Mulay would be a world class champion troll, second to none, if only he had good taste. His being tasteless and crass defeats his trolling, which otherwise would be effective.  But as it is, his tastelessness offends the very people he normally would have as followers, and with only very few exceptions, instead of gaining followers, he gains plonks.  Very strange. subtract where I hang at to unmunge feklar’s guitar playing: http://www.angelfire.com/empire2/kahless This will always take you to my ftp server if its up. Even with good taste, he’d have a long way to go to beat Jarl.  That guy had to be the most effective troll in Usenet history.  He took simple trolling and made a friggin’ *art* of it.  I’ve always maintained, if you’re gonna do something, do it well. ~kp

One thing Jarl had, even though he was a hardcore troll, is he had some restraint.  AND a sense of humor. Jarl’s music was classic too.  Although it fell more into the "torture" category than music.  I think that you can still download some of it, but I forget where.  I still don’t think I’ve made it all the way through one of his songs.  His music was like the bad trip that just wouldn’t end. But comparing Mulay to Jarl just isn’t fair to Jarl.  Jarl wasn’t all that offensive.  Only the people pretending to BE him were. Question:

Just got done reading the posts here. I feel like I will be scorned asking about staying on Cable Beach, Nassau for the Christmas week, but that is what I am looking at for the family of 4. Was on Paradise Island 20 years ago and had a good time. What about Cable Beach? Stuff to do?, crime?, stuff for early teens? Non-touristy eating establishments? Thanks for any Rick

Response:

I stayed at the Nassau Beach Hotel this summer with my two kids.  It was less expensive than the resort next door, but included priveleges at the hotel next door–including the casino.  My kids loved the beach–the resort next door (sorry, I didn’t pay much attention to it–it used to be called the Crystal Palace when I lived in Nassau  and may still be) had a water slide that they enjoyed.  There are a lot of places that the natives eat on Cable Beach–but unfortunately they are mostly American chains.  There is a Sbarro next door to the Nassau Beach Hotel, and a Dominoes in the nearby shopping center.  There is also KFC a short bit toward town. I rented a car, so I didn’t really hang out in the Cable Beach area that much–I like to eat from the take-aways over the hill and we spent most of our vacation visiting relatives and friends.  However, it turned out that the best place to go dancing that wasn’t touristy was downstairs at the Nassau Beach Hotel.   I went to a couple of interesting reggae dance halls over the hill, but there was a terrific Bahamian band (Sweet Emily) playing at the Nassau Beach and the DJ did a better mix of reggae, soca, and Bahamian music than you will find in the hardcore reggae dancehalls–and the crowd was primarily Bahamian!  Peanuts Taylor’s club with the limbo fire dancers is no more (and the public beach that is near the downtown area seems yucky due to the demolition/construction going on), but the King & Knights club is tucked between the Nassau Beach Hotel and the Crystal Palace and I think you may be able to take the kids there. By the way, when the Crystal Palace was first being built, I thought it was one of the ugliest places I had ever seen.  The sun has bleached the colors nicely, and it looks much better now.  My kids would have rather stayed there–but we were on a budget (I have usually stayed in guest houses or places that aren’t really licensed for tourists on previous trips, but wanted to stay somewhere nicer since I was travelling with an 11 and 14 year old.  The room had a small refrigerator, and there is a Winn-Dixie nearby. You can probably find places that have small kitchens (the Casuarinas is a small place on cable beach that (when I was there 20 years ago) has rooms you can walk directly out your patio door onto the beach and small kitchen areas, too, if you are more into that kind of thing.  The refrigerator at the Nassau Beach Hotel was a pleasant surprise and I never had any worries about crime (even though the hotel staff cautioned me not to let the kids wander around alone). Be sure you have a certified copy of your birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID OR passports.  My husband got stuck in Fort Lauderdale and did not enjoy the vacation nearly as much as the rest of us! We thought about going back at Christmas time–but my husband’s part of the trip was an unexpected expense, so we will probably have to wait until summer when the rates are much cheaper.  (which is a shame because we both have 2 weeks off at Christmas and I LOVE Junkanoo!!) Paradise Island sure has changed!  The Atlantis is overwhelming and their prices are extremely expensive for things like cokes and ice cream (no wonder the room rates seem reasonable for such a plush resort).  There is definitely lots to see and do at Atlantis, though–but I prefer Cable Beach cause I don’t have to pay to go over the bridge and I do like to spend a lot of time away from the hotel)

