Question:
I am looking to get a new amp. Is the workingmans 12 big enough to play rock music (not metal) in medium sized bars? I am looking for a good sounding amp big enough for small/medium gigs and versataile enough for practicing. Any help is appreciated. New B. Player

Sometimes? I have the 12. On occassion, it was plenty. Other times, it was inaudible. If the stage allows your band to spread out a little, and the walls have curtains or something sound-absorbant on them, and the sound guy is pushing your bass through the system, then it’ll probably be ok. If you are playing on a little plank that the bar wedged into a corner and you are crouched under a couple of crash cymbals, and the walls are mirrors making the drums even louder (yes, this happens to me a lot), then you won’t hear it. The 12 allows expansion and I added a 2×10 cab. I never play without the cab now. I just set the 2×10 up on its side and put the 12 on top. I’d like to think that it’s the increased volume of air that makes me hear it better, but it’s probably just the fact that the 12 is now hitting my back instead of my feet. Unfortunately, the limiter light flashes quite often. I have played it with a 4×10 and a 1×15. The 4×10 definitely made a difference but the size is prohibitive for me. -Ryan www.bricktop.net

IMO you will definitely need something bigger unless you are going through the PA. I played a 100 watt ampeg combo with a 15" speaker at gigs for awhile and though it sounded great, it was just not loud enough to keep up in a rock band/club setting and I came home with huge blisters on my plucking hand after every gig. Though the ampeg is perfect for practicing and playing small rooms, I had to switch to a 400 watt head and a 4X10 cab to be comfortable at a medium sized bar. Andrew Thompson

I’ve tried playing rock in a medium size bar with a working mans 15 and it didn’t cut it. So I would say the 12 definitely wouldn’t Jay S
