play in.  Learn what sells there, and tailor the act to your clients and their customers.  Don’t forget the business aspect of a band. Parties for your friends, etc..same thing. Learn what they like. Playing for your own enjoyment and to satisfy your soul? Then it’s only your taste and what you want that counts. If you’re early beginners, don’t turn your noses up at the rudimentary bar room tunes.  You’ll have the satisfaction of being able to perform simple tunes well. You to can re-arrange "Louie Louie". Don’t be concerned that you can’t do "note for note" reproductions. Whoever your heros are, why try to completly imitate them.. it’s been done.  Keep the signature licks in place, but develop your style. Many tunes sound great on the recordings, but are not at all suitable for for live performance..they are strictly studio creations intended for airplay and stereo systems.  Try to distinguish that class of material from "live" material.
