Need your opinions please

Question:

I am  a multimedia student at Emily Carr institute of Art and Design in my graduating year. I have chosen as my grad project to do a multimedia piece on the guitar in cd-rom format. The project will focus on several areas of the guitar such as it’s history, care and maintainence, Famous player and styles, and some basic music theory. The idea is basically a "coffee table cd-rom" visually rich and made to be somewhat of a collectors piece. I myself play regularily but I must admit that I represent a very biased view of guitar playing I am still stuck on Jimi Hendrix and SRV. So I need your opinions of what hot and what new. I have prepared some  questions that would really help me out. Please answer as many as you can and either email me your response or just post it to the news group. any response will be greatly appreciated even it it is just a brief comment. I Will try to provide some way of downloading my project to anyone who responds to this post if you wold like to see the finished result. here are the questions. 1. Do you think the the older guitar greats are still a viable resource for inspiration and technique? 2. Who do you percieve as the next Jimi Hendrix? 3. Do you think that guitar players will remain a viable expression in modern popular music? 4. What type of guitar do you play eg.  strat style, les paul, or floyd rose based guitar? 5. If you could only pick one, who is your favourite guitar? 6. Would you have any interest in a project such as this? 7. What would you like to see included in this project? 8. Have you seen anything like this before? and if so did you enjoy what you had seen and /or would you purchase it? Sincerly Warren Neily

no matter what… you’ll wind up playing chuck berry. >2. Who do you percieve as the next Jimi Hendrix? who gives a shit? >3. Do you think that guitar players will remain a viable expression in >modern popular music?

no. I think the guitar is a stupid instrument. It has no ability to convey human expression, visually or musically. It will be replaced by the zither. >4. What type of guitar do you play eg.  strat style, les paul, or floyd >rose based guitar?

f hole semi acoustic electric. >5. If you could only pick one, who is your favourite guitar?

who is my favorite guitar? bill. >6. Would you have any interest in a project such as this? exactly this much. >7. What would you like to see included in this project? an author. >8. Have you seen anything like this before? and if so did you enjoy what >you had seen and /or would you purchase it?

yes. yes. no. >Sincerly >Warren Neily

also ’sincerly’… TWANG! patrick f. coleman ps if this post is any indication of the care and thought you are putting into your project, I predict you’ll flunk.. unless of course you’re doing emily carr herself on the side.

I think they are a better resource for inspiration and technique than the newer ones. >2. Who do you percieve as the next Jimi Hendrix?

Jimi Hendrix, but only if you believe in reincarnation. >3. Do you think that guitar players will remain a viable expression in >modern popular music?

As long as there is rock, there will be guitar.  I can’t tell what the future holds, but the guitar cannot be duplicated by MIDI or anything else.  There are just too many variables in the way a person plays for a computer to be able to duplicate the sound. >4. What type of guitar do you play eg.  strat style, les paul, or floyd >rose based guitar? strat copy >5. If you could only pick one, who is your favourite guitar?

favorite guitar or guitarist?  either way, it would have to be the Gibson SG and Jimi Hendrix. >6. Would you have any interest in a project such as this?

I’d buy the finished CD if it didn’t cost to much. >7. What would you like to see included in this project?

Video clips to show how to do various techniques would be cool.  Also, to attract people who already know how to play, it should have stuff about guitars and guitarists that applies to everybody. >8. Have you seen anything like this before? and if so did you enjoy what >you had seen and /or would you purchase it?

I think there’s a CD-ROM that teaches you how to play guitar, but I already know how so I didn’t buy it and don’t intend to.   phirebug Note:I have written my email address backwards in an attempt to keep spam out of my mailbox.

>1. Do you think the the older guitar greats are still a viable resource >for inspiration and technique?

No, everyone has disowned the great talents of music and embraced Yoko Ono and shred metal. >2. Who do you percieve as the next Jimi Hendrix?

Nobody. Who do you think will be the next Groucho Marx? What cartoon character will replace Bullwinkle? >3. Do you think that guitar players will remain a viable expression in >modern popular music?

Only for the next millenium, by that time digital sampling will catch up and bands will show up with flight cases full of palmtop PC’s, instead of those awkward instruments. >4. What type of guitar do you play eg.  strat style, les paul, or floyd >rose based guitar?

Air guitar. And not very well. >5. If you could only pick one, who is your favourite guitar?

The last time I checked, guitars were inanimate objects. Don’t they teach you that in college? >6. Would you have any interest in a project such as this?

My rates for completing surveys start at $1000/hour.; And I work veeeeeerrrrryyyyy slow. Check’s in the mail, right? >7. What would you like to see included in this project?

Lots of money for the participants. Ned Carlson, Triode Electronics, Chicago, IL http://www.triodeel.com Open 12:30-8 PM CT, 12:30-5 PM CT Sat Closed Wed ph:773-871-7459 fax 773-871-7938 "where da tubes are"

Response:

1. Hell yes. 2. There is no next Jimi Hendrix, just like there is no next EVH, Jeff Beck, Les Paul, SRV. 3. Yes. Guitars are nearly unparalled in there ability to convey expression. Horns do an outstanding job, but can play only one note at a time. Only the human voice, in my opinion, can beat the guitar in terms of expression. 4. Les Paul 5. Les Paul…but Strats are cool too. 6. Me. 7. No.
