Scott Colborn has suggested that to me that I post on my Bill Lawrence pickups, that I’ve recently installed in my MIJ Kramer Vanguard. The Kramer is a "sharkfin V" shape and has a bolt-on maple neck, rosewood fretboard, and Floyd Rose bridge. I don’t know what the body is made of, but it’s kinda heavy. This guitar came to me with a Duncan Invader in the bridge position, and what I think is a Schaller in the neck. When I first got this guitar, I liked it quite a bit, but I didn’t really have the chance to crank it. It was aggressive sounding, and a bit dark, but I figured that’s the Invader…dark and aggressive. The biggest problem is that when I tried to gig with it, it couldn’t handle the volume and gain at all. Both pickups were microphonic. I put the guitar away while I decided what I was going to do. After much internet research, I decided on Bill Lawrence pickups as replacements. I ordered an L-500XL humbucker for the bridge, since I use that the most, and could get by without the neck pickup if necessary. I received it in January, after nearly three months wait. I was getting pretty pissed at the wait, which I thought was four to six weeks, or six to eight weeks, depending on where my order fell in their production schedule. I tried contacting them for two weeks, and eventually got a response offering a refund if I didn’t want to wait any longer. I figured I’d waited this long, I’ll take the pickups. I mainly wanted to know I hadn’t been forgotten, I guess. For a while, I thought I might as well flush my cash down the commode. I was so blown away when I put that L-500XL in my guitar that I ordered one for the neck pickup that very day. It took about six weeks this time, and this time of course, there was no bitching about it. I knew I was getting quality, and I knew it was worth the wait, however long it was. Crispity crunchity! This guy knows how to make a pickup! It’s dynamic and responsive, with plenty of punch. There’s no loss of high end, and it’s still got loads of drive in the low end, but cleans up nicely with the volume rolled off. There’s nothing more fun than having a guitar that refuses to sound ugly or go out of tune, and that’s this Kramer. Scott did his damnedest when he put it through it’s paces a few weeks ago, and now he’s ready to go out and buy a whammy machine and equip it with BLs! I have to tell you it was a funny sight, seeing Scott, a guy in his early 50’s…a guy you expect to see with a Tele or Les Paul, shredding his brains out with a piece of black metal weaponry! I now have an L-500XL in the bridge, and it’s perfect mate, an L-500R in the neck position. That Kramer is currently my favorite guitar. That may change soon, as I have an Explorer on the way. It’ll depend on those Gibson pickups…Bill’s set a pretty high standard, and I wonder…are the Gibsons up to it? ~Rich See my gear at the link! http://community.webtv.net/one4rich/RichsGuitarPage

Thanks for the review. I’m watin on a set of 280s. You forgot to mention the nice price! Lloyd
I have the same compliment of pickups in my Epi and I love them. I also have L280s & a L290 in my strat and I love them as well. The waiting was kinda nerve racking, but now (knowing that they are upright people who shoot a straight deal) I would do it all over given the choice. To me, the quality is worth waiting for…however, the communication did leave something to be desired…I know what you mean when you say you were worried about "flushing your cash down the commode" I don’t like feeling like that either. I’ve gone through a several extended waits for music gear over the years. The gear I had to wait for that I’ve been happiest with is my VibroWorld built 2×12. Most of what I’ve had to wait for had obvious quality, but didn’t end up suiting my needs. So having to wait for gear hasn’t worked out all the well for me in most cases. And I hate waiting, so I haven’t given BL pickups a chance yet. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I was so blown away when I put that L-500XL in my guitar that I ordered >one for the neck pickup that very day. I mention this once in a while. The guitar that you’re holding has a huge impact on what you play. I think that your guitars have as much influence on how you play, as the musicians you listen to, or admire. >I now have an L-500XL in the bridge, and it’s perfect mate, an L-500R in >the neck position. I’ve had good luck with Gibson pickups so far. They tend to be very to work with. Not much edge though, which is why I think people tend to swap them out. They have good clarity though. With all these eye-poker guitars you’re getting, you need to get the other members of your band eye goggles now. Pete — Now you know why I used the qualifier "practically" –Bender

