We just picked up the Rory Gallagher Live at Montreux DVD set, what an amazing talent, and according to everyone I know who ever met him he was the nicest guy alive, absolutely zero show-biz in the man. I only got to see him live a couple of times, but I remember him stealing the show on a triple-bill with Fleetwood Mac and Deep Purple, no easy thing to do! Damn shame he died so young.
Rory Gallagher – A Million Miles Away http://youtube.com/watch?v=IE9pbvr2vxM&search=rory%20Gallagher One of my favorite Rory Gallagher songs. From the Tattoo album, which was the first Rory Gallagher Lp I ever got, and still my favorite. Pete

For years that was the only Rory Gallagher song I’d ever heard, and I thought it was called, "When Did You Ever?" They used to play it all the time on late night radio in Augusta when they had a kind of rogue station run by local rock freaks.
If there was anything close to justice in everyday human affairs, Rory would have taken the place of Eric Clapton in the public’s mind sometime in the early to mid 70s. While Clapton abandoned us to chase something he couldn’t seem to find (and wasn’t very exciting musically AT ALL), Rory just kept on making screaming good music that blows me away. He wasn’t Eric, and he wasn’t Peter Green. But he was incredible, and he never abandoned his fan base, either.

Rory had a pretty good bag of tricks. A lot of it’s being taught by now, but I doubt that most people know that Rory did this stuff decades ago. Nobody around me was even aware of Rory. When I’d bring him up, I’d get this…… "WHO???" thing all the time. But they’d all heard of Clapton. Guess I hung with the wrong crowd. Pete

Folks like him..Mick Ronson, and the like shammed us kidds into dismay. I just couldn’t believe anyone could do it so easy..so effort-less. SRV too, I was never really into his music, ditto Jimi, but ya had to drool at the pure flocking TALENT they had. Ron Wood too. Way back when, man he had it. Still does. I think back on all the ’stars’ I met over the years (a book in the works,maybe..?) and every one I ever met (3 Beatles too..hey Ringo, let’s do lunch!) was just a kool dude. Some sucked (ELP n a 3-pu LP Lake stole) yet others (selling Zappa the GMT amp on the Roxy cover) made it all worth while. RD (Who fame, HInn, Cambridge) & S/Comf as he bought the 12string EKO/RuDell axe, that Zappa said sucked raw. The day the Who were set to play 2 nights at the Boston Garden, some sport thingie ruined it, and they played 5 nights at the Boston Music Hall. I was there..stacking Sunn Col PA shit with Pete, Alan, and Ox. We drank all night afterwards. I know someone took pix, but I ain’t got any. Standing behind the Hiwatt stack and Ox’s Sunn. Orgasm. Ask ANYONE who has been lucky enough to have the chance to be in a place. I was pure fucking blessed. And that was even B4 I loved Jesus.. I got to get up and move about. But I’ll be back… JJT ….ok, I got a few emails telling me how full of shit someone thinks I am. I’ll just say, that I don’t care. I have the history, and can back it up. If those folks think it’s BS, then that is YOUR red-wagon. I’m an old fart that lived a blessed life where you kids now wanted to be, if you were not "..Born Late.." I found old Merson paper, when for $5k I became *THE* Marshall dealer, yet I had to buy Univox, paper from GMT/GK when I slep’ed their wares (great shit) by BUS all over the nothe-east. Wanna Talk Fritz-tronics. I still own the scars.. "When you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all.."

