Question:
i think i asked this before, but my server deleted the old messages before i could get a reply anyway… what’s the verdict on putting wheels on a cabinet? i have a V4, and put wheels on the bottom. very convenient, but does it hurt the sound quality, resonance of a live show, etc? any thoughts? reply by email if possible, thanks, matt baker

Frankly, I can’t notice a difference between wheels and directly laid on the floor, though some claim to. I think if there IS any difference, it would be terribly slight.

More often than not I’ve fitted removable castors to cabs/combos I’ve owned.I have to say it does make a difference, but only slight,as you say. I think the issue is whether you can carry it single handed for 60 yards, which is what I faced on last night’s gig. Fit castors. SR

There have been a few threads on the pro’s and cons of having casters on cabinets, mostly having to do with the phenomenon called acoustic coupling. But then it was argued that AC happens even with casters. What it boils down to is do what do you want. FWIW I put casters on my Bag End S15-CUS with no significant ill effects. And made it a hell of alot easier to move. Joe. — Joe’s Website: http://revolution.3-cities.com/~jsanch/ Band Website: http://www.lowtones.com/bigsteveandthetrainwreck

Any accoustic coupling your gonna get is going to vary with the environment you are playing in so unless you only play in the same place all the time, it’s not something you want to rely on. I find that such environmental physical effects tend to make the sound boomier and less defined so I work eliminate them, not enhance them — Jay O’Connor http://www.r4h.org/r4hmusic

I have put castors on both my cabs, simply to ease transportation. However, I used castors with a softer rubber wheel rather than solid plastic. I have played on solid stages and hollow box-built stages and I cannot tell the difference between standing the cab on its castors or its solid rubber feet. A hollow stage ‘booms’ irrespective of what is between the cab and the floor. A solid stage doesn’t!!!! IMHO, the ease of transportation far out weighs any very slight change in acoustic characteristics which I find almost impossible to detect. — Alun P www.bassics.org
