Why doesn't Ozzy play —– live??

Question:

Rhoads was a fantastic player but since he is dead the best player alive Ozzy has worked with IMO is Steve Vai. I have herd that he recorded with Ozzy & I would love to hear it as well as see Vai tour with Ozzy. Eat Em & Smile Vai did with David Lee Roth for example is a great album.

Response:

>Joe Holmes got BETTER???? Oh my, I am glad I missed last year’s Ozzfest!! >Bring back Zakk!!!

lol, yes,he was worse last year! >Victoria

Response:

I like Joe Holmes.  I thought he played pretty good.  I’m not a guitar player, but when I saw him play with Ozzy before the Ozzfest tours,  I thought he was really good.  I thought you could hear in his playing that he took lessons from Randy Rhoads, but again I’m not a guitar player, so I can’t speak from a professional level.  In my opinion, he played well at the shows I saw. I still love Zakk & Jake as well.  But Randy Rhoads will always have my #1 vote for giutar players :)

Response:

Joe Holmes got BETTER???? Oh my, I am glad I missed last year’s Ozzfest!! Bring back Zakk!!! Victoria

Response:

Now I myself like Joe Holmes but if Ozzy worked Jake E Lee rather than with Zakk that would be just as fine with me because I kind of like Bark At the Moon & the Ultimate Sin a bit more than Ozzmosis & No More Tears. I love No Rest for the Wicked though it’s Zak’s best with Oz.

Response:

>I heard Joe got better this year…  I still don’t like him. But that’s >just me. >Matt

he was MUCh better this year. Still love to see Zakk back though. Why doesnt Jake get back with ozz? "The World Is Full Of Kings And Queens,Who Blind Your Eyes Then Steal Your Dreams,It’s Heaven And Hell!"

Response:

Perhaps there is still hard feelings between Ozzy & Jake like there was with him & Tony Iommi for so many years. I like Jake’s guitar playing & perhaps Ozzy & him will get along again someday or perhaps they won’t but either way Joe Holmes & Zakk Wylde are bolth good too. I herd Ozzy wrote & recorded with Steve Vai for awhile. I would love to see Vai tour with Ozzy. He is a damn good guitar player. Eat Em & Smile with David Lee Roth is some great music he did for example.

Response:

Response:

Hehe.. I’ve got an interview with Zakk where he says he persuaded Oz to rehearse "Hole in the Sky"  (I think this was around 1992) but the faces Ozzy was pulling when he had to hit the high notes were so funny he couldn’t hit the right chords for laughing!   :-) Then Oz says if he did it live it’d have to be the last song in the set ‘cos they’d need to take him to hospital straight afterwards!  :o) — Norman O’Brien  aka  Nobby on IrC http://www.sabbath.freeserve.co.uk/

Response:

You know… I’ve seen Ozzy twice with Joe :( and I never heard him do No More Tears or Perry Mason.   I don’ know if Joe just ddn’t know them, or what… but those are my two fav Ozzy songs. I miss Zakk, he did all those songs.  I can’t wait until his new CD!!!!! Matt ZakkIsGodd!!

Response:

I’m sure Ozzy rehurses his harder songs because he has surprised many fans with some very nice gems in his set list without making any mistakes at all & he will contiue to do that because he is a very talented artist with a very special voice. It’s most likely that the more support he gets from fans the more likely he will continue to suprise us with his fantastic performances. I’m really looking forward to his next tour so anybody know when tickets will go on sale?

I know that the first show is in Phoenix, AZ.. thanks to Mitchs mailing list.. But since it’s starting new years I think they’d prolly start selling around november?