It’s kind of a sweet by-product, actually. I’ve switched sides, so that I’m on the singer’s left. That way, when he pisses me off, I can just sort of meander near him and he gets the top horn of that V right in the ribs! I was thinking pretty much the same thing while I was writing that. You could watch Ebay. There’s actually a lot of pickups on Ebay, because people have to buy them without first trying them in their own guitar. Sometimes people buy pickups because of someone else’s recommendation, or they’ll have heard the pickup in a different guitar, but then it turns out not to be such a good match for them, or their guitar. So, you have to figure that they pop up on Ebay sometimes. I haven’t looked for BL pickups there. Last PUs I was cruising Ebay for were DeArmond pickups. I stopped that search, because I decided that it wasn’t the sound I wanted. Pete — Now you know why I used the qualifier "practically" –Bender

Your idea of sharing is singular to say the least. You sure "give" a lot but, really, do you think anybody will take you seriously if you admit (or pretend) you don’t know *anything* but yourself? I mean, Skinny Puppy, OK, but Tom Waits? Depeche Mode? Next time you’re gonna tell us you don’t know about Deep Purple or Metallica. — (Remove the hyphen! Yeah, yeah, yeah, we’ve heard it before. You know, this stuff was pretty damned funny for a while, but the humor’s wearing kind of thin now. Whatever your artistic aspirations are, Jarl, your ’seriousness’ gets swallowed whole by the pretentiousness of your delusions, as evidenced by nearly everything you’ve ever presented in this ng. If you want to be taken seriously, there are better ways to do it than to be an irritant to people who genuinely aspire, unlike you, to more than just being the center of whatever kind of attention they can attract; whether it is good, bad or indifferent. As I tell my 15-year-old son, you should strive to be noticed for good reasons, not just any reason. As it currently stands, you are little more than a fool. Edward G. ‘It’s not a gang; it’s a club.’
Edward, I doubt Jarl really wants to be taken seriously. Don’t you think it’s just a huge joke ? Skinny Puppy were an industrial trio from Canada, not a metal band from Finland. Their name is a reference to their animal rights activism. They disbanded when their keyboard player Dwayne Goettel died in 1995. Multi-instrumentalist Cevin Key and vocalist Nivek Ogre have since gone on to other projects. In my opinion, Skinny Puppy were one of the greatest groups of all time. Todd Tamanend Clark Vocalist/Multi-Instrumentalist/Composer/Cultural Historian Primal Pulse Greene County, Pennsylvania

