Jazz Bass Info Sought

Question:

A dude hit my truck and didn’t have insurance or the ability to pay. Instead I got his Fender Jazz Bass with brand new case. The damage was about $430 and it seems like the bass is worth more than that. I don’t know what the year is, but its got active electronics, a positively bitchin’ blue finish with no dings and no corrosion on the hardware at all – it’s a beautiful instrument and really plays well. It sounds wonderful through my SVT/Carvin stack. I suspect it’s a late model. Any comments on this bass? I’ve never owned an axe with active electronics. What’s the advantage/disadvantage there? Any info on this axe would be appreciated. How can I find out exactly when it was built. It says "Made in America" on the plate. M.K. — My favorite things: Kali * Puppies * Slayer * Ruth Gordon * Edgard Varese

go over to www.fender.com. If you’ve got a serial # then go to the ‘Ax Dater’ & plug it in. It should tell you about the year. If it’s an old one & you’ve got active electronics then it’s might be worth more than $430. Expecially if they did a good job. Man, you’ve got a totally unique situation. MUSICians that hit MUSICians that pay by MUSICal instruments. What a concept!! Maybe there’s a desert island that was lost in time. The inhabitants only speak MUSIC. They sleep in beds that have real sheet MUSIC for bed sheets. They have a whole huts maufactured by ANVIL. They go to work to generate MUSIC. They kids get born with the appropriate MUSICal instrument that they’ll play in life….. What city was that you got hit in. I’d like to put that on my vacation list.

It’s almost certainly a ’90s model jazz.  There have been two different active model Jazz basse made during this time.  Most likely its the first one, with two Lace Senor pickups and stacked black metal control knobs.  I’m not too certain on US second and prices but I’d say there little risk you got more than $430 worth!!!! >How can I find out exactly when it was built.

There should be a serial number on the front of the headstock below the Fender logo.  It will probably start with N (or just possibly an E).  N is ’90s, E is ‘80. The second characater should be a digit and will indicate (approximately) the year of manufacture, i.e N3 is ‘93, E9 is ‘89. Cheers, Bill Sydney, Australia
