Why bassists are IT- about guitarists…

Question:

hey thats their job…. Singers take the white hot spotlight, guitarists run around the top being flashy loud and noticable and bassists sit in the groove. Why get pissed off when a lion isn’t vegetarian. P.S. this of course assumes musical principles are secondary to showmanship ;o)

Response:

"I think this has got something to do with attitude. Serving the music instead of serving your own ego!  There just seems to be a certain camaraderie between bassists or drummers or even drummers and bassists.  Two guitar players get in a room and it’s like war. They’ll hardly even LOOK at each other. But get a bunch of drummers or bassists in bunch and were all pals at once!  My theory it that we act that way because to us it’s obvious we are "it" and therefore don’t have to "prove" it to anyone!" -Benjamin Jacoby Man, you are so right! If there’s one thing I’ve learned abouyt guitarists is that they will not be listed in my "friendly-musicians" book. What is their problem y’know? Always braggin the shit out, always playing the same old lame heavymetal riff, that is exacly the one WE hate most… I’d have to say, there is a big difference between the "rock-types" and the "jazz-types". Those into jazz, are usually more quiet, and play a lot better too. They don’t have to rely on playing with lot’s of distortion, or heavy chords. I know both types, and the ones I hang with, are the jazzy plonkers… Bassists are the friendliest ppl on earth I think. We relate much better to eachother. Plus, the fact that there aren’t many, so we have to stick together! (Ever heard Dave Pomeroy: "The Day The Bassplayers Took Over The World") Peace, Merijn

Response:

right on.

> right on.

Went to a ‘Jazz Night’ wednesday night at my daughters middle school. Five middle school Jazz Bands were playing. The guitarist came out, set-up in the front of the stage, effects boxes at the ready, and settled into Heavy-Metal, guitar at the knees battle stance.  Didn’t play much of anything, just wailed once in awhile, totally self-serving.  The teeny-boppers loved it of course (sigh). The bass players, by contrast, set-up in the rear of the stage, basses in traditional Jazz position (chest high), sheet music in hand and just played solid jazz bass.  And yeah, they all had that bass player cool about them. We will subdue them in time.  It’s inevitable. Before you buy.

Response:

You got it. Bassists and drummers *are* it! Nothing I like more than locking in strong to the drummer’s groove. Even if the drummer is crap, I still lock into them, bassits and drummers work together! We *don’t* need to prove anything to anyone!!