yes, but your telling me that there is melody, there are beautiful parts? i would have to say that you are difinately intellectualy contrived if that is the case. it’s not some philisophical fact that all music is good, just depends on the listener. you need to see reality for what it is: some music sucks, and is completely horrible, and there is no defense for the label when justified… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > You really think so? Well, it is a question suited to the philosophy of music theory. Whilst any form of rhythm or arrhythmic sound could qualify as music (and I have no doubt the proponents of this style would classify their creation as music) one would have to question what they are saying about the world. It is quite a nihilistic view. (please excuse this as a personal view. I am merely adding a perspective) I remember when my parents generation thought that Alice Cooper was quite extreme and his music was ‘not’ music. I found him humorous and enjoyed the jokes he made and the provocativeness of the lyrics (especially as his dress and presentation made my parents somewhat uncomfortable). I wasn’t and still am not of the opinion that he wanted us to see the world as a corrupt corpse. There is and was too much humour and self-mocking. With the lyrics I have seen of this group, it worries me only in as much as there appears to be no humour, as opposed to rather than cynicism, sarcasm and violent imagery (I have only what I have read to go on, I’ve have neither seen nor heard the group). I’m not of the belief that songs in themselves create or manufacture violence or self-destruction. They feed into those emotional states and are therefore sought out by people who feel that way. A very close, professionally successful psychologist friend, when hearing "Mother" by Pink Floyd, when it was first released, felt the song ’spoke’ to him – as these songs speak to others. If I had children who listened to these songs I would be concerned if they ’spoke’ to them, rather than that they found them as means to provide a way of ’shocking’ their parents, assisted them to individuate and where operating as phases of rebellion. Should they have a long term interest (and there was no humorous aspect) this would be more deeply concerning. TO say "European metal bands are more/less <insert trait here> than USA bands" is jumping into the generalization wagon again. Anyway, the problem with metal bands is skating on the edge between music and noise, and most of the bands cross the line. I dunno as far as USA death metal goes, im for cannibal corpse before Chris got fired and formed Six Feet Under, now I just listen to mostly Cradle Of Filth. Fucking gothics vamps who can play the black metal better than most and has a singer sounds like a spawn of a hell vampire unchained, Dani Filth’s lyrics are so deep, really gothic vampire poetry, enough to fill a good poem book. COF are a good change from the normal run of the mill black/death metal, some of COF songs are almost soundtracks to a horror movie. These guys are so talented its scary, almost unhuman. They also have cool tshirts designs that really has a meaning behind them, instead of let’s say Corpse Tomb Of Mulilated shirt (Two dead corpses eatting one another out) which is just their to shock people at the mall . Im not dissing corpse since im the guy that started this whole long thread about them by posting their tabs, but I just have to step in and say Cradle Of FIlth are better than Emporer even though both bands are very talented, but Emporer is overated and Cradle Of Filth are underated!

I don’t like Melvins or COC particulary. Don’t know Amorphis, didn’t like the 1-2 Death I’ve heard either, but maybe they were lesser efforts… > They’re more Sabbathy , grooving, and conplemplative than you might think.
Well, I don’t really want more Sabbathy bands either(except Trouble and maybe Candlemass), that sound is okay but it’s not a fave of mine either. I think Death is pretty cool. Although just screaming, the vocals are pretty damn wicked, and cool guitar solos. Check out Arch Enemy. You might want to try Death, Amorphis, Melvins, and Corrosion of Conformity. They’re more Sabbathy , grooving, and conplemplative than you might think.