Almost every musician covers some songs. It’d be hard to name the ones who don’t. Not playing any covers just isn’t very realistic for one thing, and it’s also not paying the people who influenced you their due respect. And IMO, musicians who don’t do any covers are as boring as musicians who copy songs to the T. The ones who don’t do any covers are too self indulgient to be bothered with, and the ones that copy songs to the T are too mechanical. Neither one is worth my time. Pete — One egg left? Born To Be Wild. Love Steppenwolf and love their version. Hope I never have to play that song again. I actually played in a band once whose motto was "songs you don’t know by people you do". Our entire setlist was covers of the really good songs on the albums that you knew from owning the album but the song didn’t get beat to death by radio. Instead of "Cat Scratch Fever" by Ted Nugent we played "Need You Bad". Instead of "The Stroke" or "Everybody Wants You" by Billy Squier we played "Whadda You Want From Me" and so on. It worked great and went over really well. That was my favorite band to play in of all the gigs I’ve ever had. Peter

one of my bands did the kylie minogue cover of ‘cant get you out of my head – but a ROCK version! Pretty funny! check out the mp3 at www.sexbeatrecords.com/fink Another band I am in did ‘I ran’ by flock of seagulls (LOL) – but a glam/goth version www.thedeadthings.com We also play ‘look what the cat dragged in’ by poison, and ‘is that you’ by kiss, but much MUCH heavier & a bit faster. But yeah, total cover bands shit me as for so many years original bands had to fight for gigs due to cover bands riding coat tails and hogging up the circuits. Which in my opinion just aint right. I really wouldn’t want to be in a band that *only* played covers. I’d have to think about what songs I’d like to cover for a while, because I haven’t felt like being in a band for years. I don’t find them to be a very good use of my time. It would be easier to name songs that I *don’t* want to cover. For example, I would quit any band who insisted on covering "Layla". Seriously. I’d be out the door in a minute. But off that same album, I’d love to cover songs like "I Looked Away" or "Bell Bottom Blues" or "Key to the Highway". Same with "Smoke on the Water" (and fire in the sky). I wouldn’t tolerate that song. But I’d love to do "Maybe I’m a Leo". I also can’t stand "Freebird"! (You know, it’s a very long song –DriveBy Truckers). But I’d like to cover "Gimme Back my Bullets" or "Gimme Three Steps" or "I Know a Little". But there’d be the danger that by playing only songs that I’d wanted to play, there wouldn’t be enough of the audience who’d appreciate them. And I stopped listening to the radio for music a long time ago, so I don’t even know what people listen to these days. IMO, you can’t play music for the musicians in your audience. They’re the ones that sit on their hands at the end of the songs, and the whole time they’re listening, they’ll be thinking "I would have played that better". I don’t like the idea of catering to the musicians in the audience. Pete — One egg left? For a nutritious breakfast, two eggs is the minimum requirement! And I have but one, which is one shy of two! no – I agree with that PMG! But the thread is about BAD predictable and frankly totally annoying covers that stereotypical ‘cover bands’ or bad buskers who have the latest ‘1000 buskers favourite’s song book would play.
Every band I have been in has been an original one but always have 1 or 2 covers in the set – done our own way tho’. Yeah it’s fun.

I don’t think he was saying that he didn’t want to write any music. I think he was saying that not playing any covers isn’t realistic. Even big name acts cover songs from time to time. Just about every show I’ve been to with big name acts they have played a cover or 2 in their set. It kind of helps you connect with the band and see where they came from. This is a list of covers from the last few big name acts I’ve been to: Incubus : De Do Do Do De Da Da Da – the Police 3 doors down : some skynard song, can’t remember which one though Matchbox 20 : Changes – Bowie Fuel : Mary Jane’s Last Dance – Tom Petty

Hit me with a pork chop! For me it’d have to be Takin’ Care of Business. The Repair Guy http://repairguy1993.netfirms.com/
I have been in many cover bands through the decades. The biggest problem with all of the bands has been choosing the songs. Who chooses them? Even after almost 40 years of playing in bands things do not change. If you have a front person/singer they should choose the songs they want to sing. But the bass player doesn’t like the song so we don’t do it. Or the drummer can’t grasp it and on and on. One of the bands I am in now shares the songs. None of us are good singers but we can each sing a few songs OK. There are 4 of us and we each sing lead on 10 songs. We sound as good as most cover bands and since we all are singing there are no problems with song choices. We choose our 10 songs and learn the other songs. And we all sing backup and harmony. But still…..I’m a guitar player…I ain’t no singer. Gotta do what ya gotta do. Pt