town) that take you to the front of the straw market and you can walk around. There is even water taxi to take you to Paradise Island Atlantis. Atlantis is an overpriced, overhyped piece of cement structure in the island. The place is full of morons with money who go there to spend it. Everything cost you an arm and a leg and the service or food is no better than average. If you are a fat cat, go ahead and trow your money away with the other monkeys. For real people Cable BEach is fine. If you are a diver stay a cable beach and dive with Stuart’s Cove or Dive Dive Dive. They pick you up at the hotel. The beach at cable beach is the best in the Island. Some locals will try to haggle you by attempting to sell you jet ski  rides or local jewerly. But no one is forcing you. The beach is warm and beautiful…..some local snorkling trips could be arranged. PArasailing is also available. In short I did not mine staying at Cable Beach and would go again if the opportunity arises. BTW I stayed at the Crystal Palace NOW known as the Wyndham. I returned from Nassau and Paradise Island two months ago. I guess that the Ministry of Tourism is publishing false advertisements. And journalist should not repeat only what they have seen on controlled courtesy trips. Some journalists visited Nassau, Paradise Island and Andros last some. Did anybody read a story published after July 2003 in any magazine? I would be interested in knowing what was published to be able to compare it with my experiences: Bahamas Consult published recently a second website about nassau and Paradise Island: www.nassau-paradiseisland.net.tc Some comments are published also at www.bahamasforum.net.tc — Posted via http://britishexpats.com

Hi folks Anyone got the 5 DVD Stones release called "Just For The Record"? Looking at it in music store today, but wasn’t sure whether it was all talk or all music or what? Victims of the plane crash and Lowell George died within a few hundred yards of each other.  The plane crashed on the VA side of one spans the 14th street bridge.  Lowell died at the Twin Bridges Marriott, pretty much a literal stones throw from the same spot.  Much closer than "roughly the same city" though separated by 18 months or so (maybe 30 months?).  Lowell died in the summer of ‘79 IIRC.  I think the plane crash was winter of ‘80 or ‘81.  The Twin Bridges Marriott has since been torn down. -Scott McKnight

I guess they couldn’t live with having had Lowell die there.  ’79 sounds like what I read recently.  Hard to believe it was that long ago though.  Damn, that was half my lifetime.  I thought I was older than that when he died. Pete

I think it’s more like – they had a bunch of newer Marriotts within a few miles of there and this was one of the very first Marriott hotels, and as such was kind of old and run down.  So they opted to raze the place.   >  ’79 sounds like what I read recently.  Hard to believe it was that long >ago though.  Damn, that was half my lifetime.  I thought I was older >than that when he died.

Yeah, I was 21.  I had just broken up with a girlfriend after being together for 2 years.  We had listened to a lot of Little Feat together.  I called her up for some reason and she was playing L.F. in the background and told me it was "in memorium."  That’s how I found out and that’s how I remember the year.   -Scott McKnight

I don’t remember finding out by now.  It’s just too long ago by now. I used to listen to "Feats Don’t Fail Me Now" a lot on the drive to work that took over an hour in a kamikaze little French car.  The car had a cassette deck that I had installed under the seat, and it would play both sides of the cassette, and I had taped it on both sides.  It made the drive seem a lot shorter. Pete

Response:

I really didn’t get into Little Feat until the 80’s, although I heard them played a few times by a die hard feat fan friend, circa 79/80 I was finally hooked in the mid – late 80’s and bought all the music I could find, and started learning the trivia as practical.  Seems Billy Payne played on the Doobie Brothers China Grove and their relationship with other famous people, ie Bonnie Raitt and other SoCal folks. Late 80’s I saw (and won tickets too) a small show at the Caberet in San Jose featuring Little Feat.  They were doing some water testing to see how a comeback might work.  The place was packed, they added Fred Tacket and Craig Fuller into the band and the show was just magic.  They announced on that night the Let It Roll Album debut and the rest of course is history.   People were crying to see them play it meant so much.  I had a chance to catch them a few more times and actually meet them, was real nice and they are nice folks.  Some of the members are on line, Paul and Fred quite a bit.  Paul has given me some slide guitar setup equipment hints (hold the mxr dyna comp close to your heart) in Emails. The band has changed quite a bit, but they are still around and playing, Craig went back into the woodwork and their backup singer (gal) steps up to sing a lot.  It’s changed a lot from Lowells’ style, but they are still great to hear. cheers skipp http://sonic.ucdavis.edu : I used to listen to "Feats Don’t Fail Me Now" a lot on the drive to : work that took over an hour in a kamikaze little French car.  The car : had a cassette deck that I had installed under the seat, and it would : play both sides of the cassette, and I had taped it on both sides.  It : made the drive seem a lot shorter. : Pete

So…was it …just… the location? …. I remember the Air Florida, at school…went to my buddy’s place to watch syndicated M*A*S*H…they were showing this wreck, and I was like…hey, that’s the 14th street bridge….sucked. So re: LGs death, although I believe I was home at the time…IIRC he had just played a show at Merriwether Post in Md.?  Maybe even a non-Feat show?  Don’t recall exactly, but that sucked too.  That’s what threw me off on the triv, because I thought I had a chance to go to that show, but I know I was at school for the AF wreck (winter, of course, icing and all being the cause)… Maryland was a huge LF fan area…much more so than Va. They were well liked in Va, but Md…they were like a super-group…for lack of a better term.