This is cool, but you’ve got too many big names for a tour. It might work as a one-off, but I don’t think you can get the five bands at the top to go on a whole tour. The four doom bands are cool, but too many of them live could get kind of boring, even if it is good on CD. I don’t really like power metal, so I’d prefer not to see the middle four, but I see where they fit it. The older Sabbath fans have been fairly tolerant of Megadeth and Pantera opening for them, so I’d open it up a bit and include some thrash and death. I wouldn’t turn it into a (death)Metalfest, but maybe pick a few more melodic ones and try to appeal more to the mainstream metal crowd, without making it like past Ozzfests. Here’s what I think would be a good Sabbathfest: Black Sabbath Iron Maiden (might not be possible) Slayer Death Amorphis Meshuggah Machine Head (a good band, definitely metal, but recognizable, would open up those people that want to see Korn or what not) Second Stage: COC (Not sure if this is possible either) The Melvins Neurosis Nile Defleshed Some new band that’s somewhat melodic I think this is a realistic Sabbathfest, that’d oopen people up to some bands and types of music that they might not normally listen to. > But anyways, what do you all think? Hey all, just wanted to toss out some ideas about how *I* would like Ozzfest to be (i.e. which kinda bands etc.) Personally I think Ozzfest should be MORE of a metal show! And I mean METAL , sorry kiddis but that leaves shit like Limp Bizquit out. I think a good deal of long-time Sabbath and Ozzy fans like METAL much more than the hip-hop, rapcore, trendy "techno" etc. Don’t you? Sabbath is the band MOST important to Metal history by far, and Ozzy has carried the flag well solo as also. As with all Metal bands, they are MORE talented than _shitloads_ of lesser "rock" bands but they never got the respect they DESERVED IMO. Metal is dismissed by people (and I _honestly_ think that is generally because they are "scared" of it some way, shape, or form) Sabbath is one of the most important ROCK bands ever, hell ya got Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. And Sabbath _should_ be there RIGHT WITH THEM, but so many people don’t COUNT them, because "they are just a bunch of the Heavy Metal nonsense and noise, and it isn’t even music" Sabbath (and millions of their fans, who could give a fuck what the media SAYS they should like) has always proudly said FUCK YOU! to those morons. Now I think Sabbath and Ozzy, should KEEP SUPPORTING METAL, and not just the latest trendy, in many cases totally simple musicians with little talent! FUCK THE TRENDS! Out of all the "true" fans of Sabbath and Ozzy (as opposed who listen/go to their shows because it’s the "in" thing to be I’m sure most would prefer METAL or at least older hard rock (by bands that WERE considered Metal at the time) than crap like Coal Chamber. SUPPORT METAL! And with a show as big as Ozzfest, it would _introduce_ many younger people who might "think" Rammstein is metal and incredible musicians and composers, to REAL Metal and all of the joys it can bring! In my opinion (and in my, alas, probably pipe _dreams_ ) The Ozzfest would just blow everyone away, instead of showcasing less talented bands, and turn into Lollapaooza two, where all the trendy people flock there just to BE there, a fucking carnival with the music taking a back seat. And I’m sorry if I’m naive or something, but I _honestly_ think a metal festival with proven quality bands would draw as many people as one just playing the latest "fad" bands etc. So I’m just tossing out some suggestions of bands that *I* think would make for a truly unforgettable show that people would talk about for years, as opposed to Lollapalooza, (my sister and a few of their friends went to _that_ festival 4 years in a row, and NONE, repeat ZERO of them can name HALF of the bands that played, for even ONE year! That’s how memorable the music was at those, and they all even admit that the reason they went, the music was secondary. *I* would like a show that was ABOUT the music, not just used as background noise!) My "rules" for bands I select,: even though I like a lot of Death Metal and Black Metal, to me at Ozzfest they don’t _really_ fit in too well, so I’m excluding all bands from those genres. But even THEY fit in better than a lot of the bands that <barf!> sound like they might be on it _this_ year. I’m excluding all "trendy" bands that just are catering to the latest sound, instead of creating _art_ on their own for IT"S OWN FUCKING SAKE, and if people like it fine. Sell-out/poser band: One who plays/creates what they think the buying public will say "hey I like this". REAL band: One who plays/creates what THEY think is great art, and don’t change ANYTHING to more appease to mr./miss mall rat so they can buy them along with their baggy pants and doc martens. I’m also trying to exlclude (with obvious exception of Sabbath/Ozzy) bands who have played this before. Anyways I would mix a lot of older classic Heavy Metal (some of which might only be properly called hard rock in these days and times) with Newer Metal bands, but bands _somewhat_ close to the classic metal as well. Black Sabbath Deep Purple Iron Maiden Judas Priest Blue Oyster Cult Iced Earth Nevermore Blind Guardian Arch Enemy Moonspell Trouble My Dying Bride Anathema <the last two are two of the greatest Doom Metal bands in history for those who don’t know them. > Anyways just tossing out some ideas, obviously there are _literally_ thousands of metal bands out there, the VAST majority of which are more talented than all these "trendy" crap bands and ALL of which make TRUE ART! They are NOT putting out trendy stuff they know might make them so much money, they are making "non-trendy" music, simply for the love of MUSIC!! (quite the opposite wouldn’t you say than a band like Limp Bizcuit, with EXTREMELY limited technical musician abilities, and NO imaginative creative art processes at work, just trying to fool people long enough to fuck ‘em out of their money and sit back and laugh at them. It’s pretty sad, when a band like this with NO talent to speak of, simply becaue of Marketing. They PAYED radio stations to play thier shit music when it came out. And sadly many "sheep" blindly follow the "hot" bands on eMpTyV and top 40 radio, I mean "hey they are playing it all the time it _must_ be good!" But anyways, what do you all think? Do you like some of my picks to play? All of them? None of them? Who would be some bands YOU would like to see there? And do you all here wish it was more of a Metal festival, or do you _honestly_ prefer to see the "trendy" techno, rap/hip-core, and psuedo- shallow "hard" rock? HAIL METAL! Tony is gOd! But according to the "politically correct," metal bias the media has always had at different degrees through time, he get’s less repect from many than fuckers like TOWNSEND for fuck’s sake! IMO Sabbath, and Ozzy, should FIGHT for the metal flag, PROUDLY stand for substance over image, fads. etc. Please give some opinions people, all will be read, and appreciated whether you agree/disagree, or take it on a whole new tangent. ROCK ON!!

