Question:
Or is it Duct Tape ? I just bought a DVD of Mark King performing live (it’s a german collection called Ohne Filter). It’s quite OK, and Mark King just blowed my head off. Ever tried to follow the tempo on ‘Lessons In Love’ ? Anyway. He had his slapping thumb taped with this famous silver-looking tape. Does anyone of you know why ? better sound, protection ? TIA, — Henry! "Your shoes have got to match what colour guitar you’re playing. I had this black guitar and I was going, ‘Gem, I can’t seem to dress with this guitar’."
Response:
Maybe he had a blister underneath? Or he likes to tone better? Seems like it would be the opposite of a slapring.

I seem to remember that he was constantly fighting blisters. You blame him? cb

Response:
Not a single second. But it’s just that you see this guy playing and you notice things. Something like ‘If I put some Duct tape around my thumb, I’ll be able to slap 10 times faster’. I’ll give it a try at home. Just to see if there is a difference. — Henry! "Your shoes have got to match what colour guitar you’re playing. But which came first? The duct or the egg? — Many Hands – Trans Cultural Music from Aotearoa/New Zealand http://www.manyhands.co.nz/

He always did that, the claims at the time were so he could get a sharper sound, but maybe it was protection too. Either way, the man was a monster. He would not only slap like a demon, but sing *and* dance energetically around the stage in enormous doc marten boots all at the same time. Truly astonishing. The recorded material didn’t do the live performance justice. I’m assuming he is still a monster, but I’ll wager he’s slowed down a little, if only on the bouncing around the stage front. — Derek — Many Hands – Trans Cultural Music from Aotearoa/New Zealand http://www.manyhands.co.nz/

The DVD I have shows him a little clamed down, but only for the jumping around. And he wears Keds. He still can play like hell, and sing pretty good at the same time. — Henry! DUCT Tape was invented to cover any holes or leaks in heating/air conditioning duct work. Originally it was very thin steel with glue added to the underside and was metallic so that it would carry an electrical ground. Later for ease of use it became silver colored carpet tape type stuff. Several years ago someone started a company that manufactured this tape and called it "Duck Tape". Pt

I believe Duck Tape is but one trademarked brand of the many brands of duct tape that is available. I actually used duct tape for its intended purpose in sealing an air duct the other day. It’s good for that too, I assure y’all! — /" ASCII Ribbon Campaign | Todd H / | http://www.toddh.net/ X Promoting good netiquette | http://triplethreatband.com/ / http://www.toddh.net/netiquette/ | "4 lines suffice."
