Best song of the 20th century?

Question:

Ok, with all the recent talk about songs by AC/DC, Humble Pie, Peter Framton, Joe Walsh, etc.  I have to ask, what was the greatest song of the 20th century, and not according to the idiots at VH-1. Here, I’d like to nominate these songs in no particular order: Basketball Jones All My Exes Live in Texas Rocky Mountain Way Theme song for the Jeffersons Theme song to Shaft Old Ben Lucus Big Leg Emma Powderfinger Willin (Little Feat’s 1st LP) Why does it hurt when I Pee That’s Allright Momma Black Friday (Steely Dan) Ok, that’s all I’ve got, that must about cover the 20th century’s best though.  What did I miss? I nominate Charlie Parker’s version of " A Night In Tunisia " , the DIAL version …nifty guitar hook too , right from the head . Recorded in the middle of the century ,  ’46 I think  , kinda’ reflects on the first and last half off the century , and 100% tubes !!! …. I agree, good selection, maybe too obscure, but I love Howlin Wolf’s FortyFour Blues, even though admitedly I did hear Little Feat do it first. Pete Got questions?  Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. Up to 100 minutes free! http://www.keen.com

songwriter. "Rhapsody in >Blue" is an amazing composition. But then there’s Irving Berlin, geez, lots of >great talent.

I was born somewhere in the mid ’50s, and actually don’t have anything recorded before Elvis’ first LP (‘53?) so I don’t even have much opinion about the first part of the century. I don’t really intend for that original list of songs I had to be taken very seriouslly.  I forgot to add a Bob Dylan song, like maybe "Like a Rolling Stone". >Somebody will pick a Black Sabbath tune, I’m sure.   :)

I don’t really know if you could say they wrote good songs, but on the first LP they had a really good sound and it was a fun LP to listen to, but they weren’t really good songs, only an opinion, don’t anyone get upset, this thread is long enough. You’re right, Apostrophe _and_ Overnight Sensation both had some great songs, like the whole 1st side of Apostrophe, Uncle Remus. And then about everything on Overnight Sensation is just terific song craftsmanship, the only thing that kept most of it from getting bigtime radioplay was it’s subject matter.  I’m looking at the list of songs on that album, and they all belong on the list. I’d also probably have to list "The torture never stops". Pete Got questions?  Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. Up to 100 minutes free! http://www.keen.com
