Tech 21 Comptortion review

Question:

This is a sweet pedal. I just got to try one out for a couple of hours and I must say it operates very quietly and very efficiently. Gets the job done quite well. I’ve needed a compressor pedal for a long time, and now that I’ve sold my FUCKING Boss Mt-2 Metal Zone, I can finally get on with my tonal life! I like this pedal a lot, good distortion (not "death metal") and compression at the same time. The only one of its kind as far as I know. I managed to get a decent Guns N’ Roses tone from it. And I think at one point I nalied Michael Schenker’s tone from "The Unforgiven" album. — Enam Khan Visit my web page at: http://www.guitarfixation.musicpage.com

What kind of guitar did you play and what amp did you use to evaluate this pedal?  How does it sound without the compression on?  How does it sound with the distortion turned to minimum, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4. Full ? Did you use it in conjunction with any other pedals?  Does it alter your tone when bypassed?  Or is it even true bypass? Saying it "gets the job done" or you can sound like Guns-N-Roses (which song?) really doesnt tell us much except that *you* liked it.

Hehe, true. I guess I did sound pretty vague there.. I used an Ibanez RG450 guitar and my Tech 21 Trademark 60 combo. I used it by itself. As far as the question of bypass, I know the tone of my amp pretty well and as far as I could tell it did sound like a true bypass when it was not being used. I’d have to say it sounded like GNR from the Use Your Illusion era. As for my comment about Michael Schenker’s tone on his latest album, my amp can get that sound pretty easily anyway, so I didn’t use the distortion for that, just compression. At 1/4 it sounds fairly clean with a hint of oeverdive. At 1/2 it’s just plain overdrive. But if you crank up the tone to 2 o’clock and the distortion to 2 with the compression at around 1, you get an excellent hard rock lead sound. The pedal isn’t extreme in any way, it just provides you with enough of the effects to get a good sound. My guitar still sounded like it always does, and to be honest the fact that it has some of the best pickups I’ve heard in a guitar of that price range is probably the main reason I sounded the way I did. Plus the Tech 21 Trademark 60 is one very nice amp, but once again, at extreme settings (everything set to 10 or something close to that) it shakes a little due to loud volume.
