Junk in our ice

Question:

Our ice making machine, in our refrigerator, has white floating items that appear in our water glass after the ice melts. I drew water from both hot water, and cold water line, and after a few hours of standing, the water is clear.  But when ice melts in  glass, these small white items appear. How can I clean out the water line of an ice maker?  We have cleaned the tray and all components as best we can.  But these items still appear after the ice melts. dave

Response:

Might be pieces of the enamel coating on the ice mold. If that’s the case, time for a new icemaker. You could replace the water line going from the solenoid valve to the fill tube. It’s 1/4" plastic tubing.

Dont know what kind of ice maker/refrigerator,freezeer yuou have, but we had a Kenmore(sears) ref. frezeer with the ice maker and it started to have black metal chips in the ice…found out the trough of the ice maker the metal was breaking down and when water would fill up in the ice maker it would be touching the metal trough and then freezing and when the arm came over the push the ice out it would also take off some metal as there was ice to metal contact(cheap soft metal, the plastic painted covering was deteriating).  our solution was to get a new trough and there was no more problem.

This is Turtle Do you have a carbon type water filter on the water line going to the refrigerator. If not you need one then see is problem still there. TURTLE

i will bet you have a water softener. if you do that is the salt left in the water. when water is frozen the salt comes together. it is not enough to hurt you. i had the same problem and called my water softener company. if you don’t have a softener i can’t answer as to what the white stuff is. good luck

I thought most ice makers recommended using a filter in the water line to the ice maker.  About $15 for the snap in replaceable ones. No sediment/taste/odor (mechanical) type filter can remove things that are dissolved in the water. Such as sodium, chloride, sulfate, hardness minerals etc.. Those things that cause ice problems. This will be the case if the ice is really old. Even ice made in trays will do this, so there may be nothing wrong with your machine. Another thing with old ice is that it collects a smell from food in the fridge. Throw out all your ice, clean out the bin with some baking soda and make a fresh lot of ice, check this batch out as soon as available. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I drew water from both hot water, and cold water line, and after a few hours > of standing, the water is clear.  But when ice melts in  glass, these small > white items appear. > How can I clean out the water line of an ice maker?  We have cleaned the > tray and all components as best we can.  But these items still appear after > the ice melts. > dave

We have the same problem with ice made in trays. More prevalent in older ice. Wish I could tell you what I thought it was, but I don’t think it’s your ice maker. I just assumed it was harmless since I’m still alive. Blake