Stairway to Heaven Freebirds a close second, but there are actually times when I like doing it. Perhaps in memory of the dead? Most people don’t realize that all the guitar solo parts are played by one person, not three, Allen Collins. RIP. Talk about selling your soul to the devil, think those guys paid enough of a price? Hi, I’m the proud owner of Rory Gallagher’s Vox AC/30 Amp. The Normal Channel on this amp sounds fantastic! The Bright Channel sounds much too bright. The amp needs proper servicing. Now, the funny thing is that the amp has 4 Mullard EL83 output tubes instead of EL84. All the preamp tubes are Mullard as well. My question is: Was the amp modified to use EL83 or are EL84 and EL83 switchable? I can tell you that if the amp was modified, it must have been done a long, long time ago because it looks completely stock to me. For those interested, I will post pics shortly. Any particular shots you want to see? Jim

Damn!! Can you get me his Strat? I’d be willing to pay up to $500 for it, even though it has a little bit of wear & tear on it. Who has Rory’s Strat? Does anybody know? I sure hope the thing didn’t fall into the hands of House of Blues, or the Rock & Roll Hall of Stupidity or something. Pete — One egg left? Don’t you want to see the pics? As for the Strat… I could get it but $500 is a bit too much for 2 pieces of old rotten wood screwed together… Don’t waste your money on that.

We used these in old glowbug transmitter’s, Lafayette used them in 6 meter ham sets (6CH6 I think) They have about 20% less power capacity as well as transcunductance however they are more broadband in VHF RF, and final tank circuits > The amp needs proper servicing.
Does it sound bad or have a problem, Mullards last a LONG LONG time ? -J

The amp does sound good to me. It does hum quite a bit though, and the Bright Channel is too bright. I also figured that since it’s last checkup in 1971, some filter caps might need replacing and some scratchy pots cleaning. What needs to be done to use EL84 again? I may just leave it with the EL83 since Rory used them. I love to read, if the book incorporates music, than it’s a match made in heaven. High Fidelity, Nick Hornby: If you haven’t read the book, you probably have seen the movie, both are great, one of the top five books I ever read. Basket Case, Carl Hiatsen: Another one that my wife hated, I kept waking her up because I couldn’t stop laughing. Cool for Cats, Jessica Adams: This one is good for the girls here, it’s sort of a "Bridget Jones Diary" punk. I just started reading this one, and it’s hard to let it go. My teacher in cologne told me about a good one too, I have to find my papers where I have it written down. So, do you like it too? Have you read these and what did you thought of them? Any recommendations? — Chris Email address is fake because I really hate spam, sorry.
I love reading too…but i’ve been reading a lot of sci-fi stuff…mostly becuase that’s all my dad has lying around the house, but i just finished reading ‘Ringworld’, so i want to get my hands on something else. A friend of mine (who’s as musician) reccomended the biography of Motley Crue, that might be next… > My teacher in cologne told me about a good one too

Hi Chris, Try "Espedair Street" by Iain Banks. It’s the story of the rise and fall of a 70’s supergroup, from the point of view of the bassist/songwriter. Funny, sad and thought-provoking. A terrific read. Cheers, Frank

Well my friend then I take you read "The hitchhikers guide to the galaxie", if not, do yourself a favour. Also if you like DOuglas Adams style, you can try "Last Chance to see"or something like that, a trip he made for the bbc around the globe writing about endangered species. Timeline by Michael Crichton is also very cool. > My teacher in cologne told me about a good one too > I did a course on ‘aftershave studies’, but didn’t get as far as cologne.

