incredibly stupid, but true

Question:

: The solo involves a lot of tapping. The big problem is that I can’t : reposition my pick fast enough when I have to play normal again. : It takes me about 1 second to get the pick right, but I only have about 0.5 : second before I have to play again. : I find this very irritating. Is there any kind of trick or something to do : it faster? Hey Pascal,         I’ve found that if I tap with my middle, ring, and pinky fingers, I can still hold the pick properly with the index and thumb.  This saves a lot of time while transitioning from picking to tapping.         Hope this helps. Response:

When I do tapping, I always use my middle finger. (I’ve never played live, but I’ve always imagined how it would be interesting to "insult" my audience as I entertained them. :) Or you can learn to play VanHalen style.  I’ve read that he plays by holding the pick between thumb and middle finger.  That leaves the index free for tapping.  Strange, but obviously effective. I used to hold my pickmainly between thumb and first, but used my middle as well to bend a thin pick so you could "copy" a thicker pick without changing when necessary, got so I always had tthree fingers on the pick! Until recently when I picked up two drimking glasses with my left hand to put them away after washing them.  The glasses slipped out of my hand, hit the counter top, one broke and bounced somewhat but in bouncing, the broken edge stabbed the inside of my right wrist, about 1.5mm  from that artery, although I didnt know that for a few hours!  Felt like my hand exploded, 5 hours in the local A&E, partly coz they lost my x-ray and when they found them, put me to the bottom of the queue! Anyway, So very fortunately all I actually did was bruise the nerve!  Could have been so much worse!  I now have a very number middle finger and still partly numb first and some of my palm is still numb.  That does mean I can do bery little effectively with my middle finger (keep those dirty minds clean!) including holding my pick, so I’ve been forced to retrain myself into holding it with thumb and first finger only, real strange at first, almost like remembering a long forgotten skill, but its getting there!  Does mean any right hand hammering is out for a while but, I’ll stick to stuff that doesnt need it. — Iain! You hold the pick between thumb and first finger?  Leave it there and hammer with an other fingers maybe? — Iain! hi, I am learning the solo from "one" from metallica and it goes really well, except for one small stupid thing. The solo involves a lot of tapping. The big problem is that I can’t reposition my pick fast enough when I have to play normal again. It takes me about 1 second to get the pick right, but I only have about 0.5 second before I have to play again. I find this very irritating. Is there any kind of trick or something to do it faster? tnx Pascal De Paus
