I stopped listeing to commercial radio about 10 years ago (now 43). Mostly now it is National Public Radio. Still buy CD’s though. Last 4: Victor Wooten "Ying and Yang – 3 stars – For bass players only. Tool "Lateralus" – 2 stars – Sound like outtakes spliced together. These guys are losing me fast. Doyle Bramhall II "Smokestack" – 4.5 stars – Real 60’s, early 70’s feel from a modern rock band. Buddy Guy "Sweet Tea" – 5 stars – Inspiring what he can do with one chord. Just when I thought I’d heard it all… I hope I never lose my interest in music despite the radio programmer’s efforts. Geoff Boulden
The music I listen to is in my head. I have the musical equivalent of "photographic memory" so that the melody, drums, bass (of course) etc. is all right there. Why waste money on a radio or Walkman? (or maybe walkperson" in these PC days). My wife thinks it’s really weird that I can listen to one note of a recording and identify the song and performer, simply from the timbre of the instruments. I’ve always suspected bassists are more prone to this than others — anyone else in the ng have this odd affliction?? did write, or cause to appear, hereinunder or as incorporated herein by reference: – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I find myself only listening to music on my daily commute. John Cage: 4′33" I’ve been to a performance, it’s pretty cool, and if someone asked me to go again, I can’t say "heard that". There’s a Bay Area radio station, known for its politics, not its music (KPFA http://www.kpfa.org), that plays the most incredible music of all kinds; they played 4′33" once. > Musical reference; 4 mins 31 seconds… The crowd make the noise. I *hate* music. Particularly that music you hear on AC stations, and the constant thumping coming from most cars, and the silly summer songs you hear 365/365 in *every* store, be it records, clothes or food. All at a level I wouldn’t want at a concert, let alone a fscking drugstore. There’s too much musical noise around – you can’t go to a pub or a restaurant or an elevator without listening to sounds you don’t want to hear. I’have music in my *head* most of the time – no need to have my ears busy

A couple songs I played on with Gail Swanson are in pretty heavy rotation on two radio stations over here…..and I still won’t listen to
I listen to very little of it, for two reasons: One is the awful reality of radio in Milwaukee (the horror, the horror), so bad it could drive you away from music permanently. I used to have three radio refuges — the jazz (real, not "smooth") station and the two classical stations (one actually broadcasting from far northern Illinois). The Illinois classical station is now "The Mix", featuring everything by Matchbox 20 and Smashmouth that you DON’T want to hear 79 times per day. The other classical station switched from local programming to some satellite syndication service that has dumbed the classics down to the level of, say, Wayne and Garth. The second reason is that I just don’t get time to listen to anything else but the radio — I can’t even imagine being able to put in a CD and listening to the whole thing. Here’s what I’ve bought recently, though: Niacin’s "Deep", Victor Wooten’s "Show of Hands", Marty Robbins’ Greatest Hits, Karrin Allyson’s "From Paris to Rio", The Best of Tom Jones, and The Buena Vista Social Club. Honest! I’ve been listening to Jean-Luc Ponty (constantly, for a long time), BR5-49, John Prine, Randy Newman, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, and Joni Mitchell. So, I have my jazz (WYMS, 88.9) and I have the World Cafe each night from 7-10 p.m. (WUWM, 89.7). I will, occasionally, tune in to 920 AM, WOKY, and listen to Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Dean Martin, etc. – what the hell else can I do, "modern" music has not appealed to me since about 1985.

I work for clients from 1 mile to about 100 miles from my house so on the long drives I usually listen to CDs. At work I rarely listen to music since I’m usually in someone elses’ office. I have a home office and occasionally listen to music when I’m working there but my youngest son is a music nazi and usually takes over when I start playing my music and I end up having to listen to Korn (argh !) or Tool (much better but still not for me) all day. On summer weekends when time allows my wife and I barbeque and sit on the back deck drinking beer til the sun goes down listening to Bruce Cockburn, Van Morrison or Bob Dylan. Andrew Thompson

