Jarl Sigurd: Lifestyle of a Legend

Question:

Here is a copy of a newspaper article I found on Jarl Sigurd in the Lifestyles section of the New York Times: February 18, 2001  The world of guitar players is a very vast and diverse one.  Many of the greats of our past have come and gone, some remembered and some forgotten.  Enter Jarl Sigurd …  Perhaps you’ve not heard of this rogue artist who is creating quite a stir on the eastern coast of the United States.  His history is quite short considering that he only began playing guitar three weeks ago. He has taken the art of guitar to new heights having played at the Empire State building and brought listeners to their knees (literally).  If you haven’t heard of him by now then get ready.  Jarl is all set to take the world by storm, starting here on U.S. soil.  Jarl hails from Vanuatu, a collection of islands in the south Pacific.  A member of the Federated States of Micronesia, Vanuatu consists of the islands Espiritu Santo, Malekula Pentecost, Efate and Tanna.  Born Jarl Edward Jones, he grew up a poor boy living on the streets.  His musical experiments first started at the age of 12 when he would beg for spare vatus (money) while playing off-beat rhythms on tin cans and bottles.  Most passersby would give up their money just to make him stop his horrible rackets.  However Jarl remained unfazed.  He saw his clanking cacophony as true art that no one quite understood.  This young boy, unaware of his great potential for noise, had aspirations for world domination.  However the people of Vanuatu had other ideas.  At the age of 27, while performing the "Toka," a ritual dance, Jarl was apprehended by various sonically abused citizens who complained of splitting headaches and bleeding ears as a result of his abominable musical excursions.  The massively growing mob responded by forcing him to execute a Pentecost land dive – without a rope.  This resulted in a near-death experience for Jarl but a musical rebirth while unconcious.  He had an out-of-the-body experience and was visited by Sigurdis,

Same for Lightning Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, and Jimi Hendrix.  Then sit down with a recording of Aretha Franklin doing "Chain of Fool", one of the greatest songs ever written, and learn to play that. Pete — Hey!  You’re not Frank Zappa! –Pepper Mills to Ren
