mostly OT: A guitarist with opinions

Question:

Who woulda thunk that guitar players have political opinions? Gee. Here’s the guitarist for Iced Earth i/v’d by the fanzine "Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles." Except that the words got a little braver than usual. No bloody knuckles except the mag is persona non grata at IE shows and events – seems the band didn’t like the edited version that was published. To its credit the mag published the whole thing online and here it is. Go read. A good time. If you’re into metal of an Iron Maiden-ish sort give them a listen. Ron http://www.bravewords.com/news.html?id=14029 BW&BK: "You mentioned that you’re a proud American and you’re proud of what the founding fathers achieved and the values they embraced. Do you think America still stands up for what the founding fathers proposed?" JS: "Yeah, I do. Does that mean we have not made mistakes? No, we have made mistakes. We’re human beings and we will make mistakes. But to this do I will stand rock solid by the fact that I know this country has done a hundred times more good for other countries around the world than anybody else ever has. And that’s just a fact. The facts speak for themselves. Are we perfect? Hell no. We’re human beings and we fuck up like everyone else does. But this is an experiment. And it’s an experiment that the founding fathers would be pretty damn happy that it’s worked as long as it has. Would everybody agree about everything that’s been done? No. That’s never going to happen. But we make mistakes and over all we try to make it right." BW&BK: "This next question is controversial so I’m letting you know before we proceed. Some political analysts have articulated the view that what happened on September 11 was justified due to America’s presence in the Middle East, specifically Saudi Arabia. Some political analysts view it as retaliation for what the US has done in the Middle East in the past. As a Canadian, I’m interested in hearing what you have to say about this view that’s been put forth by analysts." JS: "No, it wasn’t justified. Not at all. And anybody who says so needs to have their fuckin’ head examined." BW&BK: "Do you think 9/11 will be viewed as the first event in the US empire’s decline and fall?" JS: "No. This is not an empire, first of all. If the United States was an empire, your country would be our 51st state." BW&BK: "I understand." JS: "Let’s get real. We don’t do that. It’s not our thing. Colin Powell did an interview and the interviewer called the United States an empire and used this bullshit fuckin’ socialist language and his response was, ‘The only land we’ve ever asked for is enough for the kids who don’t come home. In all the countries we’ve gone and liberated as far back as WWII, the only land we’ve asked for is for our soldiers that died.’ There’s an over-whelming amount of jealousy and resentment out there. When you’re the leader, everyone comes to you when they need help. But then they shit on you every chance they get. You can never please everybody all the time. No matter what you do. You can try to do the best things, and no matter what someone is out to get you and tear you down. It’s in that way in any scale of leadership. I don’t care if it’s a personal thing or a country or a commander of a battalion. It’s human nature, it’s unfortunate. But it’s the way it is."

Did you know that the lead singer for Iced Earth is the one that the movie "Rock Star" was modeled after and how he came to sing for Judas Priest?  Have you heard the album "The Glorious Burden"?  It’s mostly about wars and conflicts … my personal favorite off of it is the song "When the Eagle Cries", but the one getting all the airplay is "The Reckoning (Don’t Tread On Me)".  That guy has one hell of a vocal range, and the music is unbelievably tight.  They are about the only metal band around that is really worth talking about anymore.  Them and the resurrection/reformation of Agent Steel.   http://launch.yahoo.com/artist/videos.asp?artistID=1012629     Whatever happened to the spirit of metal?  It just sucks these days … it’s mostly screaming and no singing anymore.  What happened to bands like Queensryche, Testament, and Savatage?  It’s really sad … Lostpup198 "The human race divides itself politically into those who want to be controlled, and those who have no such desire." — Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988)

I’ve only heard those cuts, the ones being pushed by the label. > That guy has one hell of a vocal range, and the music is unbelievably >tight.  They are about the only metal band around that is really worth talking >about anymore.  Them and the resurrection/reformation of Agent Steel.   >http://launch.yahoo.com/artist/videos.asp?artistID=1012629 >    Whatever happened to the spirit of metal?  It just sucks these days … >it’s mostly screaming and no singing anymore.  What happened to bands like >Queensryche, Testament, and Savatage?  It’s really sad …

Savatage was local here and I know / do work for a lot of the guys. Some of them are out solo and scrambling others did the Trans Siberian Orchestra (check out the Christmas tunes :) . It is really good to see guys actually singing. That was so completely abandoned in the 90s – you just had raps and screams. Anyway good stuff. Ron

I like Iced Earth…a lot. A FYI…the lead singer was the guy that used to sing with Judas Priest when they fired Rob Halford. — Jason http://www.geocities.com/nobody_upstairs

Are you in Florida?  There’s your header … Tampa, huh?  My sister lives there.  I used to go see them when I was stationed in Orlando at a place called "The Point After" that’s somewhere east of Orly on 50, IIRC.  Is that place still there?  Or has it gone the way of many good rock clubs that prospered in the 80’s and 90’s? >Some of >them >are out solo and scrambling others did the Trans Siberian Orchestra (check >out >the Christmas tunes :) . >It is really good to see guys actually singing. Sorry, don’t know it. Here in Tampa we can’t seem to keep clubs going. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Some of >them >are out solo and scrambling others did the Trans Siberian Orchestra (check >out >the Christmas tunes :) . >It is really good to see guys actually singing.