If it’s not too much trouble, could we add a similar thing to AOL? Anyone opposed to such a policy can just look at alt.horror and have their minds changed. ONE DAY A MORON CAME TO ME AND SAID "OZZY SUCKS" …SO I KILLED HIM
Without Black Sabbath Ozzy would not have had a solo career. I think his solo career is better sounding than the Black Sabbath with him but, the fact is that his gurtars learned there riffs from Tonys music and some other bands. He should be playing with Sabbath cause that is where it all started and cause he wanted to play with his friends again. I mean hey all the other musicians in the solo career for the most part are kids to him, not really a band. He spent whole decade with Bill, Tony, and Gezzer so wouldn’t you do the same?
I love the song Hand of Doom. Ever see the footage of them in 1970 performing in Paris? It is really good & would enjoy seeing them add it back to their set list someday even though I like his solo act more too.

Fair enough. I still disagree with you that Coal Chamber is a trendy band. I think there are a lot of people who listen to Limp Bizkit and Korn who don’t even know who they are. Looking back at some of my recent posts, I seem to come across as a much bigger Korn, CC, LB, Deftones, fan then I actually am. I don’t like most death metal or thrash. I don’t like any Iron Maiden album after LAD. I hardly consider most of them trendy though. There’s that arguement just completely shot down in flames… > Coal Chamber gets very little airplay on the radio and no MTV > play.
Very little? Try every hour or two, and then you’ll be right. Try seeing every high school metal fan you know walking around with Korn, Tool, Marilyn Manson, and CC written on their notebooks and backpacks, or wearing their band shirts. Nope, that sure isn’t trendy… > How are they "trendy?"
See above. Constant airplay, and worshipped along with the rest of the trendy bands. Popular until the next popular phase of music comes along. > Also, I have NO desire to see Oz do > anything even remotely close to black metal, and I doubt that anyone > else here does either.
I don’t care. If the music is well played, I don’t care if they sing about Satan, or evil, or suicide or whatever. Mercyful Fate is a damn fine band, and they’re black metal. In Flames, Sentenced, and a few others are good too. > Plisskin

I’m saying that he’s that talented that if he’s able to sing on a song with Busta Rhymes and make it sound good, he can pretty much do anything, considering that Busta Rhymes just plain out sucks. >Yes, maybe so. However, the bands he seems inclinded to tour with are >trendy bands as well.
Who says what is trendy? I’ve never seen CC or pantera on TV before. Just curious. And besides, Ozzy likes Limp Bizkit, they were his favorite band on the ozzfest ‘98. Don’t ask me why… ~Katie

