Geddy Lee..or should I say..GODdy Lee?

Question:

Ok. Two words…GEDDY LEE.         Nuff said?         Apparently not, cause theres no post on this ALT about Geddy Lee.         I’ll keep it short. If you haven’t already, or don’t like Rush, but are a Bass player, I think that you owe it to yourself to at least listen to his style and techniques just for the knowledge that he has to offer. Listen to any song off of Hemispheres for his experimental, progressive approach, or to Presto or Hold Your Fire for more refined, but still powerful and brilliant bass lines.  Hell, listen to any Rush album.                                         Geddy, Chris Squire, Les Claypool, Victor Wooten, and god rest their souls, Cliff Burton and last but not least, Jaco Pastorius.  Check these guys out, and then regress back into your normal influences. If you listen hars, and listen good, you may…just may…change some way that you look at the bass as an insturment, I guarantee it. (Victor Wooten is with "Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Chris Squire with "Yes" Cliff Burton"Metallica" and Jaco pastorius…GOD.) Sincerely, Brandon Moses (Posting on Alex Oeming’s Computer)

Response:

You are right! Geddee Lee is the Bass GOD and RUSH is the greatest, most talent ed band (one word: NEIL PEART) on this side of the galaxy.  Les Claypool himsel f said that RUSH’s influence on him was so huge that "if it wasn’t for Geddee L ee I wouldn’t be playing BAss today".  I saw RUSH live in Chicago on the 28th, talk about a religious experience! THROW OFF THOSE CHAINS OF REASON AND YOUR PRISON DISAPPEARS.." NEIL PEART

[other stuff deleted] Geddy is a phenomenal musician and bassist, as are all of the others you mentioned, but your forgot perhaps the most important bassist of the 20th century. James Jamerson of Motown Records fame…he is the predominant influence of groove oriented bass playing as we know it today… Lee and Claypool had their influences too, you know. And don’t forget Steve Harris of Iron Maiden…one of the best balls-to-the-wall bassists in metal history…his fingers are always flying! Nuff said, George ‘King’ Kirk         ‘Are we the last ones left alive, Wilfrid Laurier University                                 -Peart/RUSH (a UWO wanna-be)           ‘Infinite dreams…I can’t deny them…infinity is Waterloo, Ontario           hard to comprehend…I couldn’t hear those screams Can-a-duh                   even in my wildest dreams…’  -Harris/Iron Maiden
