scary bass

Question:

I was just trying to not sound like a Jazz Snob.  I tried to include an example from Fusion, Punk, and Jazz history to show that there is a large diversity in what people consider famous and great.  At some point Flea was voted best bassist in BP magazine, so obviously there are a lot of people that consider him pretty good. Do I consider him on the same level as Victor Wooten?  No.  Do I consider him on the same level as Ray Brown?  Of course not. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Very few lucky people make it to Victor Wooten, Flea, Ray Brown Status… > See, this is how out-of-touch I really am.  Flea and Ray Brown are on the > same level — I had no idea.  I gotta give a closer listen to this Flea cat > one of these days.

Response:

No, Wayne, I’m serious.  I hear a lot about Flea, but I wouldn’t know him if I heard him.  I know what he looks like, because he’s everywhere in bass mags these days, but I haven’t heard enough of his playing to know what kind of a player he is — so I’ll have to believe what I hear in this group.  Do you have a recommended song or album I should check out?

Music isn’t a contest, there’s room for everyone.

Good advice. My single nit-pick is that music CAN be a competition, such at auditions. However, even that situation is not always about who’s the "best" player (whatever that means). A lot of the time, it can be about who’s the best fit for the band (musically, personally, etc.). My 2
