Yeah, my BF kinda just looked at me and smiled when I told him my plan to take a radio in the MRI with me. Then I remembered the first one, where i freaked out- I had to take all metal off – earrings, watch… duh!

Thank you! I’m going to take a couple 5 mg valiums – and definitely put something over my eyes this time, like a washcloth. The relaxation music sounds good too. I need to call and see if they have a tape player. tks again! kim

I’ve tried to avoid the reality of the MRI experience as much as possible – definitely DO NOT look into the tube! If you think you will have trouble keeping your eyes closed they can give you a washcloth to put over your eyes. Ask them if they can put you in with your head near the open end so that you can feel the light on your face. That also helps. Some of the newer machines like at Mayo Clinic at Jacksonville have lights at both ends so it’s a better feeling. Ask if they have a light they can shine near your head. Have a good fantasy? I always start with riding a horse on a beach and take it from there. Just keep concentrating on making a story in your mind and you will zone out. Works for me anyway. The first MRI I had, I didn’t know what to expect, I’m not claustrophobic, but I am curious. so I opened my eyes in there and PANICKED! They had to take me out, I was crying and hysterical. The tech said I could reschedule and come back another time. How did she think THAT was gonna help? If I’d left, I would have never gone back. I just knew that I HAD to do it and I HAD to do it right then. I told her to give me 5 minutes then put me back in. I asked myself that since I didn’t want to be there, in that machine, then where would I rather be? Hawaii was where I’d rather be, so when I went back in, I KEPT MY EYES CLOSED, very important! And I imagined myself on a beach in Hawaii, there was a bonfire and those Hawaiian guys in their little wrap thingys, and they were beating out ryhthym on hollow logs. When the ‘knocking’ started, it sounded just like my fantasy! The water was beautiful, the sand was warm, I had a great time in Hawaii! I’ve since had three more MRIs, one where I was in there for an hour and a half, and I actually looked forward to them because I enjoyed my ‘trip’ to the beach. The mind is a powerful thing! So, Kim, pick a place where you want to go, close your eyes, and go there. You’re going to do fine! Great post, Diane… very detailed and accurate. Your comments about having the technician talk to you make sense. Of course, when I first got an MRI of my knees, it was the first time for me and my technician spoke such poor English that I could hardly understand a word he said. He told me what was going to happen and said it would last about 5 minutes. Well, that was the longest five minutes of my life… thought I’d die. Of course, turns out I misunderstood him and it was supposed to be over an hour, and it was. They did offer me music… definitely get the music and have them turn it up. The noise of that machine is impossible, like being trapped in a dryer with someone hitting the outside with a hammer. Kim My 24 year old daughter that is disabled just had her second MRI in two weeks. The first one she had to have something by IV, and the one today was shorter so the gave her some valium and she did fine both times. Hi Kim, I read your earlier post, as well. I’ve had three of them done, but they were knees. I don’t think I had to go as far down the tube as you. Normally, I’m not claustrophobic, but I nearly made an exception on those occasions. My ex had a full-back series. Had to take valium to endure it. She did fine. I hope you do OK on this one!