Yes.  Both events happened at the VA side of the 14th St. Bridge. Lowell George died in ‘79.  Air Florida was ‘82 (I just looked it up). >I remember the Air Florida, at school…went to my buddy’s place >to watch syndicated M*A*S*H…they were showing this wreck, and >I was like…hey, that’s the 14th street bridge….sucked. >So re: LGs death, although I believe I was home at the time…IIRC >he had just played a show at Merriwether Post in Md.?  Maybe even >a non-Feat show?  Don’t recall exactly, but that sucked too.  That’s what >threw me off on the triv, because I thought I had a chance to go to that >show, but I know I was at school for the AF wreck (winter, of course, >icing and all being the cause)…

IIRC, Little Feat was in town for a Merriwhether show.  Pretty sure Lowell died after the show but I could be wrong there.   >Maryland was a huge LF fan area…much more so than Va. They were >well liked in Va, but Md…they were like a super-group…for lack of a >better term.

Hmmm, I think it was the entire DC metro area – largely due to the folks at WHFS who more or less "broke" Little Feat in DC.  I was in VA and I knew plenty of hardcore fans. -Scott McKnight

He used ta hang with Little Feat and Bonnie Raitt. Also Catfish Hodge(back locally) nails that Lowell George chorused guitar sound ( think "All That You Dream" intro.) that was in my mind, a Lowell George/ Live Little Feat Trademark.

An LG show (vs Little Feat) or am I wrong? >Maryland was a huge LF fan area…much more so than Va. Could have had something to do with HFS signal coverage…NoVa was mostly served by DC101 and two or so other conventional rock stations.  LF did not get a lot of play, but we knew who they were, etc. In my group of vandals, in ‘79 it was still Zep, Aero, Foreigner, Meatwood Flac Cream, TYA, Stones…etc..etc..at that time.  Not for long.

Tuba too.  More recently he was working at a songwriters camp in upstate NY that a friend of mine went to.  As part of this he helped record demos with the campers, including my friend.   The Freebo/Feat connection I make is that Bill Payne was playing with Bonnie at the same time Freebo was.  For the _Centerfield_ album, I believe, maybe more. -Scott McKnight – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Pete

Yes, I agree about the WHFS signal coverage, though I think WHFS and DC101 had roughly the same coverage – I’m sure there were plenty of DC101 fans in MD and I can assure you there were plenty of ‘HFS listeners in NoVa. -Scott McKnight >In my group of vandals, in ‘79 it was still Zep, Aero, Foreigner, Meatwood Flac >Cream, TYA, Stones…etc..etc..at that time.  Not for long.

My friends were already way into punk/new wave by then.  Summer of ‘79 *I* was just emerging from a sort of exile from the cutting edge of music – caused by immersion in the relationship I mentioned earlier, plus a big college (NoVaCoCo) workload and part time job. Oh, I am *way* younger than you. 1977. And by that time, I was into the next stuff too. Went to school in Athens, so it was obvious at that point. I remember bringing home B52s and Devo  in ‘78 and having the typical stoner session listening to tunes and drinking beer…etc… My friends looked at me like I was crazy when I put the B52s on, but they came around real quick. I was also an early follower of Sex Pistols and Clash …which I turned the same folks on to…maybe late ‘77. Everybody was ready for a change, back then, whether they immediately realized it or not. BTW…DC101’s signal was much, much stronger than HFSs back then in my neck of *woods*.  HFS faded, and with the drift of analog receivers, was a bit of a pain in the ass. Not that I didn’t listen, but hey. Partying being what it was…. I did some time at NoVa.  Contrary to pop belief, there was an excellent selection of beautiful girls there at that time. (1979)….back to real school after the financial respite.

Annandale. Just core, logic, accounting, philosophy something or another. Never took music classes there…just played a lot of piano, and went partially crazy trying to figure out Van Halen on acoustic. It wasn’t a party school, but there were some great babes there at the time. I get their catalog…they have some good stuff these days…price is right…I may sample.

