In my experience I’ve had good luck with Thomastick-Infeld Jazz flatwounds. Deep tone with just the right amount of top. At 38 bucks a set they’re pricey. You can find mail order places on line that are much cheaper than Guitar Center.

Thomastik Jazz Flats, no doubt. Check some of the net mail order places and you can get them for close to $30; flats are hard to find in most music stores. I grew up on Fender Flats, then the Black Tapes, and then the green ones. I had a set of Pyramid Flats on one of my basses and found them very nice for Jazz and R&B. Their sustain lasts a long time too. Regards, Rich Koerner, Time Electronics. http://www.timeelect.com Service * Repair * Modifications * Design Engineering Live Sound & Studio Production
