Question:
I have been playing bass for some time now, and have resisted using effects (and picks) at all costs, however, I just put together a new rig and started filling in with another band. I am doing more music that I am unfamilliar with, and it seems as though todays bassists are using more effects than ever. I still play the same as ever, but I want to keep up and do the best job that I can. if so, what do you suggest?" The band that I am filling in with is doing a lot of classic and alternative rock…..some new metal as well. I have an Ampeg SVT 4 Pro and a P-Bass. Thanks in advance, Steve. I am also looking into a Tobias or perhaps a Carvin bass.
Response:
I’ve just gotten turned on to using a little compression. It can tighten up your sound. If I were in your shoes, the only other thing I might look at would be a SansAmp bass driver. It can give you some light overdrive/distortion without loosing the low-end. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I have been playing bass for some time now, and have resisted using effects >(and picks) at all costs, however, I just put together a new rig and started >filling in with another band. I should add… The combination of Ampeg SVT 4 Pro and P-Bass are probably perfect for the kind of stuff your playing all by themselves though. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I’ve just gotten turned on to using a little compression. mean effects such as distortion and chorus. Are they useful ? It seems that you hear a little more "off the wall" stuff going on. I don’t wanna’ go crazy, and above all I don’t want to thin out my sound, but I am curious. Thanks again, Steve.

Personally, I absolutely love my Lovetone Meatball (envelope filter… VERY funky) and EBS Octabass. I also love funk, so both of those are used live, but I can’t afford a back-up for the meatball. Pat