Ah….I don’t know, Sabbath just doesn’t DO IT for me like Ozzy does… It’s hard to explain. I still love Sabbath, just prefer Ozzy solo more…always have. >Do you even remember when No Rest for the >Wicked or the Ultimate Sin came out?
I remember when Wicked came out, I wish I had been born earlier so I could have gotten into the scene back then and seen Ozzy in the 80’s. I was only 6 when TUS came out! lol. >If you want "upbeat" listen to >Stryper or Hanson
I don’t mean "faster"….but maybe more positive? No, thats not the word…I don’t know, when I’m in an awful mood, I pop in NMT and it just totally turns my mood around. Now, I put in, say HOD, and it just isn’t as exhilerating. I’m not trying to start an Ozzy vs. Sabbath war…I was just simply stating I prefer Ozzy to Sabbath. that’s all. ~Katie
Katie, I prefer Ozzy solo too but I don’t see it as more upbeat & not as gloomy myself. You can do a hell of a lot more than just bob your head up & down at a Black Sabbath show too, like oh I don’t know go fuking crazy or somthing. You are so young! Do you even remember when No Rest for the Wicked or the Ultimate Sin came out? If you want "upbeat" listen to Stryper or Hanson. Ozzy isn’t afraid of shadows & you shouldn’t be either. > Ozzy sucks with out Sabbath
Actually, he snorted without Sabbath. At least, he did until the 90’s. But if you mean career-wise, yes, Sabbath without Ozzy certainly went farther. Gloomy music doesn’t bother me, but I prefer faster stuff as well. After all, some people might consider Sentenced’s music gloomy, but it’s still fast paced. > I don’t see it as stooping. Yes, maybe so. However, the bands he seems inclinded to tour with are trendy bands as well. Korn, CC, Limp Bizkit, even Pantera. I prefer him to Sabbath as well, but I have to disagree on these points… > ~Katie

>I’ll meet you halfway. Ozzy is a lot BETTER with Sabbath!
I prefer Ozzy’s solo music way more than Sabbath. I don’t know, it’s just more upbeat, not so gloomy….I am far more into the music at Ozzy shows than I was at the Sabbath show. All you can really do is sorta move your head up and down, but at Ozzy conerts, I’m dancing all over the place. That’s just me though. ><it _really_ does make me sad to see him stoop down to the "trendy" >crowd though and perform with Coal Chamber, Busta, whatever.

Who else is able to? It’s shows Ozzy’s talent, that’s all. And about Coal Chamber, Ozzy & Sharon happen to like them a lot, on & off stage. First of all, I wasn’t responding to you. > I don’t like most death metal or thrash. I don’t like any Iron Maiden > album after LAD. I hardly consider most of them trendy though. There’s > that arguement just completely shot down in flames…
Not really, as again I wasn’t responding to one of your posts. > Coal Chamber gets very little airplay on the radio and no MTV > play. > Very little? Try every hour or two, and then you’ll be right. Try seeing > every high school metal fan you know walking around with Korn, Tool, > Marilyn Manson, and CC written on their notebooks and backpacks, or > wearing their band shirts. I don’t know where you’re from, but I stand by my original statement. Coal Chamber doesn’t have anywhere near the popularity of MM, Korn or Tool. I wouldn’t call Tool a trend either. I can’t think of any other bands that sound like them. And if kids are writing their names and logos on their backpacks and notebooks at your school, consider yourself lucky. Everyone at my school listened to Phish, Dave Mathews, and Bush. > How are they "trendy?" > See above. Constant airplay, and worshipped along with the rest of the > trendy bands. Popular until the next popular phase of music comes along.
Again, I can count the number times I’ve heard Coal Chamber on the radio on one hand. I wouldn’t really call them popular. > Also, I have NO desire to see Oz do > anything even remotely close to black metal, and I doubt that anyone > else here does either. > I don’t care. Other than Fate. I don’t know any of those bands so I can’t really judge. I hate King Diamond’s vocals, though I suppose Fate could do a great song w/ Oz on vocals. > Danny Shiflet > "I walk the earth, another day > The wicked one, that comes this way > Saviour to my own, devil to some > Mankind falls, something wicked comes"-Matthew Barlow, The Coming Curse

Seems to me when you don’t like something, that automatically makes it "trendy." Coal Chamber gets very little airplay on the radio and no MTV play. How are they "trendy?" Also, I have NO desire to see Oz do anything even remotely close to black metal, and I doubt that anyone else here does either. Plisskin
