Question:
i’m in the market for a fuzz pedal to play bass thru, the distortion pedal i use right now is really a guitar distortion pedal (boss ds-1), and i’ve heard that bass thru a big muff sounds pretty nice. the distortion pedal i use, on the other hand, makes the distorted signal quieter than when it’s clean. this is wrong, so i’m trying to find a pedal that won’t do this. since the big muff is a fuzz box, i’m looking for a fuzz box that isn’t so damn expensive. big muffs, if electro-harmonix, are sometimes in the $100 range or more, and the sovtek ones are pretty pricey too. there’s this guy who happens to be selling a boss FZ-2 hyper fuzz (silver pedal) in a neighboring town for $40. that’s a bargain, i’m thinking, but i dunno what the thing will sound like. i wanted to know if anybody has tried playing bass thru this pedal and if i should go for it, or pass. and if i should pass, are any of the other fuzzboxes worth looking at (e.g dunlop fuzz face, jimi hendrix, dod classic fuzz), or should i just bite the bullet and go buy a "bass distortion, or bass grunge?" thanks, marty
Response:
I highly recommend buying one of the new Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi Reissues…..the brand new black ones with the better footswitch…..I got mine at cool! I use it mostly to play Anesthesia-Pulling Teeth with it (Metallica)…..but then again…I mostly play that song as well!
Anyway, I highly highly suggest at least looking into it….it’s a cheaply priced, kick-ass pedal that has yet to let me down (it’s metal and the tone is simply gorgeous….I doubt it ever will).