I usually get into a record like for two weeks, a month if it’s good, and then I’ll pop something else in the MD player. Late Junction, Radio 3, is supposed to be good (I miss it as I need my sleep, but it seems to be "the" place on BBC for decent music these days). Doing a quick search for Andy K, it turns out he’s on R3 too http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/world/andykershaw.shtml Hmmm. Maybe R3 is getting a bit more modern and interesting? http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/world/index.shtml (maybe some of this will be available as streamable audio for non-UK people, too). Searching for something new to listen to is becoming increasingly difficult due the ‘force feed’ nature of the companies that control the music biz – Sony etc. The last radio I bothered with was a guy called Andy Kershaw who had a show on BBC that played a huge variety of World music (some incredible musicians from parts of the world I’d never heard of as well as a version of ‘Ghost Riders in…’ by a Vietnamese street band!) plus some nice old blues stuff thrown in too.I also first heard of the Buena Vista Social club from there too. Sadly the ‘beeb employs morons who decided that this should be replaced by the usual formulaic kak you hear noon till night so most new music I listen to is from going to gigs and festivals or something reccommended by friends. If your looking for something fresh, try Richard Thompson (ex Fairport Convention) if you have’nt already or a french band called ‘Sixun’,phenomenal bass playing. SR
I listen to music a lot in the car. Primarily CD’s as I can’t stand radio ( how many times can you hear the same damned Matchbox 20 song in a day? I think I heard it 6 times on a single station one day…). I listen to music at work, too. Got a Bose Wave Radio/CD for my birthday and the thing kicks ass for such a tiny unit. Especially when cranking some Marcus Miller or old school funk. Nice bass. Lately it’s been rotating between Marcus Miller’s M2, Miles Davis’ Amandla and Bitches Brew, Attention Defecit’s Idiot King, a blues guitarits buddy’s new disc and the Gap Band’s Greatest Hits. Also have a few funk compilation CD’s that I throw in a lot. Don’t listen much at home. Very rarely in fact. Generally the only music I listen to at home is the stuff I practice and/or create. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > silence is great! > I guess what triggered this is that I didn’t even listen to anything on my > 40 min. commute home this P.M., and I just love silence soooo much. I find more and more, that I only listen to music that I have to learn for an upcoming gig. Seeing that I’ve been booked solid this summer and doing a lot of last minute fill in gigs, I guess I have enough songs to listen to without turning on the radio. As far as new music, I get enough of that when I teach. Someone’s always bringing in the latest "flavor of the week" Jay S

On the subject of bad/good radio: I’ve stopped listening to the "local" (ie that I can pick up here) radio in my office and instead listen almost continually to KEXP (http://www.kexp.org) via the ‘net. I spend nearly 4 hours per day surfing on the Internet and always listen to music while I do it. I dowonload every song (www.kazaa.com) someone says to listen to (the last one was Atomic from Blondie ;o) I play the bass (practice the songs) about 2 hours a day and play 1 hour. Another six hour studying (this is the mmost boriing). And sometimes theory. I never listen to the radio (the only radio station that plays rock plays crap) but a lot of my CDs (I buy one/month) ; I love Melodic Death Metal (that heppens to be often performed by Scandinavien bands) such as Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Cradle of Filth or Nightwish (try the Wishmaster – their last released album) but on my computer I downloaded stuff like M. Miller, Herbie Hancock, Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi or the soundtrack of Friends… I don’t care if it’s smthg I will just listen to once, since it’s free

I find myself in the same predicament. I was only listening to music on my commute, THEN all the radio stations went to talk morning shows. That left me with the ride home, then I stumbled across a talk radio show on the drive home that I can’t turn off, the guy is hilarious! I have 2 CDs I bought a week and a half ago and I’ve only managed to make it through 4 songs! I’m finding it extremely difficult to pickup new material … because I don’t hear any! Scott

I tend to hear a lot of music at work, so it kind of loses it’s appeal to me when I’m elsewhere sometimes. ’specially when at work it can tend to be one song over and over and over and over and over and over. m