‘Repossessed’ and ‘Head On’,two bios from Julian Cope. All the guff from his early days at college leading into the rise and fall of ‘Eric’s’ club in Liverpool and the mayhem of life on the road with Teardrop Explodes. Very entertaining read. ‘Mr. Nice’ by Howard Marks. Not strictly about music but funny and remarkable tales of the former major league Hash smuggler. SR

I would probably start with Skin Tight, it realy doesn’t matter. I’m forwarding this to me so I can be sure and remember the titles. Kristoff mention sci fi… so I will recommend Robt. Silverbergs book "The World Inside".. this is not only fun because of it’s basic story *which is great, Silverberg’s the shit* but because the lead character is a musician.. and the book highlights a future concert, the society around it, the people involved, the music, effects, etc.. I have two of my own, neither final drafts though.. probably I suck anyway. *G* Twang! — Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
I just finished reading "Espedair Street" (at the recommendation of someone here – must be you Frank?) and I loved it. Highly recommended. Also, recommend "Be Cool" by Elmore Leonard. It’s his take on getting into the music business with the usuall scuzzy characters that Leonard is famous for. Actually, anything by Leonard is good. Tom

I’m currently reading "Sex, drugs & mum in the front row" by Evan Kanarakis. It’s an aussie book so not sure if you can get it overseas. I highly recommend it. "Don’t Sleep With Your Drummer" is a cute book about a chick band in LA that almost makes it. Published by MTV press, no less. "The Bear Comes Home" by Rafi Zabor is a much heavier book. It’s really fantastic on putting the musical experience into words.

Go easy on yourself Paula. Some people may feel settled at two months but I sure didn’t. I felt out of my skin, elated, angry, calm.. all over the place. I’m so proud of you. At first I thought, "ah poor Paula, still hanging on by the skin of her teeth". Then I thought, "isn’t hanging on by the skin of your teeth better than dying of lung cancer or emphysema?" It must be, although it seems to not be. I hear you, girl. It’s tough. I still have black days and then have days when I go around singing show tunes to the boys. My dh got a new job and will be away 2 weeks out of every month, and I quit my job, so I’ll be home FT with the boys starting Monday. I hope things are turning around. I hate to read posts where people have gone back to smoking after a long quit, like Red Robin, but all I can do is try to learn something from it. Hey Paula! Hang on. (Geeze – there’s two ’60’s songs) Average is a good thing. Average is normal. Normal means not smoking. (Hey, we’re not born with a butt between our lips … unless we’re transverse … ignore me – I could carry that on ad infinitum) There *is* something out there that makes it work for you. I found mine today. It was the mental image of 1000+ cigashits that I would have smoked had I chosen to. As Rosie says … read and post, post and read … just don’t smoke. Big hugs on ya, P. Hey Paula! I am gonna say the same thing to you that I just said to GX. You are so worth the struggle and the fight. Do not give in. Hang in and hang on and hang out here and do whatever it is you gotta do, to not light up a smoke. No matter what. Thats the first thing you do, is you do not smoke, no matter what. Go easy on yourself Paula. Some people may feel settled at two months but I sure didn’t. I felt out of my skin, elated, angry, calm.. all over the place. I’m so proud of you. Pulled about my copy of Deep Purple – MKIII: The Final Concert (2CD set) today. I’d forgotten how killer Roger Glovers bass playing on this album is really killer. Even some slapping!

So I got an interesting phone call yesterday. Last week, I took a Sunset 15 watt head over to the Amp Shop in Sherman Oaks, CA, and they loved it. They ordered three of them to start out and are now a dealer. So that’s pretty cool, I thought. They insisted that I leave the demo head with them while I’m building theirs. No problem. So they let a guy take it out of the store to try it on a recording session and they called me yesterday to let me know that he refuses to bring it back. He wants to buy it. I said I’d build him a new one, as that one is getting pretty banged up, but they insist he want THAT exact amp. Turns out, it’s Steve Morse, and the project he’s working on is the new Deep Purple album, which is being recorded now, here in L.A. I’m a little happy… Gary Gerhart www.GerhartAmps.com
Hello Gary, What a wonderful call to receive! May all the reviews be like this – well deserved for one of our own AGA regulars. I agree with Steve; an amp might have a particular feel and tone that he doesn’t want to lose – even though there might be an identical amp, it may sound and feel just a tad different. I’d more than be willing to put up with scuffs, abrasions, rips in tolex, etc, if the amp was structurally sound, and had "that tone." Thanks for sharing your god vibes with us, Gary. More of the same for you. Walk in Beauty, Peace. Scott

