FS: MVB (EUB) for Sale

Question:

Don’t give me any shit about this… I just don’t enjoy the EUB thing. I think I would have enjoyed a true acoustic upright more.  This would have been a keeper if it was a little louder acoustically.  That said… the boat just sucked out all my cash, and my car insurance is due.  My car insurance here in LA is over double what it was in WI.  Nuff said. My Merchant Vertical upright bass is for sale.  When I bought it, it was in solid condition, but had a LOT of wear.  The previous owner started to remove the original finish, I bought it, and completed the refinish. I put a lot of time and effort into the bass, and I think it shows.  It has a new Merchant end pin, new spirocores (wicht) ((sorry that’s not spelled correctly)), an updated Bout attachment. The headstock sticker needs to be replaced, and with the right buyer, and a little patience, I could be talked into replacing the sticker (already have the part). The action is low, it plays fine.  The fingerboard is fine, but very close scrutiny reveals some small amounts of string wear. Comes with the padded gig bag, the old end pin, and what ever else I have laying about. I’d like to get $1300.00 USD plus shipping and insurance.  I’ll only ship within the U.S.  Payment via personal check, cash or money order. Possible direct deposit for the right (known to me) buyer.  Shipping will be from zip code 70461. Thanks Joe.  It came out beautiful.  Even Bud said so when he saw it. Both he and I also agree it has a pretty acoustic resonance to it.  The body is a hollow box, and the spruce spring bars that the bridge sits on, seems to add to the lively feel of it.  The current models have piezos under each saddle.  No volume or tone controls on the bass, so it needs a good buffer to run it through.  More details here: http://www.merchantbass.com/ I don’t know about arco, but for pizz, it’s pretty cool.  Without the bout playing is o.k., I’ve tried it for a little, here and there.  Not sure, but I bet that after a while, you’d appreciate being able to rest against you’re belly with the bout.  Especially if you were playing pretty active lines, where you’re jumping around a lot. My friend works sound at a coffee shop open mic, so I dropped in last night.  There was a guy playing jazz box guitar, and a girl playing muted trumpet.  Pretty cool!  Going through the big Jazz Real book. Made me wish I had the EUB there with them :-) Tried to play it a few moments ago, but my hands are still covered with tiny blisters.  Too painful.  Tuesday, the dermatologist’s office will be open for appointments. —    O< "Hey, who’s da’ U-boat Captain?" /()    ^^                                                      Slidell, LA

Thanks for a good idea!!! And, to keep it sort of on topic for the original poster: You might want to consider just buying a cheap case at a music store – I picked up a new one for around $40 US, and it is perfectly adequate.  It doesn’t come with a power supply, but it’s easier than building one from scratch.

You’re welcome. Also, if some of your pedals are shorter than the others you can raise them up by using thicker plywood or even stacking layers of it so the tops of all the pedals wind up at the same height. Claude

Hi Here’s a good pro link http://www.ngmpedalboards.com great stuff. and a free tip. When wiring your pedals together, stay away from the on piece double male jack cranks……use short cables like George L’s.  With the one piece cranks everytime you step on one pedal, the other side is pushing into the adjacent pedal causing undue stress on the female jack.                                  Aloha, Jerry

There’s some good pedal board info at www.fulltone.com and www.pedalboard.com Here’s what I advise: #1 Use sticky back 3/4" Velcro.   #2 Cover a 1/4" to 3/8" piece of plywood in black carpet for your board. The grey/black carpet so much equipment is covered in, is called Ozite.  It may be available locally.  If not, I like www.tchweb.com. The carpet replaces the fuzzy side of the velcro pair.  Don’t buy the sew on velcro at a fabric store.  ACE/HD/Lowes carry the sticky back type. I prefer thin plywood to 3/4" because I use a wah and it feels weird if the board is > 3/8" – that’s just me.  Look in the scrap bin at HD or Lowes.  They gave me the piece I’m using now for free.  I use DAP Gel style contact cement to glue the carpet to the wood.  Do it outside with a mask on.  I use a putty knife instead of a brush.  A utility knife is good for trimming, etc.  If you don’t know how to do this, here’s your resource:  www.webervst.com, Bulletin Boards, Enclosures.

