LV/ROCCAFORTE CONSPIRACY, cork tester

Question:

I just finished this cork sniffer preamp tube tester for LV today. This is one of his burn-in rigs that now sniffs for cathode leakage and microphonics. Any preamp tube that makes it through this one will be DEAD quiet in anything. We’re talking cork sniffer select, and why wouldn’t you want that? http://www.tpdigital.net/ihost/roccaforte/IM000507.jpg

Are you able to explain the concepts behind how this tester actually works, or is that a closely guarded secret? That picture reminds me of something.  When I’d slide a Fender chassis back into it’s cabinet, sometimes I used to spend the longest time poking around with that long bolt, trying to get the thing to go through the hole in the chassis.  And I always figured there must be some secret to this, that I just didn’t figure out yet. So I was looking at how the chassis was built last time I had the SF Bassman out of it’s cabinet, and I was looking at that groove going up the ends of the chassis, right at those bolt holes, thinking "Wait, Fender spent extra money to put that groove in there.  I don’t get it!". So then it *finally* occurred to me after all this time that you get the bolts to go through the holes by guiding them through with those grooves.   Groovy.   That’s embarrassing.  All that time I wasted before, not knowing that. Pete

Its just a sensitive preamp. << I used to spend the longest time >poking around with that long bolt, trying to get the >thing to go >through the hole in the chassis.   >>

Heres the secret: slide the chassis in so you get the front panel bottom edge flush with the baffle, with one hand hold the back of the chassis all the way up, drop the screw straight down. Its easy as long as your screw isn’t bent, if it is lay it flat on the ground and gently tap it back with a hammer till its right. Works for me, Doug

Thanks, I’ll have to remember that.  Actually, on that Bassman head, the faceplate sits about 1/16" past the baffle.   It was real pesty getting the chassis in and out, so I removed that top trim piece on the baffle board.  That made my life a whole lot easier.  I just don’t understand why the trim was put there anyhow. I’m considering removing it all around. Pete

Response:

Trim is good if you use it right. Doug

Yeah, this’ll be a big help.  The rig that I’ve been using so far simply wasn’t sensitive enough to H-K leakage to sniff for Doug’s specs.  (Did fine for Marshalls and Fenders, though.)  You’d be surprised; Doug’s preamp circuit will hum with a tube that shows *zero* H-K leakage on a Hickok.  Yep, it’s a conspiracy – start screechin’, Elvirus.  There really ain’t no Doug Roccaforte. I’m EVERYBODY!  BOOOOOOO!  Muhahahahaha… keep lookin’ under yer bed, Elvirus.  DUST WILLIES ARE GONNA GET YA! Lord Valve Asshole

Ice pick?  Thanks, check’s in the mail.  Do you slide the chassis till the ice pick goes through the chassis hole, or were you just using the ice pick as a tone reference. Pete

Being half Sicilian I know what an ice pick is for, and it aint Fenders! Doug

It certainly is a multi-pupose tool.  That’s the more colorful side of icepicks. Pete

Slide until the pick drops all the way through.  Leave it there while you drop the screw through the other hole (on the same side).  Once it drops, pull the pick and stick it through a hole on the other end.  This aligns the chassis for all four holes, and the remaining screws will drop right through. What the Sicilian half of me was taught: You remove the metal collar, when you stick it in only the handle comes back, throw it away and you’re done. Doug

I was just over at Sears Hardware today to pick up a 2 wheel handtruck so I’ll have an easier time moving the SC200 to the other side of the house.   They have a really good one with pneumatic tires for about $30.  So I asked one of the guys if they have ice picks.  And the guy said "You mean like what you use to pick ice off your roof with?" Is there anything an icepick *can’t* do? Pete