I listen to music at work and most nights I have reheasal or a gig……so I don’t listen to music when I drive, I like the silence! I could never listen to music when I’m trying to go to sleep, because I can’t stop thinking about what chord changes they are playing, or get inspired and go practice my bass at 4:00am and never get any sleep. Some newsreaders (like AGENT) allow you to set a filter and use an AND or an OR between them – Hitler OR Nazi - will filter messages if either one shows in the header line. Nekkid AND Booty – will filter only if BOTH occur – this would stop www.nekkid-booty.com, but will still allow a post like "My rig kicked booty" or "FS: Rosewood Nekkid ‘74 Jazz Bass" You can also set filters so you will target just one person (like me, for instance), try filtering by AUTHOR to do this. You should be able to set your filters for just one group, or for all groups (global setting).
but then what are we to do for amusement? ah, nevermind…

Is there anyone that plays this amp, either past or present, and can give an honest opinion on this amp? It can be negative or positive…I’m looking for both. I’d GREATLY appreciate it! Rick —
Hi, Have one here with 1960AV half stack. Does the job A-OK. No amp in this world is perfect, so you have to make do. Try two channel version as well before you decide. Some say two channel verson sounds little warmer. Good luck, Tony – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I am considering purchasing a JCM 2000 TSL. That really depends on your style of music. I didn’t think it had enough gain for death metal, but would sound fine for "regular" metal! On the other hand, one of the guys in Deeds of Flesh, a brutal death metal band, uses the DSLversion (same basic tone) and is satisfied with it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –
Although I don’t own one, I’ve played through them enough to know that this is the amp I’m saving up for. Not the TSL60, but the TSL100. You may be able to get the power tube overdrive at lower sound levels with the 60, but I’d rather have the seperate eq for each channel that the TSL100 has. This is what really pissed me off about the TSL60. I can’t understand why Marshall just didn’t use the TSL10 pre-amp as is, with a 60 watt power section. Why did they scale back on pre-amp features in the TSL60. It probaby cost them MORE to to that..it certainly cost them sales.
I agree with the other poster here about the "two channel version". I had ‘em both, and the DSL, I thought was better – certainly warmer. Don’t get me wrong – both are fine but I feel the DSL just sounded better (lovely clean sound too) Certainly try the DSL anyway before you buy……but if you go for the TSL, for the type of amp it is, it’s a good one. Most definitely. If it came to preferences, I would rather have the 60 if it weren’t for the lack of another eq. In fact, I probably would have bought it by now. But if someone comes out with a better amp (for my preferences) before I can buy the TSL100, I will buy it. But, for now, I’m still aiming for this amp. I just think it’s interesting that when I posted for opinions on this amp all I got were negative reviews. Now all these latest responses seem to LOVE the amp.
Hi, That’s common thing. People tend to love what they have. So if you like TSL100 you gotta have it. I have one too. Well I have bunch of other amps/combos as well which I like them all for a reason. I can/do build amps. I don’t think it is nice when some one asks about something all they do is bashing instead of giving some constructive opinion straying the subject off course. Towards the end of the song ‘Primitive’ from ‘SoulFly’ there is a break with a riff that has a cool effect. I thought it was guitar at first but I just saw a live video of the song and the bass player is playing it. Is there any bass players out there who can stomach SoulFly help me with the name of this effect. Tanks and Tank-you in advance!