Ron http://www.bravewords.com/news.html?id=14029 BW&BK: "You mentioned that you’re a proud American and you’re proud of what the founding fathers achieved and the values they embraced. Do you think America still stands up for what the founding fathers proposed?" JS: "Yeah, I do. Does that mean we have not made mistakes? No, we have made mistakes. We’re human beings and we will make mistakes. But to this do I will stand rock solid by the fact that I know this country has done a hundred times more good for other countries around the world than anybody else ever has. And that’s just a fact. The facts speak for themselves. Are we perfect? Hell no. We’re human beings and we fuck up like everyone else does. But this is an experiment. And it’s an experiment that the founding fathers would be pretty damn happy that it’s worked as long as it has. Would everybody agree about everything that’s been done? No. That’s never going to happen. But we make mistakes and over all we try to make it right." BW&BK: "This next question is controversial so I’m letting you know before we proceed. Some political analysts have articulated the view that what happened on September 11 was justified due to America’s presence in the Middle East, specifically Saudi Arabia. Some political analysts view it as retaliation for what the US has done in the Middle East in the past. As a Canadian, I’m interested in hearing what you have to say about this view that’s been put forth by analysts." JS: "No, it wasn’t justified. Not at all. And anybody who says so needs to have their fuckin’ head examined." BW&BK: "Do you think 9/11 will be viewed as the first event in the US empire’s decline and fall?" JS: "No. This is not an empire, first of all. If the United States was an empire, your country would be our 51st state." BW&BK: "I understand." JS: "Let’s get real. We don’t do that. It’s not our thing. Colin Powell did an interview and the interviewer called the United States an empire and used this bullshit fuckin’ socialist language and his response was, ‘The only land we’ve ever asked for is enough for the kids who don’t come home. In all the countries we’ve gone and liberated as far back as WWII, the only land we’ve asked for is for our soldiers that died.’ There’s an over-whelming amount of jealousy and resentment out there. When you’re the leader, everyone comes to you when they need help. But then they shit on you every chance they get. You can never please everybody all the time. No matter what you do. You can try to do the best things, and no matter what someone is out to get you and tear you down. It’s in that way in any scale of leadership. I don’t care if it’s a personal thing or a country or a commander of a battalion. It’s human nature, it’s unfortunate. But it’s the way it is."

Did you know that the lead singer for Iced Earth is the one that the movie "Rock Star" was modeled after and how he came to sing for Judas Priest?  Have you heard the album "The Glorious Burden"?  It’s mostly about wars and conflicts … my personal favorite off of it is the song "When the Eagle Cries", but the one getting all the airplay is "The Reckoning (Don’t Tread On Me)".  That guy has one hell of a vocal range, and the music is unbelievably tight.  They are about the only metal band around that is really worth talking about anymore.  Them and the resurrection/reformation of Agent Steel.   http://launch.yahoo.com/artist/videos.asp?artistID=1012629     Whatever happened to the spirit of metal?  It just sucks these days … it’s mostly screaming and no singing anymore.  What happened to bands like Queensryche, Testament, and Savatage?  It’s really sad … Lostpup198 "The human race divides itself politically into those who want to be controlled, and those who have no such desire." — Robert A. Savatage was local here and I know / do work for a lot of the guys. Some of them are out solo and scrambling others did the Trans Siberian Orchestra (check out the Christmas tunes :) . It is really good to see guys actually singing. That was so completely abandoned in the 90s – you just had raps and screams. Anyway good stuff. Ron

Are you in Florida?  There’s your header … Tampa, huh?  My sister lives there.  I used to go see them when I was stationed in Orlando at a place called "The Point After" that’s somewhere east of Orly on 50, IIRC.  Is that place still there?  Or has it gone the way of many good rock clubs that prospered in the 80’s and 90’s? >Some of >them >are out solo and scrambling others did the Trans Siberian Orchestra (check >out >the Christmas tunes :) . >It is really good to see guys actually singing. Song Clips….critique perhaps?

Question:

My band Sojourner got some free studio time for loaning out our PA system to a guy we know who has a fairly nice home studio.  Basically we ended up with about 6 hours of time where we laid down 4 songs.  Two of them we spent a lot of time on because one was new and we recognized its recorded potential and another is a crowd favorite that we had to get as perfect as we could in the time we had.  So that means we had a lot of input on the mixing of those two because a lot of time went into it…those two songs are "Take Me Away" and "Untitled" at the link I’ll post below.  The one other song at that link called "Afterglow" and another we did were pretty much play through it, rough mix it, burn it to CD.  Of those two the one at the link came out best, but the mix is still far from where we’d like it.  So yeah, have at it…the good, the bad, the ugly.  Just keep in mind it’s 6 hours of studio time in a mediocre studio with 4 guys who have been a band for barely a year together and three of us out of those were together a year before that. http://www.sojourneronline.com/private They’re pretty much in the order of our amount of liking them, least to greatest, at the link…though we’re fairly satisfied with all three.  Just FYI, the first and last songs were recorded direct through my SansAmp Bass Driver DI on my Fender MIM Jazz…the second was direct with whatever eq and effects added post by the guy mixing it because he didn’t like the clickety-click I had going before with the presence and treble on the SansAmp.  On the last song that’s a Dunlop 105Q (or something like that) bass wah…the white one.  Also a little bit of a DOD 250 overdrive or something like that….can’t remember for sure because I just got it…yellow metal stompbox…I like it.  Anywhoo, rip ‘em apart. Brent P.S.  My first posting of clips!  heh  Be gentle…I don’t think I’m that great just yet, but I’m a less is more kinda guy.

