Question:
I’m looking for recommendations for a musician’s stool. The music stores in my area have them for customers to use when trying out equipment, but they don’t sell them. Where do you buy these things?

So you seek a stool sample. Roc N Soc makes some really nice ones. They’re not shitty at all! http://www.rocnsoc.com/products.html When I play drums, I happily park my hiney on my Roc N Soc Nitro series throne. Pneumatic height ajustment and a little bit of shock absorber action. A huge improvement over traditional round seats. http://www.rocnsoc.com/nitroseries.html Musician’s Friend sells em: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=02033119065512918818109355145… If you’re looking for a more traditional tall stool with a cushy seat, they make those too: http://www.rocnsoc.com/towerseats.html I haven’t seen these in stores myself, but I imagine they’re out there. I *knew* that was coming. Man, you know your stools, that’s for sure. Thanks!

Try IKEA – I got a folding stool with a back from IKEA (Canada). The fact that it is flat makes for easy storage and transportation.

I just went through an exhaustive search to find the kind of stool I wanted, and I still haven’t found one. My problem is I want one that sits high up (like a bar stool) so I don’t have to rest my bass on my knee. Also, I wanted one without a back on it. Seems the tallest they get is 30 inches unless you want to pay hundreds of dollars for a stool from a bar supply outlet. I eventually took my head off my 4×10 and sit on the cab (just in rehearsal, I jump around at gigs). If you want a smaller stool though, Wal Mart had a simple 29 inch wooden stool for about $30. Okay… let the jokes fly about 30 inch turds! "Try eating lots of bran muffins…" etc.

I think fender sells that kind of stool — the same ones the dealers have. Typical bar-stool height, Fender logo (I’ve also seen them with Guild and Squier logos on them). What about restaurant and bar supply places? There’s an awful lot of bar stools out there — they’ve got to be coming from somewhere.

I just saw a stool of that height in the musician’s friend catalog. Had an a-frame base. Didn’t look particularly comfy though. — /" ASCII Ribbon Campaign | Todd H / | http://www.toddh.net/ X Promoting good netiquette | http://triplethreatband.com/ / http://www.toddh.net/netiquette/ | "4 lines suffice."

What wrong with just using a drummer’s throne? http://www.noteworthymusic.net ** Change ".nospam" to ".com" to send an email

One would think so. The Fender stools are still a little short for me, although they’re pretty nice. The problem with most bar stools is they have a back on them, which I don’t want for fear it will get in the way. I just want a really tall, simple wood or metal stool. I’ve hit a few bar supply places online, and either the stools are too short, or they’re really elaborate and cost well over $100. I guess I’ll just sit on my cabinet for awhile… saves space in the basement anyway, and I can hear (feel) my bass better. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I think fender sells that kind of stool — the same ones the dealers have. > Typical bar-stool height, Fender logo (I’ve also seen them with Guild and > Squier logos on them). For a VERY cool stool: http://www.stokkeusa.com/move2.htm. This one is really awesome (though well over $100….) maarten

For me, a drummer’s throne would be too short. I want to be able to stretch my legs out as I’m sitting. That’s why a bar stool design is best, but finding the right one isn’t easy. One problem I have is that I don’t play the bass by resting it on my knee, even when I’m sitting on the couch just messing around with it. For some reason, with the bass on my knee, my right arm cramps up too much to play. I have to have my right arm extended a bit, so that means hanging the bass on my neck whenever I play. I don’t wear the bass real low, just a little lower than where it would be if it rested on my knee. Maybe if I forced myself, my right arm would eventually get used to that position. Don’t know.
Response:
The problem with a drummer’s throne is there’s no bar on which you can rest your foot. If you want to be up in the air some, which is what I like, then you need a place to rest your feet. The ideal stool has a foot-bar. There’s a place we play every now and then that has the most awesome bar stools — they are tall, have a perfectly-placed foot-bar, and the seat is big and square, about 20 inches square. Well-padded. Perfect. Gotta get me one of those.