First let me state that I’ve played and listened to a ton of metal. It was the main thing I listened to and played for almost 10 years. That said, I have no doubt that the guy is a good bass player, but I couldn’t watch/listen to that link above for more than a minute because the vocals were absolutey horrid. I’m not talking bad, like a GG Allin or Morbid Angel bad, I’m talking really bad. There’s one thing I didn’t understand about a lot of borderline death metal is why the "singer" has to try and sound like cookie monster with strep throat. The thing is, he’s doing it on purpose… They should listen to Fear Factory, or Geezer Butler’s first solo album to find out how it really should be done. Anyway, that’s enough rant for me today. Laters. Adam
LOL I have to agree with you. I should have warned you to just view the bass player and forget about the nightmare around him. I was disappointed at this live performance. I have seen better shows. Mudvayne has been known to cancel shows frequently due to his voice going out. I guess it was on it’s way out. The recorded material on there release LD 50 is for somewhat easier listening. When he’s not screaming he sings pretty good. Anyway, I placed the link so bass player can view the bass player in action. LOL, when the guitar player comes in with his vocals I still find myself laughing out loud. The recorded material is good if you’re into heavy stuff. ( : LOL These guys may be borderline metal to you but they are moving up the food chain very fast. They are not even on a metal label. They’re on SONY. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> First let me state that I’ve played and listened to a ton of metal. Hi Anna: Good to know you’re healthy. You know, both Paxil and Depakote can have sedating effects. Have you ever (with your doc’s permission of course) tried scheduling your doses differently during the day? So you get less sedation when you don’t need it and the best effect from the meds. my gp. they observed all my plummin’. found out what was in my ears and stuff. shes gonna work on the sleeping all the time thing. she said she would call my psychiatrist guy and talk meds with him. she is thinking there might be meds that will do better to regulate my sleep than the ones im on (depakote/paxil) and that might be one place to start. sooo that sounds good. i hope she comes up with somethin’. regards to their effects on sleep….. does anyone wanna repost any of that or help me find it? .. im smart but not the fastest thinker some days……. thanks…. soo thats what they are trying so far. she agreed to let me sleep when i wanted. she said if i get that sick when i dont sleep i better just go for it for now, not bother to try and reset myself anymore…… thats a relief…… soooo theres the big doctors app. nothing too fascinating. on the risque’ side im back on le’ pill. they are even lower dose now than previously, i guess they found out the pills work with even less hormones than they already thought even just a year or two ago…… the level is cut again by like 1/3 and apparently they are still as effective. so im trying some of these they are new. she gave me 3 months worth to sample so saved me a lot of $$ !!! so that was very positive!! me and steve got together last night and it seemed just as nice as it had previously so…. verrrrrrrrrrry cautiously all circuits are go…… i totally unloaded the entire list of possible downfalls of my various conditions…… i hope i made it as dismal and horrible sounding as it can really be…. he says he understands all that stuff and wants to learn about how to help me manage it. so, thats something…. soo im gonna fool around with these doctors until the summertime. if they havne’t come up with anything solid by then, i am gonna go down to LA and get my dad’s friends to test me up. he knows every dr in los angeles. (((he knows almost every -person- in los angeles!!!))) and they will figure it out and fast cause cost will be no limit and he knows soooo im feeling very very thankful these days. still no asdmm……. it will be nice when that gets going….. anna — "blessed am i to dwell in this beautiful temple" "allow me to accept these gifts with grace"

I don’t have one of these amps. I have a 1989 Marshall stack. But I have jammed with people who do have them. They can sound terrible if you don’t know how to set the controls or they can sound fantastic if you do. They are very versatile for a Marshall. Pt

Wow, were in the same pickle. The majority of people seem to be selling the mark IV, and it looks more versatile, not just tonewise. You can lower the wattage with the flip of a switch and it has a master volume so you don’t have to blast it to get that tone. But they say the dual recto just has *that* distotion. Take a look at the thread I posted on "mark IV vs. dual rectifier"
>for me…… I’m getting a Boogie next….. either a Dual Recto or a Mark IV
how much did you sell it for?
No. They’re WORSE. While it’s admittedly not an original idea, I do offer free removal of any JCM2000 products which could be fouling up your love life and preventing you from getting your fair share of the nookie, as well as keeping you from getting signed to the machine. I regret that you’ll have to pay the shipping, but I promise the amp will not come back to haunt you. Discretion assured. – KP
> Are the TSL and Dsls really that bad for distortion/overdrive. I have > fantisized over these amps, but now hear bad things. > Thanks
Well it depends on what you expect your amp to do for you, and knowing what you want from an amp. If you are a first time owner and are not into the roots of where Marshall came from, well it maybe a good starting amp for a basic starting point. If you are a seasoned *experienced* player looking for a change, it could be a good thing as far as changes go. But, if you want the Marshall that wrote the History Books, this ain’t it!!! If you want to do things the way the players like Hendrix, Blackmore, Clapton (Cream), and the rest of the power trios of the ’60s, then this ain’t it either. If you are a pro playing in a band and want to cut the bands mix off the stage, again, this ain’t it. If you are a player looking for clean sounds that has most of the basics, yep, it could be a good thing. But if, you are looking of a lot of textures with the sounds of the old days, this ain’t it. Well, I hoped this helped… Regards, Rich Koerner, Time Electronics. http://www.timeelect.com Service * Repair * Modifications * Design Engineering Live Sound & Studio Production

Many people don’t like them, have had problems with them, hated the cut backs on quality parts, and been vocal right here.
I have a TSL, i think it is great. Sounds really good etc. No problems here. Most of things i have heard that are negative are about the footswitch, who cares. Mine works fine for that two. Test it before you leave the store.

