Question:
I need help with my new amp. I just got a Mesa Single Recto solo head, and a 2×12 closed back Recto Cab with it. Right of the bat with my Les Paul I could not really nail the type of distortion I was looking for, even on the Lead/Modern channel. So I put a new Duncan Distortion in the bridge and did notice a considerable difference in sound. I since added an old Boss 7band EQ in the FX loop and it helped also. Bear in mind though this is my first tube amp, and have always played it at real low volumes like 2. I’m trying to get a real tight distortion(compariable to say Godsmack, I hate using bands for comparision). Basically what i’m asking is: 1. Would cranking this amp either with the actual volumes or adding a Hotplate make this amp sound better?. Am I striving for a sound that can be reached unless cranked or antenuated? 2. How similar is the voicing of this amp compared to a Dual Rectifier?, can I achieve those tones from the 50w single package? 3. Does anyone out there that currently has a Single Rectifier have any tips for me? 4. And finally, did I make the right amp choice, Cause I do like how it sounds, I just cant nail that real tight crunch, mabye I’m too picky. Thanks, O’neill…

Yeah, fuck that EQ pedal, waste of money, and effects loops are a loopy idea. You gotta crank that mother to get a good sound. An attenuator is a great idea! One huge problem is that you bought an amp that wants to be CRANKED, and if you don’t use the thing above 2, you might have never heard this puppy working yet. >2. Did you bring your guitar to the place you bought the amp? If so, and you were playing thru it, did it sound okay there?

Not even close… that’s your whole problem. If you want that new kiddie rock type of sound that’s so popular these days, you have to have a Dual Rectifier. Make sure you get Boss Heavy Metal pedal to put in front of it also.

Mesas take time… and experimentation.. 1st.. Vintage 30s need at least 20 -30 hours of play time to settle in! Yep.. breaking ‘m in takes a while. 2nd.. No one but you can decide if you made the right choice.. personal experience.. Had a Tremoverb and loved it! Then started reading and listening to others and embarked on a very long 2 year journey buying and selling gear… only to wind up ordering a new one.. go figure 3rd.. This stuff.. getting your sound requires talking to others… Peace, Dan

I have to agree with PMG on this. I use a Hot Plate with a VHT Pittbull (another amp that "wants to be cranked") and it’s the only way that I’ve been able to really make the amp sing. The amp sounds great without it, however, to really get to that power tube OD you have to turn the volume up past half way. Get a Hot Plate. Max

He’s what I’d call an inferior Alice Cooper wanna-be. But I doubt that he’s on smack, he’s doing too good a job of selling his shit to be on smack. The way I look at Alice Cooper, once he did songs like "Mr And Misdemeanor" and "Refrigerator Heaven" way early in his career, that pretty much ended all competition to his demented crown, and then you follow his career into his more popular albums, and you got things like "Ballad of Dwight Fry", "Under My Wheel’s, "Be My Lover"!!!!(need html here) "She struts into the room, well I don’t know her, with a magnifying glance, I just sort of looked her over…" Marilyn who? > But I doubt that > he’s on smack, he’s doing too good a job of selling his shit to be on > smack. >Some people cope better than others. >-Miles
Well, hey, I was just talking to my neighbor tonight, and the son of the woman who babysits for her children when she at work, the kid OD’d and died last week, heroin. Fuckin A! Pissed me off. I didn’t know the kid that killed himself like that, but it’s gonna have an effect on people I love. That fuckin idiot. Wish I coulda stopped that from happening. Yeah, but that album also included "Halo of Flies", which was awesome. >Some people cope better than others. >-Miles > Well, hey, I was just talking to my neighbor tonight, and the son of the > woman who babysits for her children when she at work, the kid OD’d and > died last week, heroin. I was just making an obsrevation (thinking about Lou Reed vs people I knew long ago), certainly not condoning it. Even most hippies knew that the big H was bad news. Janis, we hardly got to know you… -Miles

In general Cooper up to Billion Dollar Babies is my all time favorite guitar group. Nothing flashy, just solid GOOD guitar sounds. Simple leads, nice tone, and GOOD rhythms. Saw Alice and da boys quite a bit in the early 70s.

Alice had the best snear to his voice that I ever heard. I pretty much like all his stuff that he did with his original band. After that band was gone, something just wasn’t working, for me that is. Pete — I have eaten my own head rather than listen to that horrible music –Pvt. Phineas Halberstam
