Klein Rascal – V Brakes

Question:

>has anyone tried using v-brakes and routing the cables internally?  why >can they not be routed internally? what about other v-style brakes – >cheap trick, will that work.

Nope, Cannot do it.  One solution is to spend the money on the best pad out there (Scott Mathauser Finned) stops almost as well as V-brakes and they work and last for ever, and are cheap to replace the pads in the finns.   >and, this bike is pre-suspension. i love the frame and do not want to >upgrade. i plan to add some judy xc forks. this will lift the front up >1.5". i have spoken to several people what have done this and they said >the ride was not that different – with suspension.

This is not debatable.  Period.  Suspension affects the handling alot in a bad way, raising that front end up Messes up the geometry.  Number one it can really mess up your knees by putting your saddle that much farther behind the BB/pedal spindle.  Number Two, you didn’t mention what size your rascal is or how much post you have exposed.  this also plays a huge role in what it does, if you only have six inches of seatpost exposed and the bike is a 16 or so then no big deal, BUT if you have alot of post exposed you will be sitting on top of the rear axle and the front suspension will not work ’cause there will be no weight there!   >i would appreciate any advice or comments. >kleins rule by the way *or* pre-trek kleins i should say.

This last statement.  Okay you must just be pissed off that you paid twice as much for not quite the bike that I got.  Well not quite twice but a klein is still a klein until 1997.  The 1996 models with the exception of the pulse comps are kleins are kleins are kleins and the headsets RULE! The MCII kick ASS.  I have two Adroits.  Love em, great klein ride, great klein geometry, great klein paint, great klein service.  May I remind you that the same guys who did everything in WA still do it and still make the bike what it is.   I will say I am not happy with the turn of events with this model year.  To many lower end, it is no longer exclusive,  but hey this way more people can experience the FAWESOME ride of a klein! If you NEED suspension, get the 1996 Adroit or Attitude, you should be able to find a good deal still (My LBS still has one of each plus a couple of Pulse IIs, all with suspension!).  The trend though here is to go to rigid.  Everyone I know is riding rigid again for the same reason people are going to the speedmax/slick tires, Cause they are faster! Okay, keep the rigid, don’t bother with V brakes, use the front brake more. . . -Geoff

Dear Kristian (and other Klein owners): Here are 3 suggestions: 1.  Contact Klein and ask them to hurry production on a rumored ferrule upgrade for the rear cable hole.  This I recommend, and you can use their newly fixed web site:   http://www.kleinbikes.com/ 2.  Drill out the cable routing holes at each end of the top tube and run a full length of cable housing right through.  This probably voids the warranty, and I have yet to see if it affects the strength.  This was my choice for my Pinnacle. It works well, but is noisy in the rough (housing slaps inside of top tube). 3.  Drill out the bottom of the rear cable ‘hanger’ (on top of seat stays) and insert a ferrule.  Run an 18" loop of cable housing (roller-coaster loop style) between the hanger and the V-brake noodle.  This was my second choice, but I live in chapparal-zone, so I feared snags. Hope this helps! Tom Kenney http://www.bearcomp.com/bearcom/tom.html
