what kind of music

Question:

Current opinion is an 80’s themed disco (thought of *before* we heard of "The Wedding Singer"), with my brother’s band playing for half-an-hour before and after the disco.  Their musical taste is mixed (all aged 14-16!!!!), so far he’s suggested The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix as well as a couple of original songs. This past December 20, 1997, my younger sister & brother got married. (It was a double wedding.  They did not get married to each other! :-) )  Anyway, the music was ALL swing, ALL night (well, there were a few exceptions…one for a country song for our parents & one for a Cure song for my brother & his bride)  It was fantastic!!  They used both the "new" swing & the old traditional swing/big band from the 40’s.  Several members of the bridal party (especially my sister) went took a few swing lessons.  My sis & her guy even coreographed their first dance!  It was probably one of the best weddings I’ve been too!  Even though most of the music was unfamiliar to most of the guests, everyone had a great time!! As for my wedding, we’ll probably have a mish-mosh of swing & 80’s & 90’s alternative… :-) heather (& jeff) August 7, 1999

Not weird at all. Swing and big band dance music is becoming increasingly popular among the younger generation and of course most "older" folks never stopped liking it. Mike Cohn Good Vibrations Music http://members.aol.com/jazzone

Oh yes … swing is a *great* idea!!! There is a reason it’s making a huge comeback right now with groups like Squirrel Nut Zippers and Cherry Poppindaddies … it is happy, danceable, FUN music.  And I doubt it would not be too "weird" … it’s almost become mainstream again. The band we’ve hired for our reception does polkas (we are both of Eastern European descent) as well as ballroom and swing.  We love it and we think our guests will too … AND we got an amazing deal because many people still go for the traditional "cover" bands, having no idea what they’re missing … If you want all kinds of variety you can always hire a DJ, but there is something about live music, especially classic music that’s stood the test of time! I’m having a swing band, so if it’s weird then so be it! I think swing is a fabulous idea.  I’m not too particular about most of the details of my wedding, but I’ve been set on doing swing from day 1.  Anyone can dance to it, and something about the music seems to make people want to dance.  To me, it seems more fun and lively and somehow more neutral than forcing my guests to suffer through 2 hours of "lite pop".  now I just have to decide if I’ll get a dj or shell out the bucks for a band. tiffany (may 1999 if I don’t get frustrated and elope first) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hello everyone >I was wondering what type of music (if any) you all were having at your >receptions.  I would really like to have some fun dance music (maybe even >SWING!!) but maybe that would be too weird…really curious to hear what the >rest of you are planning. >thanks! >kml

Swing is making a HUGE comeback, especially at the weddings… Many new groups are making lots of new stuff… Here are a few: Squirrel Nut Zippers Cherry Poppindaddies Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Brian Setzer Orchestra and many others!! Of course there is still the ‘old style’ of swing music too!! But as someone else has already said, make sure you don’t JUST have one kind of music… Remember that not everyone knows how to swing!  Big Band is always great, especially for people who grew up on it! As Shelley said, she is having some more mellow music for dinner, which I highly recommend… Classical or light Jazz is fine, but people want to talk to each other over the dinner and unlike the cocktial hour, they are not usually face-to-face… It’s much harder to talk nicely when it’s across a table and the music is too loud… So, from my experience (and in my opinion), the best way to go for Cocktail music is some ‘upbeat’ Contempory Jazz and other Contemporary music (Radio Style) which will make people feel ‘at ease’… I like Donald Fagen (from Steely Dan), Chris Isaak, Luther Vandross, Shania Twain, Linda Rhonstad and other upbeat but not too heavy artists… For dinner, instrumentals work best for me… Piano, acoustic guitar, etc… Then on to the dancing!!  Mix it up so everyone has a good time!!  Different music that will appeal to everyone… Have a fantastic wedding!!   Well, knowing my phiance…we are gonna have many types of music.   Our musical tastes are varied as are the tastes of our guests.  We’ll have music ranging from Classical(like Bethoven) to New Age(Kitaro) with different styles intermingled.  I know my phiance also wants to do some Rennaisance dancing as well as she is a member of the SCA.   Remember, the wedding is YOURS.  Have the music you like, just remember that your guests have musical tastes also so try not to offend anyone.  In other words, if you’re into Heavy Metal and your family isn’t…not really a good idea to have it at your wedding  :).    Frank & Deb     05/30/99

If we weren’t having ethnic (heavy on the klezmer), swing would have been the next choice. People who know how to swing dance love it and people who don’t can fake it pretty easily and still have a great time. If you like it–go for it. Miriam Lewis "Merely corroborative detail intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative."–from "The Mikado"

I was at a wedding last weekend where some "swing" was played. It was great! People were dancing all over the place – after a few couples got things going of course. It was funny to watch everyone trying out different moves. Also the little kids at the wedding loved it, they had a blast. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hello everyone >I was wondering what type of music (if any) you all were having at your >receptions.  I would really like to have some fun dance music (maybe even >SWING!!) but maybe that would be too weird…really curious to hear what the >rest of you are planning. >thanks! >kml
