Question:
I play lead in a metal-core band. Before I set out on my endless scavenger hunt for the "perfect cabinet," I was looking for some ideas to keep me from wandering aimlessly. In your opinion what cabinets out there have the crunchiest sound and most brutal lows? I play a detuned 7-string thru a mesa triple rect. I am looking for something that can punish and help me rumble the shit out of people. Price does not matter to me. Thanks for your input.
Response:
As much as anything you probably need to consider the speakers that are in the cabinet. I’d say go with the old Marshall cabinets with 4 Celestion speakers, but you’ve heard that setup thousands of times before. Is that the sound you want? A full Marshall stack powered by your Mesa sounds like the ticket to me, but I’m only taking a wild guess. Pete > I play lead in a metal-core band. For the crunchiest sound, I was gonna recommend Captain Crunch. Then I read you are looking to punish and rumble the shit out of people. Jeeze, I wanna be in your audience – not.

I have had some pretty decent low end response from my old KMD 4X12, celestion equiped cabinet. I use it with an old Randall RG100ES head. I have even seen these cabinets used in my local used music store for $200. I don’t know if they are even being made anymore. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I play lead in a metal-core band. How about stacking up piles of Marshall 1936, 2×12 cabs with the G12-75s in ‘em. May want to rewire with both 12’s in series, that’d make a 32 Ohm cab run two of ‘em and set the amp at 16 or use four and set the amp at 8. Those go boom pretty big. You’re gonna need a different amp too. Mesa’s have no crunchy low end.

in reply to the above post: yeah, that really helps the guy not why even bother posting if you have absolutely nothing productive to say? boredom? angst? tell me, i’d like to know. in reply to the original poster: as for crunchiest sound, vht cabs are damned good sounding if you want to just be able to go buy one. if you really want the best speaker/cabinet combination, build it yourself. kg — I know that the twelve notes in each octave and the varieties of rhythm offer me opportunities that all of human genius will never exhaust. –Igor Stravinski Before you buy.

I use the 1936 cabs all of the time and prefer them to the 1960 (4×12) cab. They definitely have a nice bottom to them and are not as "beamy" as the 4×12. Frank Silano — ======= <>< ======= FrankenCat Productions http://www.frankencat.com Rockin’ for Jesus! ======= <>< =======
