Question:
I’m wondering what effects Cliff Burton used on Orion at the beginning (this is a Metallica song by the way)… the part of the song I’m referring to is the opening.. it sounds like a distorted growling organ/synth according to some transcription.. but personally I think its a combination of the following.. I’m not sure correct me if I’m wrong: Octave Pedal: to simulate a synth bass Slight Distortion: for the growl Compressor: to keep the volume sounding as constant as it does Chorus too perhaps? ..also I’m wondering if it’s just me, or does cliff harmonize with the guitar towards the end of the 2nd guitar so and play the fast opening lick in the beginning as well? Any how all I can say is that song is a masterpiece, any one who hasn’t heard it should check it .. if you don’t like metal.. don’t worry, it’s an instrumental -Happy Fishing

I have an interview with Kirk Hammet in Guitar Magazine ( from 1987 ) in which he states that they did use a distorted Hammond (?) organ for that intro. >…also I’m wondering if it’s just me, or does cliff harmonize with the guitar >towards the end of the 2nd guitar so and play the fast opening lick in the >beginning as well?
I’ve always thought that Cliff did play on this fast part, although no transcriptions that I have seen ever show it.
