I thought those guys use EMG’s.

Maybe by then, but I believe that on Puppets James was still playing his Gibson V and Explorer, which had original pickups for quite a while. They did go to EMGs sometime though. They actually had a decent tone on Puppets so I assume they were using Marshall and Gibsons still.

Actually they switched over to Boogie at the time of Puppets. The tone was incredibly smooth as metal distortion goes… As well as the low end punch courtesy of Cliff. Puppets is a metal masterpiece IMO, and Metallica never topped it as far as I’m concerned. If those were Boogies then they sounded better than my Triple Rectifier ever did. James has a good ear for tone (as much as a metal player can have tone) and he plays really tight.