Response:

During a radio interview here in Detroit the disc jockey asked him why he never played "You Can’t Kill Rock ‘n’ Roll" live. Ozzy said it was just to high to sing.  I suspect the same is true of "Over The Mountain", if you listen to him sing it on some of the older recordings he often changed the melody so he didn’t have to sing so high. Some nights I think he could pull it off. I loved hearing "Believer" this time around. It would be nice to hear some different tunes during the Sabbath reunion, maybe "The Wizard", I doubt we’ll hear the higher ones like "Hole In The Sky" Kirk > It seems like Ozzy has been playing the same 15 songs forever-why haven’t we > heard any of thse songs performed recently? > You Can’t Kill Rock N’ Roll > Over The Mountain > -Anything off Ultimate Sin/Rest For The Wicked- > See You On The Other Side > Thunder Underground > I guess the better question is why doesn’t Ozzy ever change his setlist?

Ooh, new thread! Everyone always asks what bands would you like to see at Ozzfest, how bout what *songs*? Here’s a list of songs I’d like to hear(in no real order though.) And for the record, I prefer his solo stuff, so no Sab. Here goes: No More Tears Breaking All the Rules Hero Diary of a Madman Bark at the Moon Suicide Solution I Don’t Know Mr. Crowley You Can’t Kill Rock and Roll I Just Want You Perry Mason Back on Earth Mr. Tinkertrain Voodoo Dancer One Up the B-Side S.I.N. >I guess the better question is why doesn’t Ozzy ever change his setlist?

Well, I guess I would say for a few reasons!! I think one is that he can’t hit the higher notes especially from the Ozzmosis album. He himself has stated that fact. I think another thing is some of the song that he did with Randy are musically harder to play live.I think the third reason would be that he does have new fans each year and so I think he plays the same things because not everyone in the crowd has heard his music so he plays "Ozzy favorites", especially when he does the Ozzfest shows. I think the fourth reaason would be simply that his audiences do have thier favorite songs and he wants to please his fans by playing his most popular songs!!  Ozzy is the kind of person who wants to please everyone all of the time and tends to feel bad if he doesn’t, so I think he sticks with what has seemed to work!!!!! Although, I do have to say that I hope at the next Ozzfest he might think of playing all different songs, either do songs he has never done live or take his "normal" setlist and not use any of those songs. Well, except for "Paranoid" because it is his trade mark! I mean he did mix up his songs at the last Ozzfest a bit, so you have to give him credit for that!!!!! Linda :)

With all due respect to Ozzy, I don’t think he could hit some of the high notes that he could 10-15 years ago. In the studio, he can sing it over and over ’till he gets it right. On stage, he has one chance. ~Katie http://members.aol.com/Dreams126/oz.html

I agree. Thunder underground is a bit high pitched to sing live, but I can figure out what the hell is so hard about SATo that its NEVER(To my knowledge) been played live. Same thing with the Ozzy sabbath reunions. Same damn songs, different year. At least the new live album has Spiral Architect and Electric Funeral. If they dont do the new songs this US tour im gonna be really pissed!!! "The World Is Full Of Kings And Queens,Who Blind Your Eyes Then Steal Your Dreams,It’s Heaven And Hell!"

Although I cant answer for some of the songs you have listed, I can say that I imagine some of the older songs which feature randy on guitar were very complex peices… one guitarist and several layers of guitars…. Randy did not even play some of these songs live….. You have to remember that these guitarists of ozzy have not only everything they have written to deal with but also the ones of the guitarists before them, ozzy has had some very talented musicians in his court, and i am sure he and his bandmates want to spend the most energy they can on promoting "that particular bands" recordings. It would be nice to hear alot more of his songs live and i have been going to see ozzy live since the early 80’s… his set has changed over the years…. be glad this man tours every single year…..its alot more than some bands. — "But if you tame me, then we shall meet each other, To me, you will be unique in all the world, To you, I will be unique in all the world, You will become responsible forever for what you have tamed."                                       –Antoine de Saint-Exupery Goodbye To Romance: The Randy Rhoads Pages http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Alley/2147 Lord of the Strings: Randy Rhoads Webring http://www.angelfire.com/ri/randiroads