Are you going to let him push you around like that just because he’s a star? Pretty damn cool Gary. Maybe your amp’ll get mentioned in interviews, or even album credits. Maybe you could cut a deal with him where he mentions the amp in album credits, and he can have it for free. Pete — Return to your homes. And never dance to this evil beat again. –Samurai Jack
Dear Gary, Steve called and wants you to send me one also. Thanks, Dave

Very cool news Gary!!! Hmmm… now, how to wrangle that into an endorsement deal….. Or at least an "honorable mention". I doubt Morse is considering a Buzzaforte
Gary, Congrats. First for the amp and for getting an endorsement from one of the classiest people in the biz. I met Morse once at a guitar clinic in SC and he is a genuinely warm human being and a regular guy. I hope the association turns into something lifelong for you. Good luck. Dana

Hello, I’ve seen your posts dissing Doug R, and I’m wondering what foundation of facts and logic you’re coming from? You’re probably aware that others who have posted on this NG, who have heard Doug’s work, have praised him. I have not had the pleasure of playing through one of Doug’s amps, or an amp he’s worked on – have you? Are you judging Doug and his work by the sound bites you get through your computer from his website? I don’t know about you, but the limited experience I’ve had with tone and sound through my computer tells me, personally, that the source tone and sound is a lot different than what I’m hearing through the computer. What is your personal acrimony based on? I am human and not immune to feelings of anger and frustration, and not feeling like I’m in control, etc. When I can rise to the moment and be conscious, I remember what Buddha said about anger – that it’s like someone reaching into a blazing fire to grab a red-hot coal with their bare hand, with the intention of throwing it at someone. Anyone can be angry – it takes a bigger man to forgive and move on. I would guess that most of us on the AGA are happy for the success that Doug and Gary and others are having – their success ultimately affects us as players, not to mention the good vibes of seeing your friends succeed and being happy for them. What’s the basis for your anger and frustration? If you ever need another friend, I’d be happy to be one. I’ve read many of your posts, and you seem to have a lot of experience with a variety of amps, but while not trying to judge you, I’ve seen this angry edge come through many times. What’s going on – are you OK? Feel free to doubt my intentions, but there is always the possibility of change, growth and personal evolvement. Let me know if you’d like another friend. Hands palm-to-palm and pouring a cup of tea for peace. Walk in Beauty, Peace. Scott – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >– > Shit. > How much will the price increase be? Thanks for your dissertation on my "I doubt Morse is considering a Buzzaforte" reply. The guy is a scumbag….IMO….If I need an amp that sounds like Led Zep played thru a comb and waxpaper….I’ll check them out.
Hey, that’s really cool. I hope you guys develop a great working relationship that furthers both of your interests. Keep up the good work, Gary. ~kp
>Gary, very good news for you…you deserve it. >Say, I’m curious….are you still planning a 2xEL84 kit?
Yep. I think I settled on the idea of an AC30TB preamp with a switchable clean boost in front of the preamp pushing a pair of EL84s. I’m awaiting a quote from Mercury Magnetics on a custom output transformer for it. I’ll keep you posted… Gary Gerhart www.GerhartAmps.com

Is the attenuator still being considered? Jeff

Yes. I forgot to mention that. A built-in attenuator will definitely be part of the kit. Gary Gerhart www.GerhartAmps.com
