Gibson Controls

Question:

Cheers, I’m still tron whether to buy some form of treble booster to give me more highs, or spend 2-3 times the money on a new set of pickups. I prefer active pickups anyway so I might just bite the bullet. Cheers, Jon.

You’re absolutely right about no humbucker being able to re-create the Strat bridge pickups sound – ain’t in their nature, any more than a Strat single-coil can re-create the Gibson humbucker sound.  Possible replacing the bridge pickup on the Gibson with a tapped-coil humbucker might give him the best of both worlds – just a thought. The two volume pots allow you to "blend" the pickups, giving you more control over a single volume pot.  As for the tone, IMHO a Gibson with humbuckers is not going to sound as bright as a Strat.  If a Strat sound is what you want, maybe you should consider swapping out the bridge pickup for something brighter.  Leave the two volume controls and you should have a lot of options.

Hi, Wandering if anyone could halp me with this problem. I can see how two tone pots are useful on a gibson, but are there any great advantages of having two volume pots? The reason why, I feel my les paul custom is just lacking a bit the high end, pretty much happy with the pickups and love the clean sound.  But after replying to Pt about the bass booster, I thought a treble booster may be the answer to my problems. The one I’ve found is the EMG-RPC.  Its variable pot that goes from natural and as you turn it, it boosts the highs and cuts the bass, effectively making the humbucker more and more strat like.  Problem is, its a pot and I dont fancy a guitar tech drilling more holes into my gibson LP custom and I dont want a dedicated treble boost.  So was thinking of loosing a volume pot, putting both pickups on 1 volume pot, then EMG-RPC could use the free hole. Does this sound like it would work?  One thing I’m not sure on is if I need active pickups,it says the the EMG-RPC is an active EQ circuit but not whether it requirs active pickups or not. I’ve just discovered Led Zeppelin this week (I had a poor qulity recording of some dodgey songs, put me off for ages) and its some seriously good stuff, never knew stairway to heaven had that great riffage at the end. – have to say tho, the How the west was won live album is great, live stuff tends to sound better if its a descent band. I read that Jimi Page has humbucker/single coil choosable pickups and a phase switch.  Which is why I think his guitar sometimes sounds alot lighter than a gibson should.  I’m hoping that the EMG-RPC would get me closer to these sort of sounds.  Anybody think this’ll work or is it just a load of balls? Just one more thing, would cutting the bass as well make the guitar to light, i.e. soloing wise will it not cut through or be powerfull enough for say, AC/DC style solos, i.e soloing over distortion.  Would I be better off with just a treble boost? Any help would be most appreciated!, Cheers, Jon Oh yeah, just as an extra, I also discovered Black Sabbath last week as well, and its great (+ ZZ top!).  I never realised pantera’s Planet Cavern and metallicas cover of Sabbra Cadabra were actually Sabath songs. I would certainly advice any ‘rocker’ to get into AC/DC, Sabbath and any guitarist should certainly 100% listen to some Led Zeppelin, then listen to some more! Jimi hendrix, who’s that??? dont you mean Jimi Page?! Thats the way!

NIB is a great cover, but hardly representative of Primus.  Hell, Ozzy sings it himself.  These are the songs I’d recommend for the first time listener: Tommy the Cat My Name Is Mud Antipop Harold of the Rocks To Defy The Laws of Tradition Wynonna’s Big Brown Beaver Jerry Was a Racecar Driver And I would also recommend Les’ solo version of Hot Rod Lincoln, available on some NASCAR compilation album but easily downloaded from most file sharing sites. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Heck yeah, that’s great cover!!! >Wes > He does a nice cover of the song *N I B* on the Black Sabbath tribute CD > *Nativity in Black 2* > o&o > SC > > I wanna see what this Claypool guy is all about. > > Thanks. > > — > > Steve, eh? > >          O<  "Don’t like it?  DON’T READ IT!" > >         (( > >          )) > >      <(  ) > >       Z | > >          |_

I haven’t listened to much Primus, but check out Oysterhead.  I saw the Frog Brigade several months ago.  It was great fun, but I left during the encore. Two and a half hours with the same marimba solo started to wear on me; as well as standing next to the mosh pit.  There sure were some weird folks there.

Yup.  Well… Les did. I like Anti-Pop for it’s musicality, but "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver" is what it’s all about.  There used to be a sample video of it on the primussucks web site IIRC. —   O> /()   ^^

That’s exactly why you go to Primus instead of Claypool in Oysterhead or solo.  Primus is a killer band.  Les elsewhere kind of blows.

Zakk did come out on stage with Pantera during one of those shows. I’ve seen an mpeg of it.  He didn’t jam with them though (at least in the clip), it was just him walking out on stage with his rottweiler and being introduced.

Yes, Zakk was with P&G from 93 on. >Perhaps >the Gun N Roses deal came out later? When was Black Label Society’s >first release?

BLS’ first release was 98 or 99, but GNR was around 97. When I saw BLS around the release of their 2nd album in 2000, I had the honor of hanging out with Zakk after the show. He was telling stories of this and that, and the GnR thing came up at one point. It was within a few years of that point. Zakk said ultimately he didn’t join because Axl is just an asshole who couldn’t get anything done.

Response:

>BTW the new BLS album fuckin smokes!.

Yes it does! Can’t wait until their US tour later this year/early next.

Response:

Supernaut, The first fall out between Ozzy & Zakk was in December of 93. Ozzy was working on the Ozzmosis album & was talking about getting Steve Vai. (94) Zakk did his Pride & Glory band didn’t he? Ozzy came out of retirement & did projects also with Therapy & the Muppets in 94. Perhaps the Gun N Roses deal came out later? When was Black Label Society’s first release? Joe Holmes joined Ozzy & toured with him in August of 95 but Ozzmosis came out in Oct of 95 with Zakk & then Joe keeps Touring for 3 years until the Sabbath got Bill Ward & toured from 98 to 2001 when Down to Earth came out with the return of Zakk & Ozzy’s solo band again. Perhaps after the European tour Ozzy will go back to Black Sabbath. Where the fuck is Nostradomus when you need him? Hail Satan! 666

Ozz & Zakk had a falling out prior to that, though. As they recorded Ozzmosis, I’ve read they almost never even saw each other throughout the whole process. Then later on Zakk was in talks w/Axl about joining Gn’R.

Response:

You’re correct, I read the same thing.

This all happend after ozzmosis was released.  Zak bailed on the tour, he was wanting to a solo thing before the guns gig was presented to him.  The GNR thing fell trough then Zakk started Black Label society. Ozzy begged him to play guitar on the last album after he realized Holmes was an average player. BTW the new BLS album fuckin smokes!.

Joe was definitely at OzzFest 2000, I got a signed 8×10 and a picture with him. But as far as Zakk playing w/Pantera goes, it was either a one-show thing or didn’t happen.

You missed your window of opportunity on that bad boy, since it was featured in "There’s Something About Mary." That would have been the time. So, pay attention to what oldies are showing up in popular movies, and do those. Whole careers were made on covering Motown after "The Big Chill" came out.

My straps came loose and the whole bass came crashing down on stage…luckily no damage done…but the connector (is that the right name for it ?) from the cable was snapped in half, and now the top 5mm (about 1/4" inch) of the metal tip is stuck in the jack…i’ve already tried using tweezers and opening up the back….neither to any avail…. any suggestions on what i can do right now short of taking it to a repair shop (which i’m pretty sure i’ll have to do) ? thanx, Ray
