Where are the Bass Solos?

Question:

well, I meant he is THE man figuratively.  I know there is no one person, i was just using it for phrasing.  As for the silence thing, he uses silence very effectively.  I don’t really see how you can say he never pauses or uses silence…. Yoho Thanks to everyone for the flaming…..

Response:

There’s room for that in Primus.  It doesn’t take away from the music in any way, shape, or form.  You’re just jealous! Bandleaders are often at center stage. His vision is amazing. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Cliff >didn’t >seem to understand the fact that silence is one of the sweetest sounds of >the bass >He was too busy >Hooray someone finally exposes Claypool >for the obnoxious song-shredder he is. He’ll never let his responsibility as a >bassist overrule his incessant need to be center stage. >                             Hawkeye8th > "over the hill but still ascending"

Response:

P-Nut from 311 has solos in some songs.  WWIT on Transistor and then "nutsymptom" on Grassroots.  He probably has some others that i’m not thinking of right now.

Sir, will you please cite your source.                            Thank you,                             Hawkeye8th BTW, who is Cliff Burton?

Response:

:> :>: Cliff Burton is the man : BTW, who is Cliff Burton? He used to be Metallica’s bass player until a careless tour bus driver cut his career (and life) short. He truly was a great bassist, but definitely not THE man. —                      Javier Gonzalez Nicolini       Ingenieria Civil en Computacion – Universidad de Chile          "Ley de Murphy: Todo lo que puede salir mal sald            Signature: Segmentation fault (core dumped)"

Response:

>He truly was a great bassist, but >definitely not THE man.

and who, in your opinion, is?

Response:

a guitar player?  gee…..now i know that John popper doesn’t play harmonica, he’s actually a guitar player…..cliff didn’t keep rythm as good as flea? where does this come from?  I think in the end you aren’t really making a comparison, you’re just pushing your hero up on the scale.  You don’t have any real basis for saying that flea is a better bassist than cliff.

Response:

>what? sounds like guitar?  do you listen to very much music? >Cliff Burton is the man.  He is the greatest bass player i have ever heard.  He >created the greatest melodies that i have ever heard. He was most definitely >more talented than flea will ever be. He had the creative genious that masses >of people in society dream of having.

The "greatest melodies" you’ve "ever heard"?  Jeez.  I like Cliff’s stuff but it’s far from genious.  And why slam another player in favour of Cliff?  Do you think Flea set out to play like Cliff and failed?  Flea has a very different bag, and a good one.   Wheat

Response:

First of all, I can’t stand twenty minutes of Red Hot Chili Peppers without going into convulsions. No hero complex here, only the fact that Flea is one hell of a bassist. I said that I liked his rythmic ideas more than Cliff’s, as Cliff 90% of the time pounded the root note at a fixed rate with a triplet here and there. My problem with Cliff’s solos is that he didn’t seem to understand the fact that silence is one of the sweetest sounds of the bass. What you don’t play is as important or more important than what you play. CLiff’s solos had no silences whatsoever. He was too busy shredding the hell out of the strings, wich is cool, and is more than I can do on my bass, but I’d rather listen to Jaco and that tasteful silence :) Plus in case you are wondering, my bass heros would be Stuart Zender and Geddy Lee. Not the best players in the world, but I love their style. There is no such thing as THE man. There are great players and someone among them is your hero :) . Me, Les Claypool bores me after four tunes or so, as I’m clutching my hair and screaming "Ok I DO realize you have incredible chops but could you STOP DOING THat DAMNED SHOWOFF SHIT and SHOW ME THE SONG!!!" All of the above, of course, is my own humble opinion. No one owns or even leases the truth. ….sorry for my rambling, I’m fresh out of a thermodynamics test that didn’t go well at all… *sniff* —                      Javier Gonzalez Nicolini       Ingenieria Civil en Computacion – Universidad de Chile          "Ley de Murphy: Todo lo que puede salir mal sald            Signature: Segmentation fault (core dumped)"

Response:

This has sorta something to do with the thread, well kinda ;) Apparently when Cliff died, Les Claypool tried out for the position of Metallica’s bassist. I’m just trying to think of what Metallica would sound like with Les as their bassist ;) — Regards, HardRocK/CC www.chaosite.com

Hooray someone finally exposes Claypool for the obnoxious song-shredder he is. He’ll never let his responsibility as a bassist overrule his incessant need to be center stage.                              Hawkeye8th  "over the hill but still ascending"

I think Tony Bono from "Into Another".  If you haven’t heard check’em out. "Powered" from there self title has a cool bass solo and the solo in "Absolute Zero" from Eepy Creepy is really something else as far as metal solos go.  And on the album "Ignarus" is loaded with cool bass riffs like the intro to "Poison Fingers".  Really you guys should check’em out. Joe

Response:

Has any one mention Cliff Burton ?? Anethesia (Pulling Teeth) , of Metallica’s Kill ‘em all album, is legendary — Regards, HardRocK/CC www.chaosite.com

: Has any one mention Cliff Burton ?? : Anethesia (Pulling Teeth) , of Metallica’s Kill ‘em all album, is legendary I am a diehard fan of Metallica, but also a diehard fan of the bass, and Cliff’s solo sounds more like guitar to me (I mean, I know it’s a distorted bass, but the "feeling" is like guitar, not bass.) —                      Javier Gonzalez Nicolini       Ingenieria Civil en Computacion – Universidad de Chile          "Ley de Murphy: Todo lo que puede salir mal sald            Signature: Segmentation fault (core dumped)"

: what? sounds like guitar?  do you listen to very much music? : Cliff Burton is the man.  He is the greatest bass player i have ever heard.  He : created the greatest melodies that i have ever heard. He was most definitely : more talented than flea will ever be. He had the creative genious that masses : of people in society dream of having. Well, I’ve been playing bass for seven years and listening to Metallica for nine. He could play faster solos than Flea, and he was a great composer, but bass-wise, I’d stick with Flea. As a composer, with Cliff. You’ve gotta love the harmonies in Orion and so on, but that’s "composing" wich is different to "bass playing". Same story with Steve Harris, the guy’s a great composer but his bass playing gets boring after a little while. Sure he was a genius. Never said otherwise. But as a bass player he was a great guitarist. His rythmic ideas weren’t all that hot, and most of his work is pounding root notes. Sure, it is what fits the music Metallica was doing when he died. I DO listen to music (four hours a day average) and I sure know a couple of things about bass. And I DO think that Cliff Burton is overrated as a Bass player. Maybe it is that Metallica’s style constrains bass playing. (You get that feeling listening to Kill ‘em all, the bass is more up-front in the mix and the lines are better.) Just my $0.02. Flame away, but please don’t let my-hero complex cloud your views. —                      Javier Gonzalez Nicolini       Ingenieria Civil en Computacion – Universidad de Chile          "Ley de Murphy: Todo lo que puede salir mal sald            Signature: Segmentation fault (core dumped)"

Flea is a ok bass player I guess, a fine actor as well (Back To The Future 2), but when it comes to metal I say Alex or Cliff. Most people look over corpse because of the dark vocals and subject matter, but if you ever saw the Cannibal Corpse home video and the saw the intro to bloodlands performed live….it is almost unreal at how talented this dood Alex Webster is. I also have to give him credit for writting all of the band’s music, and feel sorry that because of his genre of music his band is one of those groups where people are like "I heard the name Cannibal Corpse, but never listened to them". I mean everyone and their fucking mom’s knows Metallica and can probly play a few tunes even, but not many people have heard the Smells Like Teen Spirit of Death Metal as in Tomb Of The multilated’s  Hammer Smashed Face!
