Punk Jazz by Weather Report/Jaco!! No offense, but I wholeheartedly disagree.  Aim for the stars, and if you don’t quite hit them you’ll AT LEAST be able to pull of some Victor Wooten licks.  :) No really.  Of course you have to learn with baby steps, but that doesn’t mean that your highest aspirations aren’t that high.  Some of the earlier lines I remember picking out of the tapes were Higher Ground (Chili Peppers version), and Please Don’t Go bass solo (Violent Femmes). If you have a bass hero, don’t set your sites on him/her.. set your sites BEYOND him or her.  WAY beyond if you want.  I’m serious about this folks. You’d be suprised at how much you’ll limit yourself before you even start by shooting too low. Chiche, I know, but true. >Try to familarize yourself with the scales, it is a really good idea >as a beginner to get that under your belt, it will help you improve much >quicker

This may work for some people, but not all.  While learning scales is GREAT for your playing (once it trickles down that far), I played for a long time before starting to learn them.  Why?  I simply wouldn’t have been interested in learning them when i was beginning.  I spent the first 5 years playing by ear off records and developing my right (pluck/slap) hand technique. However, if you have the drive and motivation to learn them right off the bat, go for it!  You can’t go wrong there! Jordan Marr Eli’s Porch Winston-Salem

I’m gettin a Fender Standard J-Bass for Christmas, and was wondering what are some nice easy songs to start with.  I like punk/heavy/alt/pop music.  What are some current songs with easy bass lines that I can try out?  Also, what do you think of the guitar?  Anything I should look for instead? — Matt Wheeler

Get an Ibanez, it is my belief and has been for a long time that Fender charge way too much for the lower range guitars, basically cos it has FENDER on it.  For lower range guitars i don’t think you can go by a cheap Ibanez. They sound just as good as the fenders and with the money you save you can have more money to spend on an amp, pedals and in the near future new strings. As far as songs go, try Nirvana, easy as anything, as too are most Everclear songs, but they still sound pretty cool when you got a drummer and guitarist to jam with. Don’t aim to high, becos you will honestly be disappointed, it takes practise and time to progress, but the more you practise the quicker it comes. Try to familarize yourself with the scales, it is a really good idea as a beginner to get that under your belt, it will help you improve much quicker Garth
