If the only aim was to make the files smaller, he’d have used Real Audio, a Real Nasty form a compression that makes even the best songs sound like a garage band in Seattle’s grunge hey-day. > Personally, I’d rather have a shite, small-sized copy of a song than > spend three hours trying to download a cd-quality file over a poor > connection. If its a poor connection, use GetRight or something, and you’ll end up getting something infinately more enjoyable than a sub-standard quality audio file that you wouldn’t want to keep for more than one listen. > They’ve got every right to do it whatever way they like.

As far as I remember, the original poster asked if people had any problems with the files. If theres 20 shitty files, instead of 5 CD-quality files that are rotated weekly, some people might interpret this as a problem. regards, Paul

No, the whole reason of compression routines is to make large files smaller. MP3s are used for people transferring music to/from CDs because at the moment it is the best way of compressing WAVs, which are what is needed to make an audio CD (at least, with what I use). People wishing for high compression of lower quality sound files can still use mp3s if they want. It just means they sound shit when you transfer them to CDs. But, as much of what is transferred like this is copyright material, you’r breaking the law so be happy with what you’ve got. Personally, I’d rather have a shite, small-sized copy of a song than spend three hours trying to download a cd-quality file over a poor connection. Don’t force people to do things just to keep you happy. They’ve got every right to do it whatever way they like.

Actually, I downloaded the entire albums of TXF and VXI in one night. You gotta get on at the right times and you’ll get quite a high d/l speed.     Hey, it’s me again.  The only complaint I would have about the MP3’s is that if you want to make them available for people to sample, at least compress them at a better quality of sound.  The compression you have is too low and you tend to lose some of the greatness of the music.     Try compressing them at about 128kbps / 44kHz (average) and see how they sound.  Yes, the file is bigger than you may have wanted, but it is well worth it for those who may have to wait a while for the downloads. The whole point of a MP3 is for cd-quality sound.  This means it must be 128 kbps, 44 khz, 16-bit stereo, encoded in high-quality mode. Anything less isn’t worth my time, and I’d be a bit pissed to have wasted my time downloading it. If it is compressed at these settings, it comes out to a compression of approximately 10:1, which makes about 1 Meg per minute of music. The reason you need to have MP3 at this quality is because many people burn them back onto a CD and they still want the CD to sound perfect.
