What's the story behind Irvine '82 video?

Question:

Yes. Ironically this was to be "Speak Of the Devil" or what was originally sopposed to be "Tribute" (o.k.a. "History Of Ozz") It supposed to be a Two Disc set. the 1st lp to have all Ozzy material the second was to have all Black Sabbath material. Randy dies as you all know before all the Black Sabbath material could be done. So Ozzy tried to contractually fill his side of the deal for Jet records. He first filmed and recorded this concert to fill in for that album but decided at the last minute to record SOD in NY on 9/26/82 and 9/27/82 instead with all Black Sabbath material with Brad Gillis and the Blizzard band. After Randy dies they were not known as The Blizzard Of Oz band anymore. This show is Excellent sounding (except for the guitar work turned way down). Hope I helped.

Response:

By the way, if you get the opportunity, I suggest getting a copy of this show on DVD.  It was released recently in Brazil on DVD and the quality is A+++.  Absolutely perfect.  The only problem with this show, is it’s not Randy.  It would have been a million times better with THE MAN on guitar. Also, there is a very short mention of the show being in honor of Randy and Rachel Youngblood(Sharon’s friend and band hairdresser)at the very end of the show.  I found my copy on EBAY.

Thanks for the background.

Yeah, it was set up months before Randy died and Ozzy and the band were pretty much stuck in the deal. Remember that Ozzy (and Sharon) had very little money at the time outside of paying for the tour and if the tour had been cancelled after Randy’s death, it would have ruined both of them financially. At the show, they were still selling the original "Diary" tour program with Randy’s photos and info and no mention was made of Rhoad’s death during the concert even though it was common knowledge. The show was broadcast on various cable channels about 6 months after the show once in a while for about a year or two before disappearing and was released in Japan on vhs and laserdisc around 1984. I have no idea why it was never officially released in the US on vhs.

What’s the history behind the Irvine, Ca filming from ‘82? Why was that show filmed and broadcast? Was it something that was already worked out when Randy was alive, then Ozzy was still contractually obligated to go through with it after Randy’s death?