Pro’s love them. Amateurs hate them. Simple as that.
I don’t think it’s a "bad" amp–it mainly depends on the style of music you play and the sound you want. I play death metal and I didn’t think it had enough gain–probably has plenty for less extreme music. Otherwise, it’s a very decent amp. For my needs, however, a Peavey 5150 works better–despite a less than wonderful clean tone! (not to mention it is about 1/2 the price of a TSL or even DSL!) John

I really agree with John on this. I currently own a JCM 2000 DSL 50 watt and though it sounds good its gain channel just doesnt have enough to it. However when I play my friend’s 5150 head I am very satisfied with his tone. I am probably about to sell my Marshall for a good ol 5150. Seth

I’ll agree with the rest of the folks about the DSL50. Sorry I bought one. I also own a 5150 and that gets the bulk of my playing time. It’s not that it’s a bad amp for straight-ahead rock, blues, etc. but for thrash metal, heavy stuff, it’s an embarassment. And Marshall’s literature for it really brags up the fact that this is a great amp for today’s modern high-gain sounds. I even wrote them to call them on the carpet about this inaccuracy and their response was "it’s our best seller and Jason of Kid Rock plays it." I didn’t think that was such a ringing endorsement. But it’s clean channel is magnificent, I must say, but then when you play thrash, who cares? By the way, it’s up for sale. Any interested buyers, around $700 figure?

I am definately interested in the idea of buying some of the best music out there today and donating all ,but record cost, to the NRA. I am a gun rights activist who also happens to be a bass player in a thrash/Death metal band. Kinda like Ted Nugent in that I am musician who owns guns only I play bass not guitar, and well….. I never made it near as far a Ted but I am good enough to play in his band. At any rate I have an idea to promote Gun rights along with my band in a win win situation for everyone. To gun owners on the net I make this special offer. If your a Metal head gun owner you buy my band’s first Demo tape that is professionally recorded and packaged and I send the profits to the NRA in the form of a Donation. So I do not make a dime. The only funds I keep is the cost of each tape and that is 2.49 each. I will use this to press more copies of Course. I will make the donations every two months for as long as I get your mail with a note saying you saw this special offer. I am an NRA member as well and they may be able to list my band as a Contributing organization but I am not sure. The donation is not a big one but it’s something I can do and want to do. I get my tape into the public’s hands and the NRA gets some money to fight those Commies who want to ban our guns. As a plus one of the songs is about what a jerk Clinton is (Called "Like This" ) so Gun owners should fine that one most agreeable. And you got to hand it to Drummer Paz, who has only been playing drums for a mere seven years. He tackles prohibitively fast tempo’s and time changes without losing the grove for a nanosecond, and his sound is punchy and in your face. Not bad for a guy who was playing in the El Cajon pops Symphony not that long ago. it is not that i am exceptionally smart and well read that i even know what asystole means. i just watch way too much er. i had to look up torsades de point–that’s not easy you know. thank you anyways. and i have a friend who is in a death-metal band–like sepultura or static-x–and they needed a name for their band. i think medical terms are cool, and mysterious because most of us don’t know what they mean. so i suggested asystole–it’s good and morbid, and axilla, which is the medical term for armpit–not a very positive image or thought. they nixed my ideas and went with deathtrip. how obvious and unimaginative can you get?
Hey, asystole, WAY COOL NAME !!! I’m more of a Torsades de Point, myself. May take your lead and start using that. Thanks for the lead. Chris > Hello and welcome. Hi Jason Welcome to the group and feel free to post at any time. Always. Ty The singer can’t delight you with his singing unless he himself delights to sing.