Response:

I think your bass playing perfectly suits what this band seems to be trying to do. Oddly enough, I like the tone on the second tune better than the first. The third song doesn’t really seem to go anywhere. I realize you’ve got other tunes. I think I would have focused more on uptempo stuff. Keep up the good work …

Response:

I think it’s my intonation….I’ll even bet you’re talking about the intro to the first song.  Whether I just tuned or I’ve been playing a couple songs without doing it that G (the first note I play in that song…the one that sounds out of whack) it never seems to sound just right.  I could blame it on the guitarist, but he checks tuning before most every song (which I do as well now that I have a nice pedal tuner).  Anywhoo, any other takers? Brent

Great post, Brent, and great effort. At least you aren’t afraid to put yourself out there. Great also that you told the backstory behind the clips, instead of just posting them. Hope you can do that "Good Trade" again and get more time in that guy’s studio. I guess Steve, eh was on to something. Maybe you were caught up in the moment and forgot to check your tuning between songs.

Response:

Hi brent cool stuff !!!! i listened it without pay attention to the quality of the record; but more on the music and your playing. So i find you playing pretty cool, totally adjusted with the music. Not too much, not to less. nice sound too (i really should try a good DI) but first, the songs. And my favortie is the second, "untitled". I like this kind of atmosphere, i remains me by moments some U2’s working i love. "take me away" too. I like the third too but i find too long the transition between the two tempos. (my taste) if i had a thing to say, i could say that the guitarist sound lacks of clarity. i think it’s prejudiciable to his playing because it cut some subtilities  that i would like to hear better… The singer has a good voice. that say, i like your stuff. keep it up !!! basst

Duck Tape ?

Question:

Or is it Duct Tape ? I just bought a DVD of Mark King performing live (it’s a german collection called Ohne Filter). It’s quite OK, and Mark King just blowed my head off. Ever tried to follow the tempo on ‘Lessons In Love’ ? Anyway. He had his slapping thumb taped with this famous silver-looking tape. Does anyone of you know why ? better sound, protection ? TIA, — Henry! "Your shoes have got to match what colour guitar you’re playing. I had this black guitar and I was going, ‘Gem, I can’t seem to dress with this guitar’."

Response:

Maybe he had a blister underneath? Or he likes to tone better? Seems like it would be the opposite of a slapring.

Not a single second. But it’s just that you see this guy playing and you notice things. Something like ‘If I put some Duct tape around my thumb, I’ll be able to slap 10 times faster’. He always did that, the claims at the time were so he could get a sharper sound, but maybe it was protection too. Either way, the man was a monster.  He would not only slap like a demon, but sing *and* dance energetically around the stage in enormous doc marten boots all at the same time. Truly astonishing.  The recorded material didn’t do the live performance justice. I’m assuming he is still a monster, but I’ll wager he’s slowed down a little, if only on the bouncing around the stage front. — Derek — Many Hands   – Trans Cultural Music from Aotearoa/New Zealand http://www.manyhands.co.nz/

DUCT Tape was invented to cover any holes or leaks in heating/air conditioning duct work. Originally it was very thin steel with glue added to the underside and was metallic so that it would carry an electrical ground. Later for ease of use it became silver colored carpet tape type stuff. Several years ago someone started a company that manufactured this tape and called it "Duck Tape". Pt

Hide glue expands and contracts with the wood in the bass making it safer and easier to repair than white type glue or epoxies. Their instruments have probably gotten used to the climate, they probably have a yearly maintenance budget and they may dehumidify. If you’re in a hotel turning on the bathroom exhaust fan and air conditioning may help to dehumidify. jeffb

Hey all, During the refin on my EUB, I’ve sanded the neck probably 4 times. Three times, a few days after each sanding, I’ve noticed the glue between the fingerboard and the neck.  A slight ridge of glue keeps re-appearing.  It’s not soft and mushy, but pretty firm.  Some of it can be chipped off, but a light sanding works best.  What the hell?  Is this normal for a bass from Colorado to act in the deep south?  Humidity? —   O> /()                           ^^                                                      Slidell, LA

You know I’m no expert on uprights, all I can tell you is that it’s almost certainly animal hide glue holding that fingerboard on, and hide glue swells when it’s exposed to moisture.  When you mix the stuff up, you add water to the dry glue flakes, and it swells WAY up, making a kind of jelly.  So, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the glue under your board was swelling from the humidity in the air there.  I’d also guess it will have no ill effect at all.

Here in California, string bass students using school instruments were required to purchase humidifiers to combat the effects of mondo dry heat.  The officials didn’t want their instruments to dry out and crack.  If there is something that needs to be done for instruments in your climate, the folks who maintain a stable of them will be able to point you in the right direction. Behringher is usually also very good value for the money. It’s probably a little cheaper than the LA and has a little more watts, I disliked the tone of the LA series when I tried it, and ended up with a hartke kickback12 combo, now how should I put it, the bx1200 is VERY similar to to the kickback, 120watts, aluminum speaker, eq, "wedge"design, if it’s half as good as the hartke, your son is set to go, even when he start playing with a band. I own lots of behringer stuff, never had a problem with it, on the contrary, I’m very satisfied. I would say to buy at least something with 100 watts, the more the better. — Chris E-mail is fake, don’t you just hate spam…
