What is a good 5-string?

Question:

I am interested in buying a 5-string and wondering what is quality and what is not quality.  I am a beginner (one year of playing) and am looking for a bass in the 500 -1000$ range.  All suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated. ): "Music self-played is happiness self-made." Shane

well of course you arent going to get a totally unbiased answer from anyone on this one.. nor are you going to get a totally straight one… because everyone has their own tastes and styles.. but in *my* opinion… i dig the Ibanez Soundgear/Ergodyne models the best.. ive had an SR825 5-string for 6+ months now… and i still totally love the thing.. good feel to it.. good looks.. sounds totally killer for my style <Metal/hip-hop./Funk>.. good price <about 650>.. the only beef i have with it is that with the 5th string.. you have to move the saddle towards the neck.. or else you cant get the string in/out.. because B strings are too fat and unflexible to bend enough to just move around… but unless youre changing strings every day.. thats no major problem.     but this is just my opinion.. if i were you.. id go to the guitar shop… check out the ibanez line.. then go check out every other line they have there.. and compare.. and see what you sound the best.. cuz what may sound groovy to me may sound like a mashed cat to you. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I am interested in buying a 5-string and wondering what is quality and what > is not quality.  I am a beginner (one year of playing) and am looking for a > bass in the 500 -1000$ range.  All suggestions are welcome and greatly > appreciated. > ): > "Music self-played is happiness self-made." > Shane

Mooseboy speaks the truth.  I would add that Ibanez 5-strings are well balanced, in other words, they sit at just the right angle when you’re strapped in, they aren’t too heavy, and they aren’t insanely overpriced.  My only question:  What is that skinny 5th string used for???

Response:

When I need that I play this other thing called a guitar…

*laugh* I dunno ’bout you, but I can’t live without it! Don’t like BEAD tuning on a four string just for that reason, I need the higher strings for contrast or if I’m playing some Iron Maiden =) Chris

Whatever, I just like to vary my basslines a little, get out of the sludge and come up for some air for a while ;) Chris