I like a lot of what the Stones have done.  Have they released any studio albums since "Steel Wheels"?  I didn’t care for that one, but I’d rather see them release something I don’t like all that much than see them turn into a Beach Boys like nostalgia spoof of themselves. I think they’ve figured out how to still be a band even during the long periods of time when they no longer appear to be together.  So for a band that got tagged "bad boys" right from the start, they’re actually pretty sharp. There’s a band that even rode out the Disco era, and instead of getting beat by it, they threw out some dance songs that were somewhat successful as I recall.  And you listen to albums from that era, when I think many hardcore Stones fans despised them the most, and they sounded like they were having a blast playing that stuff. I’ve got a lot more respect for them than I do for most of the bands that didn’t manage to survive for one reason or another. Pete

Response:

The Stones have "staying power" they make music, their styles change to refelct the times yet they remain the same ie some girls,  was a good club dance tune that could get play in a disco, or an old time stone fans would like it.  The hardcore fans cant hate the "un stonelike " music because its the boys playing it, yep they do look and sound like they are having fun they do what they do best rock & roll. They put on a great show thourgh i doubt ill spend 300$ to go see them, I heard thats what tix are going for in giant stadium (field level) maybe ill go for a nosebleed, and try to work my way down well see. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I can remember when mick once said "I dont want to be doing >satisfaction when im 40 yrs old"  and someone brought it up to him at >a news confrence, his reply "that was a low one" >I  am a huge stones fan, and they still rock my socks off. >Steve L. >I like a lot of what the Stones have done.  Have they released any >studio albums since "Steel Wheels"?  I didn’t care for that one, but >I’d rather see them release something I don’t like all that much than >see them turn into a Beach Boys like nostalgia spoof of themselves. >I think they’ve figured out how to still be a band even during the >long periods of time when they no longer appear to be together.  So >for a band that got tagged "bad boys" right from the start, they’re >actually pretty sharp. >There’s a band that even rode out the Disco era, and instead of >getting beat by it, they threw out some dance songs that were somewhat >successful as I recall.  And you listen to albums from that era, when >I think many hardcore Stones fans despised them the most, and they >sounded like they were having a blast playing that stuff. >I’ve got a lot more respect for them than I do for most of the bands >that didn’t manage to survive for one reason or another. >Pete

It’s not true at all.  She might not be the guitar player she’d like to be, but I doubt that being a good guitar player was ever one of the goals in her life.  But I’d like to see the rest of that conversation since this appears to be a comment taken way out of context. Bonnie Raitt plays guitar, no doubt about it,  and she’s got a great sound.  She’s got a certain signature to her sound that most guys would kill for.  Sort of Lowell Georgish the way there’s nothing else like it. I recall an interview with Chrissie back in the early Pretenders days in which she commented that her playing wasn’t as good as Honeyman’s, but she must not be too bad or those guys wouldn’t let her plug in! I find it a little hard to believe that Chrissie would say that; unless your quote is out of context. — Gary Gerhart www.GerhartAmps.com

Response:

Maybe she should see Jennifer Batten, who now plays with Jeff Beck….she

Response:

I can’t think of a woman hardcore rock’n'nroller that impressed me, to be honest (Please don’t say Lita Ford, *choke*) but for blues, acoustic,, light rock, I  believe that Bonnie Raitt and Nancy Wilson of Heart are among the best. — Cybrchndriac

|Chrissie Hynde’s comments: women can’t play guitar!  How true is this? ??? Where did you come up with this?  She sure can.

Response:

> Maybe she should see Jennifer Batten, who now plays with Jeff Beck….she

Absolutely.  She is great. She toured with Michael Jackson on the Thriller tour, IIRC, playing EVH’s licks, FWIW. With Jeff Beck, she takes a back seat, about half rhythm, and about half playing guitar synth (like keyboardy stuff). When I saw him last, she did get some leads and trade-offs with Beck. I really doubt, at this point, she needs to prove whether she can play. She can tear it up silly. Batten aside, you got your Bonnie Raitt, Joan Jett, Chrissie Hynde (pure rhythm player)…etc….but there are a lot of good girl guitar players. Whether they are popularly considered great guitar players has more to do with the nature of pop music, and how many girls choose guitar. I believe we are talking about a cultural thing here, not a sex thing.

Response:

It does seem to be pretty much male dominated.

one of the best things about hardcore(/ and /-/)punk is that aptitude and technique dont really matter. sloppy four chord songs can be awesome if they give off the right energy, emotion, and attitude (depending on tastes of course). skill can be an added bonus in some cases. a really good bassist whose work stands out is jason black of hot water music. check out fuel for the hate game as a point of reference. — ben
